I work at a girls’ home... let me tell you, “home” is ingrained in the soul from early infancy. They come from abusive, drug-addict, criminal offender parents, yet they prefer that home over the safe, warm environment we provide from them. A human being can barely cope with the notion that their birth family is damaging to them. But I agree, it’s not “love” Michael has for his mom.

I don’t think it’s that. It’s not that she’s proud of him of being her caregiver. She’s proud because Michael is that kind of person. This is a moment in the movie when Mama Leigh Anne showed her honor. Notice Michael's mother calls her son "Big Mike", but even though Michael is not there with them, Leigh Anne still calls him "Michael" because he told her he didn't like to be called Big Mike. I think, in this moment, Leigh Anne proved that she had both courage and honor in equal measure. She had courage because she chose to overcome her fears, and return to that rough, scary neighborhood, without Michael, to meet with Michael’s mother, and learn Michael’s history. In this moment, she was protecting Michael’s blindside. Leigh Anne has honor, because although the officer told Leigh Anne that because Michael was a ward of the state, she did not need his mother’s consent to become Michael’s guardian…just a judge’s order…this was not enough for Leigh Anne. She wanted to meet with Michael's mother, herself, and show her respect, from one mother to another, by letting her know that her son was safe, and that someone genuinely cared about him. Leigh Anne told her that "No matter what, you are still his mother, and I am not trying to take away anything from that."

She had a child who loved her no matter what. It's almost like she was mad that he did because it reminds her of how messed up she is and that he still loved someone that didn't deserve to be loved . Addicts love the people in their lives, but they love what they're addicted to more. They need help, and therapy to figure out how to let go of the substance they're addicted to, and find comfort, fulfillment, and real Love in their family. The problem is that addicts don't feel heard, loved, or understood in their lives so they turn to drinks or drugs to find it. It's incredibly selfish, and it isn't right, but it's understandable to turn to what you know will make you feel better when you don't feel cared for at home. The worst part is in these cases, and it's a Mom turning her back on her children in favor of the addiction.

All crackhead mother portrayed in movies is considered. Big Mike's Mom wasn't all that bad. I've seen a lot worse, have you seen precious?

I don’t like the mother at all. Mother’s like this see no error in their ways that is caused by their own doings. It’s always someone else’s fault. My mom did this, my dad wasn’t there, etc. it’s unfair to the children, but the children continually forgive. If she needed help, she should have got it before bringing Michael into that situation.
