How fun! I'm glad our chickens are back to work, store bought eggs are just flavorless!
@ChefJimmyJ
@ChefJimmyJ 7 жыл бұрын
The flavor difference is much more distinct eating over-easy or soft-boiled eggs. Diet plays a huge roll. There was a local lady that raised chickens for eggs but kept them in a run and fed commercial crumbles. The flavor and color of the yolks was no different than store bought. Birds have to free range. The flavor comes from the bugs, grass and greens they eat...JJ

I've noticed that the shells of the eggs from a friend's farm won't crack when I apply the same force that I do with store bought eggs, and inspection show the shells to be thicker. May explain why that egg did not break when he plopped it into the bucket.

I just saw this video. My Grandmother raised chickens ALL her life. Even when she was very ill at the end of her life we maintained her laying hens for her, so she could say she Never EVER ate a store bought egg. She said any yolk that didn't look like the Sun meant the hen wasn't being cared for properly, and refused to eat it! But mostly she believed there was no flavor to store bought eggs, so I'm guessing she tasted one at some point. :)

Using the same Chickshaw, we have 29 layers and 2 roosters. Now that egg production is up, we have 2 milk crates in the front for extra boxes. At 5 pm, I turn them on their side, this keeps the hay clean. Chickens are happier because they don't have to wait as long for their turn to lay...Love you guys!

Great Video! Poor Bri, but sometimes our taste buds fool us. Food companies spend millions to fool us. I don't have great smell but I have great taste and therefore a great homestead cook. ( I work with a gal at the Hospital who has a noise like a blood hound. It causes her issues when folks wear perfume and it gives her migraine headaches). No worries... all is good. I bought a bunch of chicks last August and they are laying now. Have the baby eggs. Love getting a few double yolkers. Those are really fun. Only seem to get them when the chickens are young first laying gals. Those weird no shell eggs appear too. My LGD pups love those. Take care!

@@SuperKenndog We make sure they have plenty of oyster shell. It is calcium that they need for making hard shells. If they have been out for a while because the store was out, their shells become very thin and easily broken.

No, duck eggs are white :D sometimes a bit green. The dark one is probably a Marans egg, or just a chicken who decided on a dark egg. We have one chicken who will change the shades of brown, from super dark to light and speckled. The ducks lay greenish white.

Ive found that you can really taste the difference when the yolks are soft/runny That being said some store bought eggs are quite close. I have been surprised at Costco eggs here in CA. I have found some to be fertile even (not labeled as such). And very close to my own backyard eggs. With CA law all but eliminating caged chickens I find that the egg quality has come up. That is not to say that don't think my backyard eggs are better, I still prefer them, just that some retail eggs are pretty darn close.

Yea, Arthur. Depth of flavor is what we think makes the difference. They are also creamier, we think. But, of course, there's no contest when it comes to the visual part. Farm-fresh eggs are always brighter. Here's an experiment for you guys to try: feed the chickens a significant amount of carrot peels, cooked beets, or red peppers (some gourmet chefs actually do this). You are going to be surprise!

wow. I really am missing out. Problem with keeping chickens here in the uk on a small scale isnt particularly economically viable. Unless we feed them food scraps which is illegal under UK law. So if you wanna grow chickens you would need to solely feed food produced from a certified chicken feed grower. To top it all off is that i live in the suburbs of london so getting farm fresh eggs are either really expensive (there is a local farm nearby with organic chicken eggs for sale) or super far away and petrol would make the cost just as much as buying them at the nearby farm.

Our results did not show a difference. Same as random, about 50/50 when blindfolded and 100% without blind folds for the farm fresh. Maybe we had a good batch of store bought.
