Blindly following the US’ huge tariffs on Chinese EV cars will hurt the interests of Canada. The real choice for Canada is not between China and the US, but whether the US or China is doing the right thing.

Tariffs against Chinese EV makers aren't going to help US automakers compete in the world market, quite the opposite. They should have done with China what China did with Apple and Tesla: allow one or two Chinese EV makers into the US market to stimulate American carmakers to compete while still keeping the market shielded for a period of time. All the details can be negotiated from that point, but that would require America to act like mature adults instead of being little babies.

I totally agree with what you have said, but ... Canada is highly dependent on the US, and consequently, whatever the US decides to do, we follow. Resistence is futile as it would only incite retailation. I am a retired guy that was born and raised in Canada and I had the pleasure of spending a few months in China last year. I am an Engineer with an automotive background and I saw some excellent Chinese EVs that I would be proud to own. In the late 70s, during the oil crisis, Japanese small cars became very popular because of their quality, fuel efficiency, and price. This allowed many people to purchase them, retain their larger vehicles, and use the Japanese economy car as a second vehicle to save money and to minimize overall gasoline usage. Time has proven that the major US automakers have very little interest in producing economy cars as the profit margins are way too low, or non existant. This segment of the automotive market could easily be filled with Chinese made vehicles and have negligable impact on the major North American manufacturers. Introducing Chinese made EVs would serve as a catalyst to foster charging infrastructure upgrades and deployment, as well as service and sales facilities. This would also be a great boost toward EV adoption and meeting Canadian environmental goals. I have seen no evidence of a Canadian EV implementation plan, so without the introduction of Chinese EVs into the Canadian market in the very near future, I am confident that it will be virtually impossible for Canada to meet their EV related climate initiatives. Following the lead of the US will harm the average Canadian.

Overcapacity and the dumping of electric vehicles in other countries while subsidizing the production costs domestically are the issue. The reason for tariffs being at such high rates is to combat the drastic and anticompetitive lowering of the EV prices by China.

When the US buyer imports goods subject to tariffs from China, they pay the tariff to the US government. This cost and any markup are typically passed on to the end consumer, meaning consumers ultimately bear the burden of tariffs through higher prices. The Chinese seller, however, does not directly pay the tariff; the importer in the US bears that responsibility. China does not suffer the consequences of tariffs. The US consumers are being punished by having to pay higher prices. In 2012, President Obama, as part of his plan to double the U.S. share of the world's solar panels from 5% to 10%, imposed tariffs of up to 249% on solar imports from China. In response, China retaliated by imposing import restrictions on polysilicon from the U.S. At the time, the U.S. held a 50% share of the global polysilicon market, which has since dropped to under 4%. The U.S. share of the world's solar panels has dropped to under 2%. China has promised to retaliate as strongly in response to new tariffs.

I think Canada will be fine... If they would prefer to drive American/European EVs as part of de-risking, then that is what they will do. Who wants to source spare parts for cars from a country that will be engaged in a trade war with America possibly for decades. Just replacing Chinese EV batteries alone would put a nation deeply in Chinas mercy at the moment. I argue de-risk and diversify by building an alternate supply chain, which is what they are doing but it will take years to compete with Chinas monopoly.
