a detail i love is when Jake says they’re language might aswell be english now that he’s learned it, and it goes from the kids speaking navi to speaking english. they’re actually speaking navi, but it transitions to english so the audience can understand like jake now does.

Wow has that been confirmed? I love the franchise and the na'vi language so much, and I was quite confused on why everyone would speak english. I started thinking maybe they learnt it in order to understand the humans during war times and was really sad I didn't get to hear more of the language amongst the characters

@@annie.phoenix Yup, when there's all Na'vi, they are speaking Na'vi but for us got translated to english. However when they are with humans/Avatars (except Spider, he talks full Na'vi too), we hear them speak Na'vi, case in point when they get captured, Lo'ak and Kiri talk in Na'vi with Quaritch.

Y'know, at first when I saw that final shot of Jake opening his eyes yet again, I rolled my eyes. But I think I get it now. The 'fortress' is not the Metkayina home per se, but all of Pandora. Jake's not just going to try and mitigate, he's actually going to fight for the planet again. Not sure if he knows about the terraforming plans yet, but the fighting spirit is back - the best defense is a good offense? We'll see in two years!

I'm glad you guys didn't write off or hate on Spider like so many people who've seen/reacted to this film. Honestly, Spider in my opinion is the most compelling character in terms of potential emotional/dramatic character arcs. The relationships he has with the Sully kids (that see him as a friend/brother) vs Jake & Neytiri (that see him as a "stray cat") vs Jake (adoptive father) & Quaritch (bio father) all have really interesting potential for conflict and character growth.

@@alyssabullock6421 I know! It's mind boggling to me. He's such a selfless and kind kid who's been treated so poorly in this film. Genuinely I think the Spider haters have approximately 0 emotional intelligence to be able to ignore that he was treated like a "stray cat" by the closest thing he has to a father figure, tortured by the RDA, and then spent an extended amount of time with Quaritch who actually gave him some semblance of attention and importance (albeit a serious case of Stockholm Syndrome). Some of them even go so far as to retroactively blame him for Neteyam's death because he saved Quaritch. They don't understand that he's never had a father figure that tried to protect him in his life. Anyway, when all's said and done I don't think Jake has earned the right to call Spider his "son" considering he only seemed to give a damn about him when his firstborn son died in part to protect him.

You guys probably didn't catch this, but the girl who played the wife of the Water tribe was Kate Winslet, so it was ironic when you made the Titanic connection with the boat sinking considering this is her second collaboration with James Cameron. So much of this film feels like a greatest hits of James Cameron's films. The action at the end definitely gave me True Lies and Aliens vibes, including the new mech suits the humans have and the little sister falling down the drain ala Newt in Aliens, the mobile, one-man subs reminded me a lot of The Abyss, Quartich crushing the skull in his hand gave me serious Terminator skull crushing vibes, the ship sinking definitely recalls Titanic, & the flooding was very Titanic and The Abyss, kinda weird how so much of this film is sort of a compilation of his whole career.

After the first movie, I wanted to see more of Jake and Neytiri. After the second, now, I want to see more of Spider, Lo‘ak and Kiri. They‘re left off with huge inner conflicts: Kiri always felt alienated and different, because of her intense connection to Eywa. Spider joined a family he never really was considered part of, after saving their mortal enemy. He‘s formed a bond with Quaritch, but chose to live with the Sully‘s and with the fact that Neytiri would’ve happily off‘d him to save Kiri. And finally, Lo‘ak. He saw his brother die, his dad literally told him it was his fault and he believes so himself. Then, there is his Spirit Brother Payakan, who probably will be disliked even more, because he had chosen to kill again. Of course I‘m excited to see more of the others as well, but I‘m most thrilled by those three. I believe, because of their inner conflicts, that they will grow more and more distant with the Sully‘s. After losing Neteyam, Lo‘ak will get even more protective over Kiri and she herself is very protective over Spider. I think that the trio will grow closer and eventually help each other with their struggles. And they probably one day will be joined by Tsireya, who has formed a deep bond with Lo‘ak and because of her good soul, she will not let him grieve alone and will stay close to him, because she cares for him.

My theory for what will happen in the next movie is Jake is definitely going to have to rally up all of the Na'vi tribes he can find, and he probably will be traveling from biome to biome trying to convince tribe leaders to join their battle. Maybe one of the tribe leaders will feel threatened and disagree and will be kind of a secondary antagonist. We’ll probably see his son step up more as a main character. And I think that marine biologist guy will probably still be alive and will be hanging out with the scientists. We’ll probably get some stuff with Spider and the Colonel too.

I really don’t understand the hate this movie received. I’m fine with people not liking it. But their reason are very contradicting. 1) They would say it has a simple plot. But mind I ask, WHEN HAS THIS EVER BEEN A PROBLEM? One of the most profitable movies last year were top gun maverick. Receiving praises all around, never heard a complaint about the movie being too simple (which it is). And don’t get me stated with marvel and Star Wars content. Like it feels like there’s a hidden agenda with people and this movie. Because even before it released they’re were people non-stop hating on a film that has yet to be released.

I think because the hype and the visuals the Avatar movies have this expectation of some revolutionary story but that isn't the point and never has been. It's about the simplicity and beauty in culture and in nature. The fellowship of community and family. It's long because learning and adopting into a new culture cannot and should not be done quickly. There is so much symbolism in the training scenes and how it can correlate to our society that I could write a whole novel. All in all this movie is much better when you rewatch with the first one fresh in your mind and you focus less on what is going to happen in the main story and more on what is going on in the moment and what that means.

Something that I’ve been thinking about is Kiri’s seizure could be because she was essentially plugged into god and there is only so much that your brain can take of that before it takes its toll, and the reason she sees her mother is for lake of better phrasing, eywa is using Grace as an avatar to communicate through the “memories” and it could be in part actually Grace because she was “with eywa” when she died in the first movie so it could have actually been her talking and not eywa but I like to think it ended with eywa talking to her through grace.

I love you guys, but kinda upset you didnt like the main bad guy coming back for this movie. I loved the concept of him coming back to finish what he couldn't, but it's kinda a different character. I think in the sequels, this version we meet will turn good, but another avatar with his conscience will come back with even more hate for what his past self became. I think the rivalry between jake and Q could be as legendary as ash and team rocket.

With all due respect, I feel like people who are overly harsh on their criticism of the avatar movies seem to be showing some kind of cognitive dissonance. Based on the reaction of these guys, they clearly throughly enjoyed the movie and were invested in what was happening, shed tears at Netayam's death, were well into the action and were rooting for the main characters all the way, but then once it was over they seemed to be hesitant to be overly positive, almost like they're obligated to be critical of it. They all liked it clearly and say as much at the end, but it seems less enthusiastic then their reactions would indicate. Other reactors had very similar reactions to these and had no hesitation gushing over the movie afterwards, and then there were those who were clearly not that invested and said as much afterwards, both pretty honest. But then there are those who seem to really like it but nevertheless seem almost ashamed of saying anything overly positive about it. I feel like people get jaded over movies so easily these days, thinking a simple, predictable story and characters just always equals "bad" for some reason and just has to be crapped on for that reason alone, even though most of these people would be perfectly fine with this in many other movies that they enjoy. The criticism makes no sense, it completely dismisses any of the other factors that contribute to ones enjoyment of a movie; the performances, the dialogue, the interplay between characters, the ideas and concepts, the production quality and design (especially for a fantasy or sci fi movie), the editing and pacing, cinematography, soundtrack etc. Regardless of how familiar a story is, that doesn't actually impact any of these things, the movie as a whole can still be "good" despite how familiar the story it is. But instead the hypercritical and cynical film critic culture online these days has just killed any leaway on films that work beyond whats on the written page; most of the things I mentioned in that list is derived from the script anyway so there's that... I guarantee most of the people who engage in this kind of thinking have never been near a film set or a writing class, and seem to talk so confidently about these things despite what actual filmmakers and writers have to say; look up opinions from people in the industry on the avatar movies and they're mostly very positive, there are even writing classes online that use the first movie as a positive example of effective screenwriting, think about that... I feel like the avatar movies have shown up the disconnect that exists in movie tastes between the internet film fan community and the rest of the world. Both movies are phenomenal worldwide successes, gain overly positive word of mouth and repeat viewings (way of water is still in theatres!), celebrated at awards season and gain mostly positive critic reviews; even the re-release of the first movie September last year, which came with little fan fare, did great and was loved by those who watched it for the first time. And yet, you go to the online community and no one seems to care; not a lot of meme content or parodies or sketches etc. What's weirder is that people take this as a gauge of how successful something is, even though the people who make this content are a tiny percentage of the world's population, and a tiny percentage of the movie going audience, so why should they be an indicator for how well a movie does? Why not just ride along with what the movie has in store and be honest with how you felt, regardless of what a few other people say; I'd say they're less inclined to understand how successful movies work than the ones putting the time and effort making those movies, so perhaps give the filmmakers the benefit of the doubt when they catch your attention!

So, no, most of the water you're seeing on screen isn't fake, it's real. One of the reasons it took Cameron a decade to make this film is, in addition to wanting to have a full-complete outline for what all 4 sequels will be (unlike the Star Wars sequel trilogy), Cameron wanted to use real underwater performance capture, but unfortunately that technology wasn't available & took years to develop. So he spent years trying to develop new camera technology that would allow him to do performance capture underwater that wasn't affected by the lense refractions that has prevented performance capture to be done underwater previously. This also meant all the actors had to be trained to hold their breaths for extended periods so that Cameron could get long shots without having to cut constantly. So yes, most of these shots are the actors actually underwater, that's why it looks so real.

I had every intension of seeing this one in theaters multiple times. The tul'kun hunting scene messed me up. I could not make myself sit through that again in that large of a scale. I barely held it together after Neteyam. I knew the moment he showed back up on the boat he was going to die but it didn't make the hurt any less, especially with Zoe's performance. You can tell she tapped into something built into mothers for that anger, grief, and sadness.

I watched it last week and I really liked it! They filmed Avatar 3 at the same time and it will release december next year. This happens 16 years after the first movie, so Spider and Neteyam are both 16 years old. Some fact that will blow your mind: Apparently the whole movie was shot at 24 fps but the action scenes at 48 fps so the 24 fps scenes were duplicated. The fact that they had to come up with new motion capture for filming scenes underwater is mindblowing to me. The VFX for Avatar 2 needed 3.3 billion thread power.

You know, I definitely understand what Eric is saying about the CGI character barrier. I felt the same way watching it in theaters. Even though the Navi are so well done now and realistic, there's still something in my head that prevents me from treating them the same as real human actors. It's almost uncanny valley but not quite that - hard to describe. And traditional animation skips uncanny valley, so I don't have this issue there. I'm quite emotional normally and really wanted to feel for the son's death and the family's reaction to it, but I just didn't really feel that emotional connection. Still, it was very beautiful, and I'm glad Cameron took so long to work on the sequels because it shows. Unbelievable how beautiful the ocean was.

I remember when this came out people gave crap to Spider for being a traitor and suddenly switching sides all the time. He never switched sides. He accompanied them because he kind of had to or just continued to be locked up where he couldn't do anything. Sure Spider was a little conflicted because but way too much hatred. Same thing with the hatred on Jack. I could see him being a loving father until the war and his military training kicking in and treating them more like soldiers, disassociating a bit due to the stress and change in mindset, and being stricter with his sons.

Having adored the first film, I was looking forward to its sequel for years, like other fans have. I even went to an IMAX 3D showing, w/ my parents, for the rerelease of the first film this past September to refresh my memory, before seeing the sequel. When Way of Water released in theaters, I was there the Thursday it opened back in December, loved it from beginning to end. Even though it was a standard screening. A week later, I spent over $160 for an IMAX 3D showing. Took my parents, my sister, her husband n their 2 daughters along w/ me to experience the film. I enjoyed it even more, the 2nd viewing. JC’s plan is 5 films in total I believe. The 3rd film is already shot, n is being edited down to whatever runtime JC is comfortable w/. So the wait won’t b as long this time. 🤣👏

so, in the first one grace was dying so they took both her and her avatar to the tree thing and connected both trying to move her soul from her dying human body into the healthy avatar body. it was what they did with Jake, but he wasn't dying. you can look at kiri one of two ways i think: 1. she is the daughter of both Grace and eywa (mother nature). 2. it's grace, reborn. eywa couldn't complete the transfer of souls, but she could transfer Grace's soul into the avatar as a pregnancy

I believe that when Sigourney Weavers character died while trying to transfer her mind to her avatar, her consciousness went first into Aiwa during the transfer and that's where she ended up staying, so she's truly a part of the planet now. Her avatar was either impregnated in that same moment with part of her or she really did get pregnant before that happened, maybe with the nerdy guy, who knows...either way, the baby in that moment was imbued with a deeper connection to Aiwa and Pandora through Sigourney's character. She's not a Jesus character in my opinion...she's more like the event created almost like an elemental in a sense. Someone with the powers of nature...a natural wizard almost.
