I think one of the most overlooked jokes of the series is in this episode. The Dean announces that they're giving everyone drug-free baseballs and says "So whenever you think about drugs, think about baseball instead." Around the time of this episode, a bunch of baseball players were being busted for steroid use. Genius writing.

I just realized how great the writing is in this episode. How the Pierce and Annie story directly correlates to the story in the school play, is simple brilliance. And the moral of both of those stories is the realization of what bad influences are.

Chang's creepy interchange with Shirley after the play was part of a subplot that wasn't followed through in the season. The idea was that, as already established, Chang had consumed his twin in utero, but now that other personality was coming through and taking him over, so sometimes Chang wasn't really Chang at all. His Gollum/Smeagol impression in an earlier episode was also part of this storyline. It's a shame it wasn't continued.

I never realized it was all connected like that. That's hilarious. Maybe there's some subtextual explanation for it that can be used as a conclusion for it all. I remember in the S3 finale he mentions he's a winner because he ate his twin. So maybe his craziness in S2-3 is a power struggle and then Chang comes out on top? Still funny though, damn I wish they went through with it all the way

Community is one of the most rewatchable shows. Every time I watch an episode it seems like I catch a joke I missed because my laughter drowned it out. Or I notice something in the background. In no particular order there's Community, Archer, Rick and Morty, The Office and the first 3 seasons of Arrested Development. I also throw M*A*S*H in there but that's mostly because I grew up watching reruns and it was the first show I ever watched more than once through.

Community follows the same date as they released. season 1 was 2009-2010, season 2 is 2010-2011, season 3 2011-2012, etc. it's why you get Christmas celebrated on December 10th and such. i think the dates fell apart midway through season 3 as NBC removed them from the mid-season schedule. there weren't many defined dates afterwards

I'm gonna be honest. I've watched the whole series start to finish maybe 10 times and I never caught that line because I was always laughing too hard at the kid saying "I love you drugs" to hear it. Community is really a never ending joy because I'm still hearing and seeing gags for the first time a decade plus later.

Not the best episode but I do love it for delving a little into Annie's past. I think it sheds a lot of light on who she is and why she does what she does, and that her "bad" deeds are maybe the results of fears and not malice. Plus, it's adorable how proud she is of that trash apartment lmao

Why does Calvin, as the one who's seen this show before, keep saying it takes place in the mid 2000's? It's the early 2010's, probably 6-ish years after he's implying. That makes a significant difference for a number of reasons.

Because most people don't just have very, very narrow time periods (within like five years or so) ready for perfect recall? Everyone is using noughties' phones, the overwhelming majority of references is obviously from way before the 2010s or deliberately ambiguous enough to warrant that guess, we're getting Batman Begins and Dark Knight references being played for current... why would anyone assume it isn't the mid 2000s when just about everything you could think of hints at it being the case? Most of all, no, it doesn't really make a difference, not even close, never mind how there are a couple of incongruities that render the debate moot to begin with. I don't think anybody watching this really cares about whether anyone is a couple of years off of the (already vague) estimate, that's about the least interesting question to ask as far as I am concerned.

Unfortunately, the only place where that episode is available, on Amazon Prime, the show will be leaving in a week. They will definitely have reacted to the episode already, so that's not an issue. But I'm pretty sure it will literally drop for the Four-Sight tier on the day it leaves Prime, so it will only be available for full length for a short time, if at all.
