As Ben said, the rules changed and no one informed him. I think Ben was still working under the impression that they only wanted Ben and if he pretended not to care about Alex, they'd push her aside and let her live. I do like Ben. He's a fun character and the heartbreak in that scene when he's just staring out the window... what an actor!

Sawyer got shot in the Season One finale.

The director kinda dropped the ball on a few scenes here. I mean I guess there could be a magical reason for Sawyer not getting hit, but it still looked bad and could've been done better. Also, why the hell didn't they just absolutely destroy Keamy after he shot Alex? He was literally standing out in the open, had no leverage left and they should've had guns pointed at him that whole time.

Judging from Ben's reaction, I would say there had been rules. And I don't recall Widmore stating otherwise when Ben confronted him in London.

Sawyer did briefly feel guilt in earlier seasons for the innocent people he killed. Other than that, he/Charlie sees other murders as justified. Ben... I feel like that is self-explanatory lol. Kate and Locke are def such complex characters and i think she justified her murders as well. Sayid and Eko definitely feel guilty and had to live with what they were given. I think subtle guilt is really prevalent. But Michael's murders were completely innocent people that had no idea what they were in the middle of, plus seeing Walt every day reminds him of what he did. I love the ways the show deals with death... its very real!

@@lizthom9434 You're condeming Michael's murders and at the same time, justifying the murders of the other characters? One of Michael's victims was a murderer herself. A "bad person". Does that mean Michael was justified in killing her? Sawyer had never felt any guilt for killing Tom Friendly. In fact, he killed Tom, knowing damn well that Ben had ordered the kidnapping. Which is odd, considering that Sawyer never went after Ben for the kidnapping. Yet, back in Season 2, Sawyer had made it clear that he wanted to kill Tom because the latter had shot him on the raft. But, Tom never shot him. It was one of the Others who shot Sawyer after he had reached for his gun. However, Sawyer has never admitted this. So, if characters like Sawyer, Charlie, Kate, Sayid, Ben, Ana-Lucia, Locke and Eko saw their murders as "justified" and felt little or no remorse for what they did, then I can only say that I found their views fucked up and disturbing. I can also say the same about characters who had resorted to attempted murder like Jack and Shannon. This attitude is typical of people who resort to violence to solve their problems or resort to revenge killing to deal with the pain they had suffered. I see nothing excusable about this. In Kate's case, it wasn't even about getting revenge or saving someone. It was about erasing her father so she could pretend that her discovery that he was her father was a mistake. Michael should be condemned for his murders. But guess what? So should Sawyer, Kate, Sayid, Ben, Locke, Ana-Lucia, Eko, Charlie, Juliet and other characters who had committed murder for reasons other than self-defense or the defense of others. And characters like Jack and Shannon should be condemned for attempted murder. I'm tired of "LOST" fans making excuses for most of the major characters and at the same time condemning only Michael and Ben. This hypocrisy has been one of the uglier aspects of "LOST" fans for years.

@@DRush76 I don't want to make assumptions. But race and gender could heavily play a role in this. It's in our nature to condemn any man who commits violence against a woman. Never mind murder against 2 women. Also there's this whole stereotype about black men and murder. So that murder could have triggered something. Again. This may not be the case. But seeing how people keep bending themselves into a pretzel to condemn Michael and justify other characters makes that possibility arise in my head.

@@x-man9473 That's not it at all. It's really a form of tribalism. The survivors are seen as one, so what Michael did that the others didn't was kill one of his own. In fact, after what Michael did, the one thing that shocked me the most wasn't another killing - it was Jack pulling the trigger on Locke. Again, a member of his tribe.
