I live in the thumb area. We received over 30" due to the Lake Huron Lake effect snow. On 26th, many kids from the neighborhood got together to shovel driveways of elderly, police, fire, and essential workers (a term we did not have back then but we knew they were important). It was about 8pm when there was a large lightning strike that turned the entire sky blue. The thunder was very loud and some of the younger kids started to cry. Only 1 of 2 times I ever witnessed "thunder snow". After the strom had passed, the counter clock wise rotation brought in extremely cold temperatures from the Artic. Temperatures dropped to -20F and school was shut for 2 weeks. Our water pipes froze so we had to live with my Aunt in the city. My Mom got sick and I had to walk for a mile in about -30 wind chills to the pharmacy, which was closed. I finally found a small general store open as the owners lived above the store. They let me stay in the store to warm up before I had to go back. They gave me a chocolate bar because I was a good boy to help my mother. I ended up with some minor frost bite on my feet. However, it was a great time to spend indoors with my Mother and cousins. We played board games, charades and made popcorn and drank Faygo Pop until we could not have many more. It was one of the best quality times I remember with my extended family.

Long story short I ended up driving a tow truck for 3 days catching a nap when I had time in the white out of 78. Made more money in 3 days than I did at my regular job in a month + had a good time and got to know many good people.

I was 9yrs old. I remember it well. We lost power during the worst part of the storm when the winds were topping out My grandparents still had heat so we walked to their house. They lived 150 yards north of us. My mom was 5 months pregnant with my brother. My dad carried me. It took us 45 min to make the trip on foot. I will never forget it.

M-59 was a 2 lane road thru Highland Township only 1 lane was open and only 4 wheel drive trucks could get down it, Hickory Ridge Rd had a Road Commission grader with a huge plow on the front stuck in the middle of the road along with several cars. Me and my father were on our snowmobiles and stopped to look at the grader, after a few minutes we noticed their were car's under our snowmobiles. We went down Hickory Ridge to M-59 then came back and we counted 14 car's that we drove over. Only way to tell was the dip in between cars. School was closed for a week or more. My neighbor went in to labor and we had to pull her behind a snowmobile all the way to M-59 and Milford Rd were an Ambulance was waiting for us because they couldn't get any further west on M-59. It was a blast as a kid.

I lived in Grand Rapids during this storm. The snow drifted up to the eaves of our house in the front, and when I opened to front door, it was a wall of snow. We were able to get out the back door and that's where our neighbor's on their snow mobiles were taking orders for bread, milk, etc . They had those plastic sleds tied to the back and brought us back supplies.

What a storm that one was. I was 24 and loved not having to go to work for a few days. I had my own home in Clarkston MI and remembering how long it took to shovel my 60-foot driveway. I was young and full of energy and loved snow back then. Now, I like the mild winters we've been having. Cycles come and they go, so I am sure in time we will have winters with plenty of snow and cold temperatures. I can remember not that long ago two winters in a row that were very cold and plenty of snow. I can remember those winters easily, because I walked nearly every day at the park with my beloved Beagle-Baset Tootsie. She was an amazing companion. It was never too cold for that little darling. In fact, she loved the cold more than the hot summer for walking. I can remember plowing through snow up to my thighs so Tootsie could follow in my tracks. That year for the first time I saw a snowplow on a train clearing the tracks. Now I have all the equipment to deal with heavy snowfalls. If I don't use it during the winter, that is just fine with me. Well, let's see what Mother Nature has in store for the rest of the winter months. Hopefully, nothing severe. Thanks for taking me back to that amazing snowstorm. Oh, to be in my twenties again. Life goes buy so quickly.

I too remember this snowstorm. I was 11 years old and lived in Madison Heights, Michigan. It was absolutely surreal. I think we got over 20 inches of snow in just one day! However, as a kid growing up in the frozen wasteland of southeastern, Michigan, I absolutely loved it! The school system canceled classes for a few days and we kids made endless fortresses out of the snow drifts (which were ten feet high). I will never forget that snow storm as long as I live!

I lived in the country, in Allendale about 20 mins east of Grand Rapids. When the snowplows made it to our secondary rural roads, the drifts would blow over basically filling the roads only minutes after the plow went threw. The height of the snow on the sides of the road were much higher than your car. My dad at first was pulling people out of the ditch with his 4-wheel drive pickup. Then later, both my parents using their snowmobiles took neighbors to the store. Us kids went outside in our snowmobile suits, slid off the roof of the shed into a snow drift that wasn't too far from the top of the shed. I was 13 at the time and remember how happy my brothers and sisters and I were that we didn't have school for over a week. Those storms were an awesome event for a kid who was safe, warm inside their home.

I'm a musician, and I was booked to play in several cities in west and central Michigan during this storm. It really was amazing. I've never driven through so many white outs in my life! The city streets were like driving through tunnels because of the snow being plowed and piled up on the sides of the streets, at least 20 feet high.

In St Louis Michigan. My best friend. Isolated 3 days in the country. She couldn't get into town. Roads unforgivable. My father's home was one of the few that had power electricity. My best friend in 1978 our senior year. Made it to my home, stayed and showerr for the first time in three or four days. Plus was able to cook. It was devastating. Anyone who had snowshoes, snowmobiles, Cross Country Skis, downhill skis, sleds or toboggans were using them. Many lost their lives. Not in my small Hometown I don't remember that anyone lost their lives too heart attack or exposure. I am not for sure it's been many years. It was both beautiful and scary. We all felt like Warriors and survivors as we came through this.
@TheNoiseySpectator

I like that 😀. "We all felt like Warriors just for getting through it". When winter comes today I still carry a bit of that with me. 🐂 I always say if the electricity goes out, that is no more than a moderate sized inconvenience. Same if there is no _hot_ water, as long as the gas is still on and I have that two gallon stock pot for my stove and wash cloths. But, if *the water* goes out or becomes undrinkable, _then_ it it is time to pack up and move away! When I started College, I didn't have a car. (Nor did I have student loans, I have never been in debt in my life. 😀). But, we lived a mile from a Campus Bus Service city stop. I thought to myself " So what? People walk more than a mile everyday just wandering around the house. I can walk there and back everyday. 🤷🏼‍♂️" Then the "Spring Semesters" came! What did I do? I just bundled up and rolled with it. ⛄

I was snowed in a gas station that I worked at for 3 days in Benton Harbor, Michigan. Luckily I was able to eat vending machine food, (snacks)..I will never forget it because my oldest daughter was born that year of 78. The owner of the gas station must have tide on a 3 day drunk and when he came into the station he was so drunk, he chased me around the the garage with a crowbar yelling he was going to kill me. Needless to say, that was my last day working at any gas station. I never did find out what his problem was..

The snow nearly reached the top of the House, My Dad Cleared the Roof on his own he would not allow us on the Roof. The Snow he was shoveling off we were on the ground pilling it up away from the house so we had a Wall of Snow around the House. 3 years later we would have another Blizzard in 81 although not as bad as 78 this one packed a good amount of snow and wind we lost power in that one for 3 days.
