You know a story is incredible when during the climax each character takes turn saying one line each, finishing each other’s sentences, and spelling out explicitly what they learned during the story and how they grew. This writing is not even Disney-fied, they at least have nuance. This is legitimately what they do for shows for small children.

The people expecting Metzen to magically 'fix' this are ones I pity. This is an MMO that should've come to a close years ago. It's old, it's stagnated, it's a sprawling mess of disconnected expansions and ideas. It's creatively flatlined and narrative/storywise it finished what it had to say really with WotLK. Nobody can 'fix' the problems this ancient MMO has. It needs to progress, move forward, but Blizzard won't take the step required to really do that because this is their cash-cow.

@@maldlions5313 Everyone will likely have their own particular moment WoW 'finished', and that's fair. But I think the point is they should've called 'the end' a long time ago, and started work on an actual sequel. Create some new, real, actual narrative progression. Not just treading water. WoW is successful, they wouldn't even have had to shut it down right away, but they should've STARTED building something new maybe as much as a decade ago. The game is just filler now, they're just pumping out filler content to give the illusion that a 20 year old MMO is still new and fresh. Blizzard are lazy, and creatively bankrupt. They just don't seem to have any new ideas, or the drive or interest in creating them.

Sure some off ARR can be cheesy but the whole story build up from then to the conclusion in Endwalker is probably the best writing I’ve ever experienced in all the video games I’ve played in my entire life. 15 years ago I was big into WoW lore but almost everything I learned about it was off screen wether it was KZfaq, wowwiki, or books. FF14 story doesn’t make sense and is trash if you’re skipping everything which defeats the purpose. You must be trolling

If we’re going to talk about predictability WoW lore is littered with that. FF14 may not be dark and gritty all the time but it still has a lot of dark and gritty moments. The difference is WoW lore is told off screen 90% of the time while everything you need to know in FF14 is told in the game and in a better way of delivery than WoW. Erm, excuse me? According to the esteemed genius Taliesin, it wasn't Danuser that wrote any of this crap, but the ghost of Alex Afrasiabi possessing him and forcing him to write it. Before he molested all those women and got fired, Afrasiabi wrote the entire script for all of the WoW expansions 10 years in advance, and the writing team couldn't do anything about it. The current writers are just innocent victims, really

So everything after Legion was Afrasabi, up to early slands and Danuser had to take over partway through Slands and try to do something with it, and really has only had DF to do much. That’s why most of the new saga is all continuing the legion story threads since Metzen is back running it

Both factions have until one of G'OWO'D's offspring shows up again at the end of the expansion, and the next expansion is determined by whether the players kill it or not. It's totally not like the Moon from Majora's Mask, shut up ;)

My brother in christ, what is that Disney garbage of an ending? That is seriously shocking to see having just completed FFXIV Endwalker, and what did I get from that? Spoilers, but... Discovering everything that Primal Mommy went through before, during, and after the apocalypse. Fighting Primal Mommy, and her telling you that you've been a good champion, with a softer variation of her boss music playing in the background the whole time. Going to the edge of the universe to fight dead people's feelings. And finally ending it all off with an anime battle that checks all the boxes of that trope, but at least it felt badass. But this... this puts Dom Toretto's "F a M i L Y" to shame. God that was beyond sappy.

The issue is that the stories like this are done by committee, you get a dozen writers throwing their ideas, then those ideas are filtered by the marketing department, and the marketing department is basically an algorithm in the shape of people for the purpose of maximizing profits and sales with the least amount of risk possible. New and different things is scary for marketing because its not been tested first on a grand scale. You then do this for several years and you eventually either fire the writers that don't meet the marketing teams standards, or you brainwash existing writers so that they only think the way the marketing team would. Then you get other departments and CEOs putting their 2 cents in, which at the end of the day will always lead to Disney Marvel system as they are the most concentrated source of this kind of story rot.

I remember when I played Warcraft 2 at the age of four / five and thought "I'm playing a big boy game", and it stuck with me until I quite Wrath of the Lich King / beginning of Cata. Now, if I were a five year old playing WoW, I'd think "Oh! A game appropriate for my age!" How the quality of writing has fallen.
