Register in South Dakota, I had the same problem getting my subie flagged and vin locked in Colorado, only way to get it unflagged was to put everything back to stock and get it inspected.(was definitely not doing that) Did some research and all you need to get registered in SD is your title and fill out a registration form, they don’t need the car there or anything. You’ll just have to pay registration fee and taxes on how ever much your car is worth in their system along with some mail that has your name and address on it and you’ll get plates same day along with a registration card with your California address on it lol! And to reregister the car every year all you have to do is call and pay over the phone and they’ll mail you tags! But yea my subies running SD plates now, it was definitely worth the trip!

South Dakota, lawrence county. All through the mail, less than $60. Nothing in person required. Just call the treasurers office and they’ll walk you through the process. Takes like 3 weeks in total.

let me tell you Dealer plates are a life saver no registration no smog no nothing as long as the dealership owns it your chillen you might save on insurance to. The start up costs are the biggest but after that it’s so useful to have!!

Aye, just a heads up, if you register it in Utah (tooele county) you dont have emissions or safety inspections. I know it'd be hard but i think it'd be worth it.

My 80’s turbo car got popped 1.5 weeks before I moved out of California 4 years ago. I was never pulled over in nearly 10 years, but a cop heard my blow off valve at 9:30pm, did a U-turn in the road, and pulled me. He wanted to send me to the state ref, but I showed him my invoice from the transport company. He was mad, lol. He told me, _”Alright, after this date I had better not see this car on the road.”_ I just told him, _”You won’t. 😎”_

IDK if its just where I live in Indiana but we don't even inspect cars. I've bought so many from out of state and there is no smog or inspection. All I've ever had to do is the sheriffs inspection to make sure its not stolen and then I go to BMV and register it same day.

Definelty is a process however Montana is one of the best states to register a vehicle aside from avoiding taxes. Using a virtual business address (for a small business) allows you to use that address which is then located at a mail center in well known commercial areas. Businesses or government officials will see your address at a big office building downtown even if it’s just a start up business. Only hassle will be taking the vehicle to Montana.

I have a feeling this going to happen to any modify cars that are loud or attract cops. That's why if ever get sent to state ref i swap everything back to stock. Sucks doing all that work but just to avoid a ban.

Best advice i can give you is find a non smog county, rent a small office space or shop space and apply for a business license at this space. Id register all the cars as company fleet and run my merch or whatever other ventures thru there. Riding around on plates from somewhere else can be risky over time if u dont have your business etc in place.

In California, you may have to rely on buying more and more expensive stock boosted cars. That way the ECU can be tuned and detuned on demand to change turbine speeds and add breather mods.

I had an 03 cobra terminator modified making 700 at the wheels and eventually that time came for smog, but got tired of paying or finding smog shop that will pass me. I sold the car and never again bought something like that. It’s just to hard here in Cali.

got my car registered in arizona, only needed to bring the pink and buy insurance in that state. lots of custom plate options too.

I registered my s14 RHD Silvia in Montana…. No inspection needed and I live in Kansas. Plus I paid a bit extra to have a permanent plate so I don’t have to ever renew my registration as long as I own the vehicle. This is possible for any cars 11 years or older.

Maybe try someone in yuma az short drive and i think they dont smog but itll need vin inspection

Florida or South Carolina is a good idea because you can register your car here as long as you say that you work mainly in that state, plus no inspection whatsoever just pay the renew ever 2 years

As you're working out what to do next, be sure to read up on the auto insurance implications. Is it a requirement that your car be registered and insured at the same address/area? Can your insurer drop you if the addresses aren't the same? If they do cancel your policy claiming fraud, will it be flagged on your DMV record such that it'll be expensive or impossible to get the car insured again? Since OBD2 ECU validation went into effect in 2021, a lot of enthusiasts have been backed into a corner. Best of luck to you whatever route you choose.

Hey, have it registered non operational, pay for registration, and drive it around. I did that and when I got pulled over I told police car has running problems and been in shop, now you are drivingg car for test run to clear smog for minimum 10 miles to qualify for smog. Go register in another state is easier but do the non operational reg first.
