Nice to have a full high quality episode of Michael Aspel's Blockbusters. The music isn't the same, possibly because the original was owned by Carlton, and the show aired on the BBC. Not the best theme ever; sounds cheesy if you ask me. Actual adults on the show seem like a decent idea, but it loses the charm of the original. And Michael Aspel isn't exactly Bob Holness. At least the original producer handled the show. It's an okay revival, but not to the standard of Central/Carlton's version.

I thought Michael Aspel was a comedian, but here he seems to be just going through the motions. Still, here in the US, we had adults play the game, so it confused me to see teenagers doing it in the UK. It therefore caught my attention to see there was a UK version played by adults. (Simon Mayo would do the second one in 2012.) Also, the video temporarily froze at 17:26. What was the correct answer to that question?

This is page 1 of "If it ain't broke, don't fix it.". It's not that change is always a bad thing. Admittedly, by 1997, there surely needed to be a refresh to some degree. There were changes during the Bob Holness years, most notably the opening titles saw a huge makeover in 1986. But it was well calculated and improved the show. Here, every change inflicted massive damage. Every single element was tweaked for the poorer. Okay, so they were lumbered with a couple of changes which circumstances forced upon them. But it was horrible to see good old Blockbusters downgraded so much. It's probably pointless talking in depth about what was wrong, it's obvious enough. But a dishonourable mention should definitely be made regarding Michael Aspel. Was he doing this as his community service? Don't get me wrong, I could praise him enormously for virtually all of his other varied work throughout his distinguished career. But this was undoubtedly his failure. Why did he appear so reluctant to be hosting Blockbusters? Even in the publicity shots for the series he looked like he was smiling at gunpoint. Would this show have pulled through with a different host? Hhmm, maybe not. The great Holness himself might have struggled to spin gold from it. But it would certainly have helped if the host could have been even remotely arsed.

I would love it if you had an episode of Relatively Speaking hidden in there somewhere. You know, with Gordon Burns?

This aired at 4:00 pm, but midway through the series it moved to a 1:40 pm, likely due to poor ratings. You could tell from Michael’s body language, facial expression and somewhat deflated tone of voice that he was fed up all the time. This is one of the worst quiz show revivals of all time! The next two reincarnations improved, and I reckon if the 2019 version retained 5-Gold Run format without that Hexican Standoff crapshoot it would be close to perfect.

Compared to the new version with Dara O' Brain, this version is a much better attempt at a revival.
