I always appreciate that you make life easier for the next person. Lifting the access so it doesn’t have to be dug up again is so great. You also take the time fix the ground back to the way it was no wonder everyone loves you so much.

Hey Gavin nice result, they seemed like nice customers too. That black slime type stuff is most likely biofilm, a bacteria that grows into a gooey jelly like substance. It can be caused by many things including medication / digestive issues when a lot of undigested fat sticks to the pipes and gives the bacteria a good place to set up home. Certain types of body washes can also cause it if they are not rinsed away well enough as they coat the pipes, you often see it in washing machines where too much fabric softener is used as it also forms a nice bacteria friendly coating, hair in shower pipes is another good host. Since it is a bacteria it will often come back if the pipes are not spotlessly cleaned / bleached after removal of the slime. You can get products like bio-clean which are non caustic biological cleaners (bacteria) that will eat and dissolve all that black stuff, takes a bit of time to get working but after cleaning a blockage of that stuff it is a good follow on treatment to try and stop it coming back.

If the X-Files taught me anything, it’s _never_ to mess with the black oily sludge you find underground 😱

I think that you were spot on when you thought the clog was from medication. I worked in a hospital and cleared numerous drains that had the same type of rubbery stuff clogging the sink drains. I was told that it was from certain types of IV’s that would jell up when exposed to the open air. Nurses would dump unused IVs in the sink and due to low water flow faucets there would not be enough water to flush the drains completely.

I like the attention you pay to detail, like preparing before digging even starts so that there's not a terrible mess afterwards, using a Furnco (sp?) to absorb movement in the joint, taping the clamps so they're clean for the next plumber (hopefully you), and then restoring the ground back to how it was before. Just overall a really good and thoughtful job

I found some of this stuff in my parents washing machine! They were elderly and disabled. Apparently they were soiling clothing and just dumping in washer. It was almost tar like. Glad to know now. Combined they took about 65 medications!

It likely could be psyllium powder. That product is used in fiber laxatives and gels up if not enough water is provided or a load got dumped into the sewer line. It looks like that consistency. Or activated charcoal slurry, which used to be used for stomach pumping in overdose situations. It is nasty, gooey, and gets all over clothes. It's likely a combination of more than one thing. And ever since I've seen first-hand from your videos the issues with wipes, I don't flush them any longer.

Above the blackboard in the classroom was a large sign that read "If you don't have time to do it right, when will you have time to do it over". I've really tried to live by that all my life. This was very interesting. Black usually means old blood (top of the gut bleed), but the agar consistency was incredible. You mentioned pipe relining to your client, I'm guessing you don't do them, but if you were ever to, it would be great to have footage, however brief. More rain your way, hopefully more (no-dig) stormwaters for you.

That looks similar to the algae we see sometimes in A/C condensate drain lines Although that looks a bit "tougher". While I'm thinking about it - Calling all HVAC guys. Use DWV fittings when you can instead of pressure fittings on the larger condensate lines. It will make it easier to clear. If you can't use DWV, consider electrical sweeps. They will help too.

I never thought of medications causing issues is sewer lines. I suddenly thought of the chemo patients at home and radioactive waste that's expelled into the sewer lines. Never thought of that before outside of the hospital. 🤯

The black sludge is mineral deposits, if they have hard water the minerals will build up in drain pipes over time. Very difficult to get rid of.

After we bought our house we had a new dunny installed cause the old one used to get black mould a lot, when it was removed that same looking sludge lined the pipes, I always thought it was just mould/fungus. The new dunny is now getting the black mouldy stuff too under the rim where the water flows around. Makes me wonder now how far it goes, as over the years we get a stink from the pit thingy next to the house. Cleaning the dunny I have to use bleach/domestos as it help it to unstick and desolve. Maybe I need to dump 50 bucks of that shit down the pipes too

Some people will flush old outdated or unused medications down the toilet. Looks like some one flushed a large bottle of Metamucil or the likes of it down the toilet. I flew jumbo jet all over the world and virtually all hotels requested that "no" toilet paper be flushed down the toilet. They had a covered water proof container for you to put toilet paper in. I adopted that system for my house. Yes I have been to your country many times...I even brought my skydiving gear so I could skydive in Australia and Hawaii. I had a great life...retired now.
