Judd Reid demonstrates some simple and effective drills to block and counter simultaneously against low kicks. Using the opponents attack to launch an effective counter and barrage of strikes. Suitable for full contact karate and kickboxing

This is real karate. All of these moves would work very well - even against a trained fighter. Very well thought out. A move within a move. Doesn't give the other person a chance to defend. These aren't show moves for a movie. I have trained in Shotokan for 20+ years and I'm telling you this is effective and practical. Nice job Sensei!

Hmmm, yes and no...ppl throw in combinations. Low kick then hook for example. These guys throw from a low guard. As soon as they have blocked and start countering...they will get hit due to the combination coming at them. Case in point: body shots around 55sec mark

I did a few years Karate when I was young and I did love it very much. Lately my 11yo daughter wants to learn self defence and I’ve been researching on styles that are effective. Most styles it seems fall behind now that MMA is more popular and I’ve been watching fighters from various styles go at it in the ring. They all seem to dodge and evade attacks as does western boxing. Karate it seems even in Okinawa just stand there and get hit adopting the whatever doesn’t kill you philosophy. My question is why? Wouldn’t that hasten your defeat or am I missing something?

First of all "Oss" constantly used in Kyokushin is a very bad word and should never be used within Karate. Secondly the reason that the combinations shown in the vid look so good is that in this style head punches are not allowed or practiced. A head punch would instantly nullify these counters.

Yeah, except for the fact that they don't punch to the face, making the style quite flawed when it comes to real fighting. And, the perfect example of this is when I owned an MMA school for 10 years and had 12 different systems available, each taught by experts in their styles. We actually had a few Kyokushin black belts with 10+ years experience fight some of my Muay Thai students who only trained for about 6 months (sanctioned fights) under Muay Thai rules. My Thai fighters DEMOLISHED the Kyokushin guys with ease! You fight how you train. Never prepping for punches to the face left the Kyokushin fighters extremely ill-prepared, even though they had at least 20 times more experience.

@@dariusemrani4091 Karate has its own etiquette and promotes, apart from fighting, development of good character and GOOD MANNERS. "Oss" is a very nasty arrogant term which is in fact casual Japanese street language and has absolutely no place in the Dojo. Anyone who makes the mistake of using it in a traditional Okinawan Dojo will cause offence and immediately be kicked out. The correct response to the Sensei, to signify one's understanding, is Hai Sensei, never "Oss".

Thanks for your comment .Yes correct, interestingly a lot of people comment on hands at different times. We all know smart fighters know when to have their hands up and when they dont need to. Given this is a conditioning drill focussed on thigh kicks and conditioning the thighs the importance of hands up is not quite relevant in this particular case. A lot of smart fighters also realise their is a difference berween kicking range and punching range so they know where their hands can be. I guarantee if the drill was about head punching, hands would be up. Just a point to note the young guy on the left is also a state junior under 18’s boxing champion. Different drills, different skills.

As a Muay Thai fighter, everytime I throw a roundhouse, I keep that side of my head guarded. I’m so most if not all Thai boxers do the same. That’s why you should to the body. Also notice the karate roundhouse doesn’t get thrown after stepping the lead outside of the opponent thus the karate kick hits with less force. Throwing the 2 on the same side as the leg you just used to kick with is a great strike to learn. It’s easier to learn this if you learn how the Superman punch works.

Judd's Kyokushin dojo also trains to throw punches to head whenever they spar with gloves, not just barrknuckle training. There are those gloved sessions on that channel. If you allow those punches in bareknuckle kumite, you would have many unnecessary injuries such as broken knuckles and facial cuts. That's why fighting gloves were invented in thr first place. Source site:

I didn’t know they sparred with hand protection to throw punches to the face. Sparring bare knuckle is a bad idea. That would be similar to sparring with elbows allowed. Not to mention the fist can break easier, putting you out or training for a while. Why doesn’t Kyokushin open the hips and throw stronger roundhouse kick? Why are they standing so close and not moving in and out of range? It’s probably different in sparring.
