Necessity is the mother of invention, and it's a beautiful piece of engineering as well, in an AR straight pull is obvious, but in standard hunting and sport rifles is pure joy

I'm lucky enough to have bought an AR15 built by Mark Bradley of Bradley Arms before his untimely death. It really is a work of art. Machined, fitted and finished with precision and care that mass manufacture just can't match. Basically the Holland and Holland of ARs.

I believe the missing lug is to satisfy Austrian regulations, something about making the bolt not useable with full auto components. Not sure how removing a lug would affect that though.
@brianjames8600
@brianjames8600 2 жыл бұрын
LMT does that on their Enhanced bolt and they say it’s because it disperses the stress more evenly on the lugs to prevent lug 1 & 7 shearing. That’s likely why a German manufacturer did it. It would have no bearing on full auto or anything like that.
@lazylobster31
@lazylobster31 2 жыл бұрын
I didn't know that, thanks for sharing! But I still think it's done for Austrian regulation. I read on an Austrian forum that they had to remove a lug to conform to the law, even if it had no affect. Lawmakers don't know how guns work. They must be doing this to sell the same model more easily in every European country. I had one of the standard Schmeisser semi auto AR's and it had all the lugs.
@Stip96
@Stip96 2 жыл бұрын
im from Austria and my Schmeisser M5F has the removed lug, also the corresponding position in the barrel extension is blocked so a standard "foreign" bolt with all the lugs cant pass and it wouldnt go into battery. i think the laws have changed since and it might no longer be necessary. it still sucks tho, because if i want a replacement bolt i have to buy the crippled austrian version
@mytmousemalibu
@mytmousemalibu 2 жыл бұрын
The LMT enhanced bolt came to mind. As mentioned, its for bolt balancing in case of the LMT, to not have unequal loading of the lugs. Supposedly this is reason high round count bolts can/do shear a lug, usually the 7th lug.
@lazylobster31
@lazylobster31 2 жыл бұрын
Interesting, weird that they would have removed the lug and not filled the slot if the law asked for that, seems like not going all the way. Well, it's time to burn that barrel down and replace it and the bolt by non-crippled ones, see that as a motivation to shoot more ;)

I like this design, pity it can't be imported to Australia because it looks "scary". We have a few Australian designed ones but they aren't well suited to service rifle style shooting. They are either pump action or they put the cocking handle on the left which means you need to break your position for every shot, also means you can't use a sling for support. I think I did remember seeing one with the cocking handle on the correct ergonomic side but they put it so far forward it was redundant.

It's why you never give away rights for free. Australia was full of fudds that believed magazines were useless. So they gave away their magazine rights without much resistance. Then the next year, more rights were asked for. And more. And more. To the point of a ban for anyone that isn't rich.

Id actually own something like that in a new long range cartridge like 6mm arc or 6.5g. They should, however, "commit" to this and not mill the charging handle spot, only go with one bolt hold open for clearing misfeeds, etc. I recall something about some companies skipping the lug across from the extractor to make the forces on the bolt symmetrical and reduce chances of lug failure? But my memory is hazy on the details, and I seem to recall it being hokum. Greetings from the US

Back in Holland I used to use my HBAR Oberland Arms for 100m "Target Rifle" equivalent with tuned loads (69gn SMK). I didn't notice any difference between gas on and gas off, but there was a big difference between loading from the mag and single loading. I didn't have a loading sled (Brownells etc. wouldn't ship them to Europe at that time) so would chuck one in the side, reach over and drop the bolt (this was sling supported with target iron sights, and I was shooting consistently 96-99 on a 1 MOA bullseye, gauged to 8mm cos that's how it was done)

For Americans, building one of these would be pretty easy. You can get a side charging upper so the only mods you'd need to make would be to remove the gas rings, gas tube, and spin the gas block around to block the port. Then it could be converted back if desired. Maybe make a custom charging handle to get it where you want. I'd like some feedback from shooters who have used these for tips on the optimum bolt knob position. Is a standard buffer still desirable or just empty out the weights?

I used for the 2 I built Green Mountain gunsmith special barrels ( an unprofiled blank) so .990 from chamber to muzzle no gas port, had to buy the crowning tool to put an 11 degree target crown on them, the BCG was a Bear Creek aresenal side charging upper with the BCG. Both are very accurate. you do however have to reach for the handle to cock them. Not a big deal for a bench gun. just pull it back and let the spring seat it. Uintah Precision makes a true bolt action AR but it very proprietary and expensive.

I have never been all that interested in ARs but I do find these intriguing, especially being able to manipulate the bolt without totally breaking you grip. However as an American traditionalist, I would be far more interested in a lever action version. There is a short utube clip on a "one off" Ruger 96 that was reconfigured as a "modern sporting" rifle. Now that caught my attention! As I think on it the finger movements for working the action are very similar on the two but with the hardest bit being in the opposite direction. Hmm, we'll have to see where the price falls if they ever reach the US? Thanks for the preview Bloke

@@BlokeontheRange thanks Mike I wasn't aware of that gun but it does sound like a bit of a cludge, a moving pistol grip seems like it might defeat the purpose of a pistol grip in the first place. The Ruger that I mentioned retained the original lever but it was repositioned the verticall follow the leading edge of the pistol grip. If I remember correctly, he was moving the lever by simply opening and closing his hand. A very similar motion to what you demonstrated here, which seems to be ideal and a very natural movement. That is the type of motion that many of us cowboy action shooters strive to achieve with our lever guns in our efforts for conservation of movement in order to shave time. Cheers!

As someone who is right handed but left eye dominant, it drives me nuts how few AR manufacturers make ambi rifles/lowers(and the ones that do cost like $250.) I don't know if it's a difficult thing to get right(though it doesn't seem so), or if it has something to do with parts interchangeability(though I don't think it's that either, since every company I'm aware of that makes them-including a random guy I found on gunbroker who makes them at his home-provide all of the propriety parts needed when you purchase the lower), or what the deal is, but I feel like lefties and righties(and especially cross dominant folks like me) could all benefit from ambi guns. It just really surprises me that in 2022, with all of the seemingly endless number of AR makers, parts makers/sellers, etc., and more importantly, combined with the fact that 30% of people in the U.S. are left eye dominant(meaning that nearly 1 in every 3 shooters is/probably should be shooting their long guns lefty), that only a handful of companies make ambi guns/lowers, and only one that I'm aware of(Stag Arms) makes completely lefty guns(meaning that even the ejection port is on the left side of the gun.)

@@BlokeontheRange I'm not sure exactly what you mean. What is the "risk" involved in selling ambi rifles/lowers? Or at least making them an option, so that if it is more expensive(whether that's due to the extra/different machining, the extra parts, or having two different versions of their guns/lowers)they can charge more the ambi guns? I hear/see people all the time at the range, gun shops, in the occasional class, etc. either say they wish they had an ambi/left handed gun, or more often, ask me where I got mine because they either didn't know they existed, or couldn't find one, or are lefties(or like me are righties who are cross eye dominant) and have just always dealt with having right handed guns(and everything else.) **edit** Sorry, I just realized my comment may have come across as argumentative. The only thing I wonder about these straight pulls is the case extraction, especially with "hot" ammunition. It had been an issue in the past, for sure, with people needing to hold the rifle against their bodies while pulling the charging handle, or at worst, mortaring their rifles. Therefore, my question is whether manufacturers today have changed things in the chamber a bit to accommodate reliable extraction (like much better tolerancing, which would definitely make the semi-auto ones run well, too), or do they just put a list of recommended ammunition for the best shooting experience? It certainly doesn't look like there's any accommodation for primary extraction like in "regular" bolt guns, though the handle would give a degree of leverage, especially when you try to go for rapid shots. In my inexperienced opinion, it does appear that this rifle has the potential for really good rates of fire, about as good as "slow" semi-auto shots, probably. There's very little movement that needs to be done since you can easily reach for the handle. I do wonder if I can find a direct comparison of rate of fire between this type of system and a regular bolt action, everything else being equalised, of course.
@BlokeontheRange
@BlokeontheRange 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, there's no primary extraction, so that can be a problem with sticky ammo. But the chamber fouls much less than a semiauto so provided it's clean and the ammo isn't sticky, it's not a major problem.

The market for them is fairly small, and the market for LH versions is even smaller. There are some adaptations to the T-handle which sorta kinda work, and I've seen some custom ones made up with left-side charging upper receivers. But for an off-the-shelf mass-market product, you can forget about it unfortunately.
