Banditry in Baringo, Turkana, West Pokot, Samburu, Elgeyo /Marakwet and Laikipia Counties has been a problem for many government administrations to deal with for decades. In an effort to restore law and order, dozens of security personnel sent to the difficult region have died.
Enock Sikolia looks at why the Kenya Defence Forces were sent after bandits and why is not an easy ride.

Military might alone rarely solves insurgencies that are embedded within civilian communities unless underlying grievances like a right to education, jobs, food security etc are also addressed. Failure to do so could see this military operation drag on for years.

Then you haven't heard much about the Mt. Elgon scenario, have you? Millitary intervention works if it's brutal enough to achieve permanent deterrence. Previous police interventions in these castle rustling areas failed to achieve deterrence because they were not brutal enough to cultivate fear. Their lack of capacity, in fact, leaves these bandits motivated and more confident in their abilities. How do you think colonialists conqured those they colonized, or those who achieve success in coups do it? They leave no stone unturned, using their millitary capacity to not only win, but completely terrify the enemy to a level of deterrence. On a smaller scale, that explains why caning was effective in schools, with the more brutal a teacher was in caning, the more fear and respect they amassed.

Thanks President Ruto for acting upon this problem atleast..When i was growing up in Central Uganda,my Dad had over 250heads of cattle but gradually lost most of them to cattle rustlers whose activities went on unabated by the Govt and Police..we formed some vigilante village groups wic wud dissolve during school time as most of us the young boys wud go back to boarding school..I had a close attachment to some 2 very humble heifers that were later stolen during one of our school terms..I cried my eyes out on learning abt this and to this day,my pain is as fresh as it was over 15yrs ago.Our Ugandan govt has not done much to stop the vice in Central Uganda for reasons they know best much as this doesn't happen in the West where cattle are much more less protected by families...I will always miss our dear cattle and dont know how to dissolve my anger towards this Govt for doing more less nothing to fix this problem in my region..Thanks KDF and President Ruto for acting,only those that have lost some animals can know the true excruciating pain of losing them..Don't think iwill ever forget and forgive.

Absolutely the worst way to face what you call bandits. This is not Elshabaab, they have no battalion, formidable arms and neither do they have units. This are small cells in avery vast area. I guarantee you, they will not find arms or anyone to fight, because those we call bandits have already intergraded with people in urban areas until the KDF which is just flexing its muscles for shore off is gone. They have played this game before, they have seen this scene before. Which idiot will wait for death. Please form barracks there, not one or two , as many as it's needed, and equip those soldiers to the teeth and let the soldiers do humanitarian stuff like building school or basically developing this area. This will be a permanent solution, otherwise the commander in chief is misadviced just like all the others before him.

You know I am good in Geography, Suguta valley is the lowest part in Kenya, surrounded by platou in the bedrock of the great rift valley. The great rift valley cut from Jordan through red sea and join the boundary plate Nubian plate and Somali plate which which is known as Divergent fault which is splitting apart one inch a year... All mountain ranges platou and lakes within the bedrock of the rift are either an active volcano or extinct volcano including Lake Naivasha, L. Elementaita, L. Nakuru, Lake Baringo, Lake Bogoria, L. Kamnarok, L. Turkana, L. Natron, L. Tanganyika, L. Kivu, L. Magadi. The great rift valley is known as geological active. Correct me where I went wrong. Thank you.

During the 1982 failed coup attempt,it is documented that then President Moi,in the event the coup plotters succeeded,was to retreat to the Kerio valley and wage a rebel war against the Coup plotters. This lays credence to the notion that politicians,especially the Kalenjin ones are very reluctant to support disarmament efforts since they believe that the armed civilians in their areas are like a 'rebel force in waiting' should the need arise.

No need to use mid range artillery to fight rustlers,their modus operandi is hit and run,they are constantly moving and have no permanent base or post.The most effective is 60mm mortar less cumbersome and easier to handle..reinforment from attack helicopters or armed drones.

The land is harsh but stunningly beautiful. Organized cattle ranching, wildlife conservation and tourism would thrive here. But the government must put an end to nomadic pastoralism as a way of life. It encourages lawlessness, illiteracy, and totally senseless way of life. Criminal behavior is expected if people who just roam the wilderness all year round carrying weapons and with no fixed home!..

@@lelejukdavid551 yes, banditry has been fueled by competition over resources, particularly water and grazing land. It can be seen in Northern Uganda, the border between Kenya & Ethiopia, south Sudan, Somalia & Tanzania. You will notice that in these regions their governments forgot about them & so what remains of them is just cattle, nothing more or less & so cattle is the only resource not even water or any other natural resource. These are the groups that grow into something else known as the "separatists" & if they are not taken care of early enough they automatically graduate from regional threat to national threat in form of a militias or rebel groups for example "Joseph Konyi"

Kenya's army appears professional, however why so many types of assault rifles? AKs, M4s, SCARS, G3s... Don't they have a standard???
@Simon_Nzioki
@Simon_Nzioki 8 ай бұрын
G3 was the standard rifle since independence, AKs were adopted when Yugoslavia collapsed and they were selling everything at a throw away price, FN SCARs were adopted when US Army Rangers was training Kenyan Ranger Taskforce, initially it was to replace G3 and AKs but they realised it wasn't worth it spending $30 million on acquisition of rifles when you can use the same amount to build a small arms factory to manufacture M4 carbines The mixture would most probably cause logistical nightmare in a full out war, but I believe with time M4 will replace the rest, the FN SCAR might be confined to special forces while the G3 will be used for ceremonial purposes, but if it was upto me I would prefer them to adopt AK series and get license to produce AK-12, I just have a love for Soviet weapons.

If this banditry issue is not solved permanently,it will metamorphose into an insurgency. It started as a cultural activity then into a commercial activity. Soon,a disgruntled politician might decide to use these people as rebels and militia like is the situation in Chad and South Sudan in the past. In the Kerio valley counties of Baringo,E/Marakwet and Westpokot it is estimated by Amnesty International that there are over 500K guns(assault rifles) in the hands of civillians. This is true bearing in mind that most households in the region have an average of 3 gun with others having over 15 depending on the family size. Those are enough to start an insurgency.
