You are correct, Blood and Cheese. In the book it is far worse as all the kids were awake and there is actually a third child, a younger boy and Alicent is also in the room to witness it. They have Helena pick which son to die and she chooses the youngest thinking he will understand the least what is to happen, so Cheese whispers to the boy, “ your mom picks you to die” and then they decapitate the eldest son instead. So Helena has to live with the guilt of looking at her living son knowing she chose him to die. In the show Cheese asks Daemon what do they do if they can’t find Aemond, and he just gives them a look. Based off how they keep repeating “a son for a son” it can be assumed that Daemon gave them the order to go for Aegons son. In the book the order was always for Aegons son, never Aemond.

It was much darker in the book. It's a shame because Helaena and her kids are the only good innocent ones on team green. The rest of the Hightowers are guilty of treason and murdering loyalists to Queen Rhaenyra but not Helaena and her children. Otto got this whole domino effect going all so he could stay in power. Well, now both sides feel the sting of loss, and the realm will burn 🔥

Actually Rhaenyra had 6 children total, 5 boys 2 are from Daemon and visenya was their daughter.

I see a lot of fans saying the blood and cheese scene wasn't brutal enough but I disagree. I think the scene is perfect as is but it could do with one more line of dialogue from Helaena offering her own life instead of just the necklace.
