I remember a match in MWO where my team had all formed a nice column as we marched to our destination. A locust was jogging alongside us, and by the time we realized it wasn’t one of ours, it had stripped the armor from the back of one of our assault mechs and every missile mech on the enemy team was firing volleys at us.

If you succeed and come back alive. Then there's repairs, maintenance, munitions, and maybe modifications. After your mech, there's potentially debt, along with dropship upkeep, communication bills, food, jump ship fees... Granted, you might not be shouldering debts, but then you're hoping your employer has enough c-bills to meet their debts, unit upkeep, transportation, food, fuel, firepower,.... and eventually your paycheck.

I'm currently part of a MechWarrior rpg campaign. We just finished luring a pirate crew into a trap on a frozen death world so we could steal a bigger dropship from them. We also hired all of the crew to work for us after we cored their Captain's mech (who we've bested in three other engagements and have stolen from before). We're now likely to go out for beer and pancakes to celebrate. Oh, all of the PCs are also illiterate. God I love BattleTech.

If you are isolated/last man standing, and are in an open plain, then you are fucked. Sorry. Source: I was once the cheeky little flea who got a Most Damage award on a god damn Atlas before my lance came in and blasted him before he could properly turn. Also I'm the unlucky sod in a Catapult who kept dying to the little fucks before I switched some of my tonnage to SRMs.

I still have MW4 Mercs scene from around 10 years ago when I was playing it. Archer, Catapult, Treb and Rifleman were sending volleys of AC/LRMs and one of my lance pilots in Flea i think was dodging it all. The steady diet of SpaCo was strong in that one (Space Cocaine)

As someone who actually started _liking_ the Locust... that thing is scary as fuck in HBS Battletech once you start playing with the armament. Give it some ER lasers and watch it start tearing apart mechs 5 times it's size while still being a massive nightmare to hit.

Mechwarriors make bank... assuming they survive long enough to get the skills to be worth more and/or are promoted in company/army's rank. A C-bill, the unit of currency in battletech, is cited in 1980 as being 5 USD in the battletech year 3025. In 2021 USD, that translates to 11.91 USD... Now for Megamek numbers and storytime. So, a average mechwarrior (like in the game Megamek, check it out but be warned it is niche) is making like 1500 C-bills a month is actually making the equivalent of almost 18k USD a month and 214k USD a year. Not including bonuses, hazard pay, payout after contraction etc etc. [For example, one regular skill mechwarrior of mine got a payout of 7 million... C-Bills... or 83.3 million USD (2021) or 35 million USD (1980). Their total pay (1 year of service with the company) is sitting at 220k C-bills] The wages (and payouts) can get a bit insane. But then realize how much money a company is making/dealing with and how, I suppose, even a average mechwarrior needs dozens of combat drops before they even begin to be considered to be exiting greenhorn status. Ex: A Medium Lance of 2 Griffons, Phoenix Hawk, and Hunchback is 17 million C-Bills and my current Company has taken on contacts with final value anywhere from 10-80 million c-bills after final payouts, expenses, salvage sold etc etc

It's not enough that light mechs run around like freaks, with armor that couldn't pass for paper, but the 6-10 minute bullying when you are in a mech, with dual AC/20 and you just can't turn around. If you stop turning, than the pain ends sooner, which is somehow even worse.
