Id definitely say Queen Boudica's side were the "good guys" here. They were fighting against imperialism and the destruction of their lands and people, and the queen herself was avenging her family, especially her tortured daughters, and herself. The Romans had no business being there or defiling her and her daughters, so whatever bad happens to them, they brought upon themselves

@@zippyparakeet1074 Well actually the odds were even worse it’s said that her army swelled to over hundred thousand by the time she fought her final battle with lower estimates being eighty thousand. The Roman army however only numbered just under 10,000 so the odds was more like 10 to 1 or if you want to be generous 8 to 1 and the first field battle he mentioned that Boudicca won he didn’t even mention that that force only numbered 2000 to Boudicca’s 80,000 so 40 to 1 definitely not a great commander.

Thanks. Yes, had to make sure to mention the somewhat unreliable narrators we have to rely on! With regard to Tacitus, it is almost the scholarly consensus that the passage is authentic and consistent with other contemporary accounts, and likely lent credence by the general disdain Tacitus holds for Christians e.g., he possibly references the “cannibal” trope (“abominations”) applied to Christians with regard to consumption of the Eucharist, which we might not expect a Christian forgery to include when attempting to portray Christianity positively. Tacitus is generally anti-Nero, though, and, as you said, Christian writers would have a motive to emphasize martyrdom, but I ultimately don’t think there’s enough evidence behind the interpolation theory. At any rate, always willing to have my mind changed if new information arises.

@@HistoryDose Fair enough! It is in any case a complex issue without a clear answer, not least because we unfortunately have to fill in a lot of gaps left by sources that haven't survived. Including some we only know about because other writers reference them.

I for one think it is real, simply because a fabrication would be better and more detailed? If fabricated the writers would have fixed the inaccuracies and anti Christian context of the text, for example Jesus is mis named he's called Christus where as a medieval Scribe would have called him Christus Jesus. The Christians are labeled as having horrible vices and being loathsome no zealous Monk writing in a Monastery wishing to embellish history by altering an ancient document would dare refer to Martyrs in this manner these are people he would have idolized. To refer to them as such at that time would be like asking a modern day Muslim to frame the Charlie Hebdo comics of Muhammad, it just wouldn't happen. If it was faked the description would have been more pro Christian more proud of the martyrs and sorrowful aswell. Tacitus has just the right amount of information to not quit know who these obscure Christians are but just enough official state propaganda to blame them as the guilty party. Plus, the only people who seem to have a problem with the passage are people who are vehemently anti Christian and wish to disavow Christ very existence plenty of non Christian scholars have labeled it genuine. So the only explanation is that the Monks who originally copied the Manuscript for posterity were professionals who copied the work word for word as Tacitus wrote it, this for the scribes was an act of devotion that we have many examples of so much history was saved because these men and women sat for hours coping these documents by candle light many went blind doing it. We should be grateful for their sacrifice and learn from it we don't have the right or standing to question them after all what great deed have we done that compares with the saving of knowledge....

She was only remembered by the Romans. The British forgot about the mass murderer and loser within a few generations. She was not mentioned in Britain again until 1568, when Humphrey Llwyd wrote a history of Britain and used the information from Tacitus and Cassius Dio.

Isn't she only remembered because Cassius Dio's histories? Like she was completely forgotten about until the 16th century when they brought her back from his accounts to serve as a mythical figure for the British public. It isn't like she was like Joan d'Arc. She was quite literally a government propaganda project lmao.

Don’t really see what is patriotic or not about Boudicca. Different time, different group of people(at least compared to the sort of “base” English group(Germanic), major Celtic ancestry as well though, obviously the Iceni don’t really “exist” anymore) and she supposedly massacred random civilians and lost majorly. Justified rebellion to be honest, but handled very poorly.

@@Bullet-Tooth-Tony- I prefer the pithier quote when Caractacus is taken sightseeing around Rome: "With possessions such as these around us here, why covet our little huts?" It is clear that Caractacus had learned perfect Latin at an early age, as would be expected of a king who had dealings (diplomatic and trade) with the Romans before the invasion.
