Blood Matters - The Wonder Drug Is Poisoned
The new Factor VIII product was imported from the US and required the pooled blood plasma of a very large group of blood donors. But that meant that any infectious disease that a single donor carried, could immediately contaminate the whole batch.
In the second episode of her series, the broadcaster and writer Blanche Girouard speaks to a former pupil at the Lord Mayor Treloar College in Alton, Hampshire, where boys with haemophilia were regularly treated with American Factor VIII. More than 120 boys became infected with HIV and hepatitis through contaminated batches of the blood product - more than 70 have since died.

3:55 Frightening really… because in 1989-1990, having relocated from the UK to the US, I worked as a Case Manager for Bexar County MHMR (as it was then known) in San Antonio… some of my most poorest clients had to supplement their welfare income with collecting aluminium soda cans and frequently giving blood donations for $25 a time… unchecked… some gave four times a month, which also made them poorly! So it the practice was still going on even then… No doubt their donations were heat-treated, but the donees’ own bodies were weakened by giving so much blood… Thank you for sharing your stories today… (Rip Keith Proud, 1987, UK)
