Things to keep in mind if you wish to practice these techniques: Make sure when you bar or clear the opponent's weapon, that there's enough force to disrupt their wrist position a little bit. That's what buys you the time to complete the strike. If you try to clear but they're still in a good position, they won't just sit there like a compliant assistant. Also you may want to have your shield a bit more extended than I did to cover the hand a little better. But yeah, these are 3 cutting based plays, maybe next time we'll look to get some more thrust-centric ones :) If there are any other weapons you'd like to see us do a similar style video with, please let us know!

I really enjoy these technique demonstrations. In videos like this, I find it very helpful if, at the start of a sequence, a graphic or something on the fighter indicates which person is performing the technique. I often find myself halfway through a sequence realizing I should have been paying more attention to the other person.

for me It was enough that the other one did more or less nothing.

Funny enough there is a system that Thibault's book uses, where the person performing the technique is called Alexander, and the person on the receiving end is called Zachary. I was toying around with that here but at the end it just kind of made it confusing. We'll try to find some way to make it a bit clearer in the future, all suggestions welcome :)

Yeah for this episode we wanted to show how difficult it was to work around the shield, we'll definitely work around other themes in the future

Believe it or not by those plays are very similar it what we train in HMB (Battle of the Nations stuff). We just don't use the point to create a threat.

Are those swords supposed to be rapiers or cut and thrust/side swords?
@HEMASimian
@HEMASimian 6 жыл бұрын
The one I'm using is a shorter blade, so it'd be more equivalent of a side sword with a complex hilt.
@mythguard6865
@mythguard6865 6 жыл бұрын
Julian Schuetze could a rapier also be used with these types of shield? I ask because from few techniques shown here it seemed a bit more cut focused.
@HEMASimian
@HEMASimian 6 жыл бұрын
You can yeah. The Rotella is featured in some later period Rapier manuals. You can still cut with the rapier, but there'll be some more thrust centric techniques.

So I'm curious how much of this would you say is similar to dark age shield and sword combat? Or does the rapier-like sword and rounded shield change things? Do we know of anything that details a little about shield/sword combat of dark age times?
@BloodandIronHEMA
@BloodandIronHEMA 6 жыл бұрын
pandacommanda1 it would yeah. The rapier is much longer and has poorer cutting potential. If you search our video with Kyle Griswold for the I.33 sword and buckler. Small shield so it's a little different but it would give a better idea.

Were these used in the tercio, and if they were, do you have any information on how they and their weilders were employed? Thank you, and thank you for the simple demonstration.
@Changdao1644
@Changdao1644 6 жыл бұрын
Garret LeBuis They were employed mostly on the alleged antecesor of the tercio formations( the "coronelias") and on early tercios. They were stopped to be used as standard equipment for soldiers over time. In the seventeenth century they weren't used officialy anymore, although soldiers still used them as they had to buy and use their own weapons

What are the advantages of using this shield over other ones?
@BloodandIronHEMA
@BloodandIronHEMA 6 жыл бұрын
It closes off a ton of attack lines. Very difficult to hit the opponent's left side; it takes more skill to work around it.

If they try to cover low you'd cut high instead.
@KraequhoS
@KraequhoS 6 жыл бұрын
I don't get your point... fighters are not muppets, they do actual movements.. So if you try to cut them low, the shield is supposed to move down. Here, in every case, your shield is just stuck high, it's used as a weight that avoids you to think about a part of your body, it's not used like a real weapon as it should be.
@HEMASimian
@HEMASimian 6 жыл бұрын
KraequhoS these are 3 simple techniques, not a general "how to". Of course the shield can be used more actively, just not here.

Why to parry with a sword when you have shield and can strike while blocking opponents`s strike?
@HEMASimian
@HEMASimian 6 жыл бұрын
Because if they attack your right side, to block with the shield you have to cross your body with it and wouldn't be able to hit them easily because you'd be in a bad position. But yes, if they attack your shield side you could easily block and attack at the same time.
