It's a shame they cut the original boss opening, you get so desensitivized by all the "Doesn't open from this side" and "Locked" doors you come across you'd just drop your guard and then BAM, boss fight. It makes them feel so much more menacing and cunning, waiting for you to walk as far into the room as possible before showing up.

throwing frenzy projectile makes way more sense than fire imo… also their spawn animation in their first version is just so cool looking 😩

Actually the fire (through the candel) may be a nod to the "LAMPARES", chtonic nymphs that resided in the under world and served the goddess Hecates. They carried torches who could throw people into fits of madness.

Several Pthumerian enemies in the chalice dungeons use fire as a means of magical attack, considering that the shadows are of Pthumerian origin I think it makes more sense for them to use fire than to use frenzy.

I feel like these details help me understand the Shadows more, in the base game they feel so random and kind of out of place, but now they feel more directly like servants of Great Ones or even the wet nurse specifically set up to block the path to Mergo. And I guess they just got infested with snakes by accident lol

They're almost certainly the servants of Queen Yharnam. Everytime they appear, we encounter Queen Yharnam shortly after (in Moonside Lake, Mergo's Loft, and Pthumerian Ihyll). They share design similarities with the Wet Nurse, who we can also assume is a former servant of Queen Yharnam

They are basically "bodyguards" of Queen Yharnam. Always following her (like... shadows) and protecting her. "Shadows of Yharnam".

It's crazy that conceptually, I like some of these early ideas even better than what was implemented in the final product, given how perfectly crafted the game feels going through.

this is fascinating. The shadows of yharnah and that forest as a whole just feel so strange for bloodborne. They aren't tied to the beast plague, or the great ones. they seem like they'd be more at home in souls. but the shadows being some form of guardians of secrets is interesting, I'd never considered it since they just seemed so out of place and random.

I don't know about that, they still seem rather divorced from anything yharnam or cainhurst related. Them acting as guards to to berganworth would make more sense.

I mean, you find queen Yharnam in the moonside lake after you defeat Rom, who reveals the rites of the scholars and the paleblood sky. You have to remember that the scholars of Byrgenwerth, the different factions that came from it as in the school of Mensis, the choir, the healing church etc and the hunters (who are some sort of scholars too, they seek knowledge) have conducted rituals in which the insides of a corpse is studied, modified or farmed from, they seek to hold audience with a great one and to study it to find ways to evolve the human race. Great ones seek a surrogate for their children. So in a way you can conclude that all those scholars, including the group of scholars you belong to, the hunters, have defiled the bodies of said surrogates for research (as how the hunters did with the corpse of Kos in the DLC). The shadows of YHARNAM want to stop you from pursuing more knowledge to conduct a ritual, it makes sense that you find them before Byrgenwerth, in hindsight.

Back when games were designed with detailed textures and simple lighting. Nowadays its detailed lighting with comparatively simple textures, and it just doesnt works as well

@@rand0m508 It's the lighting that makes Bloodborne look so good imo, that and the animations. It might be the most atmospheric game ever made, the fishing hamlet in particular is the best looking area I've ever seen in a 3D game. There's something about the way they did the lighting, gives it a look and feel I've never seen replicated before or since.

@@yellowsaurus4895 Bloodborne has some pretty terrible level textures. Like it’s not all bad but some of it is awful. The way the body’s clip through walls in Yahar’gul. In Yharnam geometry is full of holes or aren’t visible at all. If you close up on those white weeds that stick straight up they use often. They are very jagged same with the player characters hair. The moon in the hunters dream is frayed and certain skyboxes. Like first time Yharnam look so stressed.

@@TheNwahDango Lighting in Bloodborne is not *that* good imo. Bloodborne has this issue of light leaking through buildings from the outside. You can almost never get a proper darkness. Instead you get this dark blue/gray shade inside buildings or low ground areas. And the opening shot looks cool but when the red moon is out I don’t like yahargul’s lighting. All the buildings sort of just blend together in this weird khaki color.

Maybe the AI behavior to turn invisible is less a "planned but never implemented" ability of the enemy, and more a leftover from when they ambush you for trying to open the door in the alpha (it's the same invisible thing just in reverse) either way I like from experimenting with the idea of an enemy that potentially "stalks" the player invisibly until their boss fight

They might be invisible before the player turns around, and you could potentially get in a few cheap shots if you knew beforehand. It would need to be verified if they are actually tangible while invisible, or were intended to just use it to move around.

That first opening was so neat! I think that would have been a terrific boss opener, instead of... them just already being there. I hadn't known so much was finished in the Alpha version! I thought it was a given that the alpha didn't contain the later areas?

I guess it might be because not everyone would turn around and walk directly back the way they came with the camera facing the right direction. (for example wandering around the arena) But if they warped in while using the final layout that would have been cooler. Maybe they didn't to keep it more mysterious? It also makes more sense for them to become snakes if they were already there guarding the door

I'm guessing that they thought it was too 'magical' for this part of the story. They wanted to make Rom the big climax for the change between gothic horror to eldritch horror.

​@@ThePoshboy1 There was already magic following the path to the Shadows of Yharnam, we come across several Celestial Mobs in that one area of the Forbidden Woods that straight up shoot magic at you as well as the Witches of Hemwick who can disappear, summon Mad Ones and cast paralysis. The transition between gothic and eldritch horror was hardly as sudden as flipping a switch, it was more of a gradual build up.

@@UshioKiss I think my fix gonna be to show health bars right after you tried to open the gate, but keep them hidden. So the player would spontaneously rotate the camera and piqued to explore the area, at which point showing them appear, either by magic or thru the fog.

I think the Shadows were a great boss fight in retail, and it might be due to the amount of time spent on their iterations. Despite a lot of them being just model changes, they landed in a good spot, albeit their overall impact to the story unfortunately being minimal.

I initially thought they might have been part of the school of Mensis since they appear to keep you out of Bergynwerth, and if they were human, maybe being in the Forbidden Woods would cause them to snake-ify. But Mensis wouldn't have taken their hunters with them to the Nightmare. I realized their design looks like they're servants of Mergo's Wet Nurse. It makes more sense why they would only appear in these two locations to protect Mergo and the Wet Nurse, and why they would have initially used a Messenger spell.

Laughing at the fact that the hunter at 4:20 is entirely clean, then the frenzy messengers are shown off, and then at 4:36 they are absolutely drenched in blood. This game rocks. Also, very interesting stuff, I always wanted to learn more about these guys specifically, and it turns out they're pretty neat!

I understand the snake ball boss wouldn't have worked for multiple reasons, but I'm really curious about why they decided to change the boss intro for shadows of yharnam. I would have loved to see them just appear like that after walking into the arena! It really would have messed with expectations, given we'd walk into an arena, nothing would happen, we'd see a door that said "locked" and go "oh, I guess the boss is later then" and then turn around and then BAM! boss fight!

That thumbnail really draws the eye, but it's easy to forget that Bloodborne is set post-gunpowder, and it's absolutely feasible for a Shadow of Yharnam to wield a gun. Even though we stare at guns every time we open the game, the world is so fantastical that you can forget the more mundane aspects.

They are from an ancient civilization that probably developed and ended like thousand years before the main story begins. I don't think it would fit for the queen bodyguard to already have gun. But that being said, enemies in chalice dungeon have gun and there are cannon in those too. I am not sure if Yharnam people were. who built that.

03:45 I think the scarpped this idea is because some people wouldn't know that they had to turn around to a certain spot and just teleport out or they didn't clearly understand how to implement the mechanic yet. Like how do the game know that you go to X spot after you interact with the door, will it also work if the person teleport back then go through that spot again from the first direction instead of interact with the door and go to that spot. There is a very high chance that people won't comeback for that door again for a very long time and completely miss the boss which give the key. And another thing with that is how is the X spot supposed to work? Right after interact with the door? If so then people may not turn the camera back fast enough to see the entrance or at all and got backstabbed by those. And then after they die to the shadow they just stand there again? And giving them using an ability just once and never again doesn't make much sense either. So they changed to the current approach that they just walked out of the fog.

Well as we now have seen their solution is to block all player ability to leave the area like in Elden Ring after defeating Morgot. Except since this is a surprise boss encounter, when you factor in Co-op and area fog gates I think that presents its own problem.

I think it's a similar situation to the cut Lady Maria interactions. While neat, a lot of things could go wrong and make the player miss events or get lost for too long, it was probably cut for the better. Though all of this cut content is damn cool.

Isn't that just the blunderbuss? I think all the bosses/enemy npcs in the game that use gun use that gun. Or at least gascoine, some hunter and gerhman

@@KKKuma different structure to those guns and the barrel shape is different although it's missing textures, it has a similar shape (if not the same) to the double barrel seen in Project beast footage, with a character in the "Charred Hunter" outfit reloading the gun

If we ever do get a port or remake, I hope they fix the boss fight so that their silhouettes dont glitch out in the fog when it starts. Such a cool moment kinda gets ruined by that.

The end of Mergo's Loft was so disappointing! I was actually taken aback when I realised that the particular area, and the boss were meant to be the penultimate lead up to the end of the game.

3:00 Holy shit. IS THAT A DOUBLE BARREL SHOTGUN? Man... The Alpha is would be so much harder than the retail version. The Alpha Mergo's Loft reminded me a lot of Dark Soul's 2 enemy placement design. A tight corridor filled with agile and dangerous mobs. Yeah, that would be unfun to traverse. On another note. Man, the entrance of Alpha Shadow of Yharnam is so AWESOME! Unfortunately, it seems that the alpha version of the boss fight seems overtuned. It's a gank boss fight with one of them being able to deal a one shot attack through frenzy. Remember, in this part of the game, sedatives isn't even purchasable yet since the Cosmic Eye Badge is locked until after we defeat Rom. In addition, all of them being able to upgrade their reach by phase two WOULD suck a lot. Thank god they changed their minds when they released the final version of the game. Otherwise, Shadows would become a filter zone that will cause probably half of the current fanbase of Bloodborne to quit and leave the game entirely.

Great stuff Lance. Imo, alpha intro looks cooler than retail. It's visually impressive and cohesive, and has an impact. In retail everything sorta blends together cause of the samey color scheme and it's underwhelming.

I love this so much it’s not even funny. I have one big question: Could all of this be possible for the other games? Is there Alpha stuff to be data mined? Especially DSIIIs alpha had to be insanely different. Every other boss was placed in a different arena.

I’ve always found shadows to be one of my favorite boss fights in the retail release actually. Rare do we get a double or triple boss as good as Shadows. Where Ornstein and Smough are the best duo boss, I think watchers deff are the best trio boss. There’s so many ways to tackle the fight. It’s cool.

5:30 You meant to use the word "regress" here. Ain't no way you see what we got in our version as an actual improvement. I feel robbed after seeing this. They would have been more interesting as a fight, would have added more to the atmosphere and would have been more interesting lore wise inflicting frenzy on us via dark messengers. All we got was some skinny dudes in robes summoning snakes. No teleportation, no frenzy, just generic skinny dudes with robes and snakes.

Now that I think about it. It would had made sense for the Shadows of Yharnam being able to go invisible just like the hunter when using a Blue Elixir. I don't mind that Shadows of Yharnam don't though. I like the idea that the boss appears after interacting with the door. They could had probably add more supernatural effect just before Shadow of Yharnam appears. It seems like they had issues deciding what the boss should be and how it plays out at the end of the woods.

The Shadows are already mid hard boss also with frenzied effect in the test version would made the boss 20 times harder.

perhaps their entrance was changed due to lore reasons. Invisibility is something related to gods and godlike creatures, seen only with enough knowledge. The shadows or "secret watchers" are tied to a very real place (the pthumeru civilization in the dungeons) that, besides Mergo, has no deal with invisibility. Unless they learned that skill from being in contact with the gods, like the runes in Yharnam, but nothing in the dungeons suggests that. It's a shame that their entrance after you reach the door was changed, bc it would make more impact. It would definitely introduce a new element of surprise for players that are already used to recognize a boss arena before entering it. Is there any chance of releasing a full exploration and analysis of the full alpha version, instead of small pieces? That would be a gold mine.

I could imagine if anyone took the animation of that Shadow with the rifle they could make some cool mob or boss in the Mod Overhauls for either Elden Ring or DS3

My personal theory with the shadows of yharnam is that they used the snacks to escape the Nightmare of Mensis and gaurd Beegenwerth, as the snakes have the ability to move in and out of the nightmare.

A fair deal of removed or changed content seems like it would have made the game much better. Still one of my personal favorites that I've played several times. Just a shame to see how much cooler it could have been if some aspects just remained as they were without rework or complete removals.

I'm not too concerned regarding Shadows of Yharnam since the boss fight still turned out pretty good. The big thing which was changed from alpha which I would've loved to seen fully realized was the enemy changes happening all around the game during certain phases. We still got remnants of that with Yahar'gul, but at one point it was across all areas in the game.

Elements of the earliest encounter must have been intentionally brought back for the godskin enemies. Stretching limbs and throwing dark projectiles. Even their stature reminds me of the tall thin ones. Sorta like snakeball and Rykard. I think they scaled them back to make them have fewer scattershot mechanics.

I didn't bother clicking this video because I thought a video about "Shadows of Yharnam: Dark Brigade" with a shadow with a rifle in the thumbnail was an april fools video about how actually bloodborne started development as a gritty fps

Ah fromsoft shows that as much as they love us, they hate us equally the stuff that has been dug up most of it was phenomenal and really sucks that half of it nvr fully got implemented and or was changed (the other moon presence and great one beast were pretty eerie to see)
