agreed. It just speaks to the thing Matt and Trey spoke about with the whole Isaac Hayes situation. "How can you be offended by this one thing when we have done so much to offend everybody else?"Being offended is so subjective and arbitrary. And you literally cannot watch and like south park and be offended by some episodes and not other because that just makes you a huge hypocrite.

@@splinte111 I think it caused more criticism, because it was directed at the catholics believe in saints and wonders. Rather than a generalized attack on jesus. Like Christians are used to people making fun of jesus and jesus himself even said that they shouldn’t attack someone on his behalf and that people aren’t at fault for their own disbelief in him. But the Catholic Church values saints and mother marry, because they have suffered for their faith. An ideal Christians still to this day value. And they get defensive when someone is attacking martyrs, wich can’t defend themselves and often even died because they have been attacked for their beliefs. In their head they defend fellow humans not god, who doesn’t need them defending people.

I took my Father to see South Park The Movie when it first came to Theaters... He knew NOTHING about South Park and could not BELIEVE what he was seeing. After the movie he told me that after the initial shock , he began to relax and see beyond just the jokes. I am from China and being a South Park fan for more than 10 yrs, something might surprise you is that South Park has a huge and solid fan base in China even now. Band in China did change a lot of things, we knew something really bad would happen when we first saw the title of this episode. One hour after this episode came out, everything about South Park was wiped out of Chinese internet, and we were not allowed to post anything related to South Park on social media, or our account will be directly deleted. However we all love this episode, because nobody hates censorship more than us as we are living under censorship. South Park is the best.

Dude I remember so vividly watching episodes 200 & 201 on TV when they first aired. I was only 13 in 2010, so I was SO confused what was going on with all the censorship. There was this one part at the end of 201 where Kyle goes, "You know, I learned something today" and then there just proceeds to be a minute and a half long censor beep. I literally thought my TV was broke so I turned it on on my parent's TV and it was obviously censored there too. It never aired on TV again, and I was so lucky to see it when I did.

I think the main "issue" with South Park is that you have to watch an entire episode and actually think about it to understand the point they're trying to make. it's like blatant offensiveness stacked together to create a pretty nuanced take away. but watch any clip out of context or watch an episode without critical thinking skills and you come away thinking an entirely different message is being conveyed. I've met a lot of ppl who think South Park is siding with them when they're either against them or making an entirely separate point entirely.

I feel like with the Steve Irwin bit, it was mainly a bad thing due to just how big of a figure he was in Australia. I can’t exactly remember what happened, but the day everyone found out what happened, everyone was driving slow on roads or something to that effect, it really hit the country in the gut. He represented australia as a whole, with how he would wrangle wild animals so easily while also treating them respectfully. It’s kinda hard to compare him to someone since America is kinda shitty when it comes to that with people always ending up controversial or some other bullshit, but to Australia, Steve Irwin was probably the nicest guy on earth while also being able to wrestle crocodiles. I felt noticed. I laughed, we are whiney and allergic to stuff, I get to tell soulless jokes to my friends. That improved my life. Coppercab was famous for his retort. Famous off South Park. I think the Saddest thing in SP history besides Mary Kay Bergman taking her own life was Isaac Hayes leaving the show just 2 years before his death. Then finding out later from his son Isaac was forced to quit the show by the church. So Chef got a horrible death to spite Scientology who made the decision for him when just 2 years later he could have gotten a nice sendoff tribute memorial episode that he deserved.

I gotta say something about the redhead Cartman episode, saying that it singlehandedly set off a worldwide thing. The ginger thing has been around for a very long time. As a kid with neon red hair, I got mad flak in the 80s and 90s. I went to multiple schools due to moving a lot, and it was the same at all places, so it wasn't just a one-off thing. As some form of an attempt at consolation, older people would tell me about other people they knew that were teased for having red hair. It's discussed in the book Anne of Green Gables (published in 1908), where Anne, a redhead, was teased at school for her red hair. I'm sure a plethora of examples exist for other places and times as well. I know there were jokes about teasing redheads and redheads not having souls in British comedy shows prior to this SP episode. The SP episode may have brought it to light somewhat, but it certainly didn't kick off a worldwide trend.

French philosopher Montesquieu mentions in his 1748 book The Spirit of Law that Ancient Egyptians (supposedly) killed all redheads, as a way to show the absurdity of enslaving black people (which btw is not too far from what South Park did). So yeah, it's a very old idea.

I imagine that's the exact reason why they chose red heads to target in that episode, as opposed to, say, blondes or something. Like, South Park didn't just decide to poke fun at red heads for no reason lol. It was definitely a thing long before that episode, like you said.

They are trying to stay relevant by creating controversial stories and shock humor. They use to be good, but have became so irrelevant. Southpark is the New Simpsons Family Guy when it comes to declining quality. Only people who like them now are people who think being controversial for the sake of it is being edgy, when in reality, it's just poor storytelling. It lost its sarcastic, over the top tone that made it stand out. If Southpark wasn't controversial, they simply wouldn't exist.

It’s really difficult to describe how cool South Park was when it first came on. First of all, you had to have Comedy Central and essentially no one had Comedy Central back then…so you’d have to go to a friend’s house. The show was unlike anything that came before it…not necessarily in its offensiveness but just that it rang totally true. The kids talked like we did, the situations were ridiculous and the entire adult cast was almost impossibly stupid. For 13 year old me, it was a *total* revelation. I don’t remember the controversy of its early existence so much as it feeling truly countercultural and hip.

I always thought the Steve Irwin bit was a great way to poke fun at how people pretend to be sad when a celebrity dies. Satan confronts Steve Irwin saying he thinks his outfit is offensive because Irwin just died. After Steve explains he's the real Steve Irwin, Satan tells him he has to leave because it's a costume party lol. I vaguely remember people judging the way the Irwin handled animals and many comedians made fun of him for it. So to see people flip to his side entirely after his death was weird. I wonder if Matt and Trey had this in mind or if I'm just reading too much into it. Regardless I think the joke is more relevant today with it feeling like celebrities die more often.
