Season one is a weird fiction masterpiece. I’m a fan of southern gothic fiction and cosmic horror, and this seemingly simple tale about a murder pays homage to these genres flawlessly.

Rust is just phenomenal. He's such a flawed character, but he doesn't shy away from those defiencies. It allows him to get in the mind of the perpretrator. Every time I see clips from the first season of TD it makes me respect Matthew McConahey's acting. He really gets into the psyche of his characters. Which would send us mere mortals ape shit.

You need to understand that the first season of this show was such a movement. The night of the finale I had a literal string board with clues solving the mystery of this show. It was largely incorrect and my theories ignored, but that is neither here nor there.

I remember seeing the trailer and being stunned that two legit movie actors were doing a TV series. I think it really paved the way for other a-list actors to do the same.

I enjoyed all 3 seasons. I personally loved season 2. Season 1 just started with such a high bar people always compare it against that. I recommend watching all 3

Yes!! No matter how many times I watch this, I immediately get fully invested every single time. Such great characters. Mary, if you like this you would also enjoy the HBO series, "The Wire." It was called "Sur Ecoute" (I think) in France. It's even older but also has really interesting and flawed characters.

Last year BBC polled 206 TV critics in 43 countries on the best TV series of the 21st century. "The Wire" was number 1.

The scene where Mathew macconaughy asks the guy to get him some beer during the Interview because it's Thursday is probably the best acted scene I've ever seen in a tv show. Period. You can see it in his eyes and body language that if he doesn't get his beer soon he's going to raise some hell. He should have got a golden globe or academy for this role.

The first episode is one of the best series pilots of any show I've ever watched. It does such a good job of hooking the viewer. It's very well acted, there's layers and layers of tension and mystery, and then the reveal at the end just creates so many more questions.

This series came out at a time when my world view and philosophy on life were changing and really coming into focus. What I thought about the world, politics, god, the afterlife. Whoever wrote the words for Rust’s character was so right on with how I was thinking and feeling I was just hooked. Every time I watch this series I am mesmerized by that character.

Marty flexes his masculinity as his greatest strength but the women around him really want his vulnerability. Which Marty hides from them at all costs. Such a deep character introspective for the male psyche in a hyper male environment.

Rust is really smart getting them to give him beer. Anything he says can`t be used against him because you can`t be interviewed under the influence. If you are they can`t use anything that you said in court at least.

Another series from HBO that would be up your street is The Wire. It's a five season show that deals with cops and criminals in the city of Baltimore, which shows both sides of the medallion quite well. Its one of the best shows HBO has ever made.

HBO presented 3 of the best dramatic series ever: Band of Brothers, TheSopranos and True Detective (especially Season 1.) As to McConaughey and Harrelson, I’ve never seen two actors together put on a performance like theirs ever.

Hey Marijke, You ask about the psyche of Marty when Rust confronts him about his extramarital activities. I think Marty is one of those people who love to judge but does not like to be judged for his miscreants. At the point when Rust was confronting him, he was pretending to be the perfect husband, the perfect family man. For Rust to call him out on it was an affront to his manhood, since he sees being the male protector for the women he is around, even though he ignores the main need for communication and interaction that most women desire. Later this plays out as he confronts his wife, his mistress, and even his daughters.

The first season was born from a lot of conflict between the showrunner Nic Pizza, and the Director Fukinaga. The director changed a lot, making it a more visual story. Nic is a novelist and the 2nd season shows what his writing is more like. It's drawn out and a lil dull, a whole lot of dialogue. The first season is a true gem, cuz the 2nd season is such a sharp drop in quality. I never saw the third season but i heard good things.

Each season of this show has another story going on besides the actual crimes and investigations. It involves the personal troubles of the detectives.There is also a theme of late 19th/early 20th century gothic/cosmic horror in it, which was done to perfection. Are there other forces at work from beyond?

This was such an out of nowhere hit, at least for me. Very little buildup but as soon as it was on TV my brother and I were hooked. Season 2 isn't quite as good, felt like there were too many characters but it was still very well acted, and I haven't seen season 3 yet. This first season though, holy crap. Gonna be quite a wild ride Mary

There is a show on Amazon Prime called Reacher (based on a book series) which is also crime based and very good. Not to be confused with the two movies that were made with Tom Cruise, which are called "Jack Reacher" and "Jack Reacher: Never Go Back" of which I've only seen the first one, which wasn't bad per se, but the series is soooooo much better.

Thanks for the tip ! My favorite series so far on AP is “ A French Village” (if you don’t mind sub-titles.) A deep dive into the French Resistance during Nazi occupation with a level of genius similar to BB, where you’re gripped and astonished every episode.

Have you watched all the Scandinavian noire crime stuff? There were some really good Danish and Swedish crime dramas. BBC even made a few, set in the nordic countries, since they were such a rage at one point.

Funny how Rust, the guy you think is so weird, is like half the people I know; he just seems normal. To me it's Marty who seems weird and alien. Of course most of my friends are either philosophy professors or anarchists, so there's that. Incidentally, I wonder whether it's a play on words that the guy named Rust says he never sleeps. Since "Rust Never Sleeps" is both a popular saying and the title of a Neil Young album.

The aesthetics of this show are great. I specifically like the difference between the detectives office in 1995 compared to 2015. Opaque and drab walls compared with glass panelling and lots of light. I think it's an allegory to the lack of transparency and accountability of cops in that time, and the conformity of the time. In the present, the cops are re-examining the case and the cops themselves are being pulled up on their account of what happened. The modern cops aren't the macho types from 1995 either and the scenery reflects that.

25:28 Yes, but also tv dramas have a habit of showing some of the worst possible scenarios in the families of the protagonists, because it makes for juicier dynamics than if they were just normal and happy.

I think Marty is so pissed off that Rust knows about the affair because his ego is so out of control. Marty thinks he’s the smartest guy in the room and then Rust takes one look at him and figures him out like that 🫰. Marty is overconfident and cocky. I’m not gonna say anything else but yeah, season 1 of this show is legendary in the tv world for a reason. I’m so glad you’re watching this!
