Let's talk about what to do & what to look for when you have boost or turbo problems. I also reveal what that sound was on track day... a blown turbo. Turbos can fail in several ways, but regardless of how it fails, there are certain thing we can do to possibly reduce collateral damage. Watch as I experience, inspect, and figure out how to get my car back on the road. There is a follow-up video (Below this sentence) going over the details of how to replace a turbo on a Subaru EJ257.

TD05 Blouch 16G turbo blew up today, pulled over immediately, however the engine idled for 5 minutes or so to listen for any rattling (none). (Engine was running fine, nothing out of ordinary). Exhaust started smoking so I turned it off. Got it towed. I removed the turbo to find the intake side shredded to bits. And the wall of the turbo inlet was bent out. I removed all intake parts and most pieces were stopped by the Grimmspeed Intercooler. Removed the manifold and didn’t find much metal, maybe one small spec. I did a compression test and each cylinder is 160+. Drained the oil and found a few bits of crumb size metal pieces plus a very fine metallic sheen. Going to remove the oil pan and give it a clean. This engine has under 100k miles. And the turbo had under 500 miles (blouch warranty will cover it I hope) Considering the good compression and the engine been idling fine do you think after a few oil flushes I should be alright? Thanks!

Sorry to hear that, hopefully it will get covered. The only way to be certain when it comes to metal in the oil is an engine rebuild. That being said it's a judgment call by the owner "do I roll the dice and do a couple oil changes or take everything apart?". From my experience, the decision to change the oil or build the engine is also a question of time and finances; If you have another vehicle that helps too. I can't tell you what's best for you. If I was Oprah I might be able to send you an fully built engine lol. At 100k miles I would change the oil and "send it" bc if it keeps going it's a win, if it fails, you still got some decent mileage out of it and now you can build the engine how you want (that's a win too imo). I hope it works out for you. Feel free to contact me with updates and/or questions.

@@RyKingUploads I made the dumb mistake of putting a oil treatment additive that blew the bearings on my TD04. 🥴🤦🏽‍♂️ I did it to myself (Restore: engine restorer & lubricant 4cyl) Ran fine for about an hour. That’s when i lost boost completely and it blew. Luckily I have AAA gold and found an original IHI VF52 with 23,xxx miles off a rear ended WRX for $350 on eBay

Thanks for the video. Do you have any suggestions for checks that I could do on a possible project car purchase before buying? it is an 04 Forester XT with a "Blown Turbo" are there some test that i could do without tearing into a strangers car to determine if this is going to be an entire engine rebuild or just a turbo replacement?
@RyKingUploads
@RyKingUploads 2 жыл бұрын
That's a good question. Check the oil on the dipstick. Look at it closely in good light and move it to change the angle. Look for sparkles (like glitter) from metal flakes. If you see metal, you know the engine could be damaged. Check the coolant colors, consistency, and debris. Check the tail pipe to see if it looks moist or wet from oil. Sometimes you can wiggle a socket and wrench onto the crank bolt without removing anything. If you can, rotate the engine by hand to see how smooth it is. Any roughness or noise during rotation could be a deeper issue. There may be resistance due to compression, but it shouldn't feel like something is grinding or stopping rotation. Since the seller admits there is a problem with the vehicle, you can use that as bargaining leverage because the engine could be damaged. If I were looking to buy that vehicle, I would set a price that reflects the engine needs significant repairs. I hope this helps and thanks for watching.

Can you still drive with turbo failure? And can you turbo failure without throwing a CEL light? I have some weird sound from my 2019 Sti, sound slike rattling sounds when Im accelerating. Sound like metal bouncing around a hamster wheel. The sound is only there when im on throttle, whether on or not in boost. I still can make boost though, just feels sluggish. Car is bone stock except for a tomei catback. I initially though it was just some rattling on the exhaust.
@RyKingUploads
@RyKingUploads 2 жыл бұрын
You can def have a turbo failure without the cel coming on. A rattling sound can be many things but if there is a drop in performance it's possible that there is an issue with the turbo or the catalytic converter. I would take it to a shop asap if you're not comfortable with diagnosing issues. Driving a car that's not running right will cause more issues than it's worth. I hope it's something minor. Lmk what you find.

Great video! Thanks for the share. We have an old Golf 4 TDI, the turbo suddenly died one day, and when we opened we found that the compressor had a lot of play, some parts broke and there’s a lot of scratches everywhere in the casing (we’ve done a borescope and saw something between the piston and the cylinder). She has 400 000 km (like 250 000 mi) and we’re not sure if rebuilding the entire engine is the best option, or just open and clean… can I have your opinion? Thanks
@RyKingUploads
@RyKingUploads 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks for watching. Diesel engines in general have pretty tough internals. Once the head is off you'll be able to see the cylinder wall damage better and make a judgment call. You may be able to open and clean out the debris and put it back together. I'm not familiar with VW diesels, so my opinion doesn't have much value though 😂.
