Chris Smith Absolutely, unless you were around during that time it was it hard to describe he was so different, muscular, no socks , black shorts most times waring a pancho , super quick, highly skilful and could spark you with either hand. When you hit thar alarm clock espically in the UK 🇬🇧 knowing most of the time it was back to bed straigh away. Pure talent and in my view wasted gexwas like a shooting star. I wish he had the discipline of some of the other fighters like a Holyfield and Lewis etc. Personally I think Holyfield had Mike's number and would beat him 8 out 10 times. Great memories early on I think he was shown on ITV then sky. So decline though amd hard to watch at the end .

Good assessment. You're right, so many people think Tyson was just a big puncher. Sure, he could punch like a truck but he himself said his best quality was his elusiveness. In his prime he was impossible to hit cleanly and that meant he could do pretty much what he wanted to you. His defence was severely underrated too, check him duck Tillis' punches,like five of them,Mike almost touches the floor he ducks so low. Also against Mitch Green, he stood right in front of him, goading him with his hands by his side, and green could not land a shot on him. He was one of a kind. We will never see another one like him. I hope we do, because boxing needs a devastating young heavyweight to take over.

Nope. Mike tired around round 7 or 8. Ali and Frazier. didn't and also fought in the Era of 15 round matches. Only a casual boxing fan would say that.

Prior to that he was untouchable and would have knocked out Holyfield and Lewis at the same time.

Absolutely spot on mate, I was 11 years old when Mike Tyson won the Heavyweight World Championship at 20. Around that time I have never known such a buzz leading up to fights when Tyson was involved and it has never ever been matched by anyone. The man was so ferocious and scary too :) and the aura around him was almost non-human. I can remember sneaking out of my bedroom window to go and watch Tyson fight because I lived in a little Town 30 miles outside of London, UK and his fights were usually 4am for us. That was his reach, a little Town in England and all us kids could do was talk about Mike Tyson. Brilliant memories that will always bring a smile to my face.

His out-of-ring behavior got him stereotyped, and not necessarily unjustly. But in the ring, he was a scientist. Everything about his style is a product of calculation. He moves unlike any other boxer. Whether that's _better_ or not is a debatable matter but the guy was not winging it in there. It's not false bravado when he says he knew exactly where the punches would go and that he was dead accurate.

You are assuming an awful lot. Tyson at the end of the day lost all his potential career defining fights. A lot of fighters look devastating on the way up when being fed cannon fodder. I am not suggesting Jesse Ferguson was cannon fodder at this stage of his career but nevertheless Tyson fought across three decades and his best wins were against a dragged out of retirement Larry Holmes aged nearly 40 yoa and a blown up LH in Michael Spinks. He then spent the 1990s avoiding most of the up and coming top contenders. He was only 24 yoa when he was beaten up by Buster Douglas and was beaten twice by Holyfield and by Lennox Lewis. Tyson spent the 1990s ducking Lewis until he needed a pay day. No-one was saying Tyson was past his prime when he fought Holyfield. In fact Tyson was favourite to win the first fight. Once Tyson was "found out" then the myth of the Tyson "past his prime" nonsense was retrospectively applied. When Tyson eventually fought Lewis the fight was regarded as a 50:50 in the US even though Lewis was always going to be too big and too talented for Tyson at pretty much any stage of the 1990s. Bowe and Vitali would also have been too big for Tyson and then fighters like Mercer, Tua, Morrison, McCall et al would have given him a run for his money if Tyson had not been so protected by his management.

This unfortunately carried on through the rest of his career. A prime clean Tyson would have beaten a lot of the names you mentioned. Lewis even admitted to it during an interview.

@@struesbob7493 I think Lewis is being gracious although Lewis, despite being older than Tyson, took the Olympics route so did not turn professional until approaching three years after Tyson had won a world title. Lewis would not have been up to speed as a professional relative to Tyson until the 1990s. It does not matter how Tyson's life spiralled into chaos. The fact remains that he has no stellar wins on his win record so it is but conjecture how he would have coped with the like of Holyfield and Lewis had be stayed on the straight and narrow. Coulda shoulda woulda counts for nothing and at the end of the day any young half decent prospect can look good knocking over tomato cans and relics from the 1970s.
