I can relate to Mizu (I'm Biracial), Swordfather and Ringo (I'm disabled, mild Cerebral Palsy) in a way. Beautiful animation, great dialogue, strong characters, amazing fight scenes and strongly historically researched. This rekindled my love for anime (eventhough this show was produced by a French animation studio so not a true anime). Thank you Netflix, we need more shows like this. Best show of 2023. Can't wait for season 2! 🔥🔥🔥

The cliffside talk they have is one of the finest mentor soothings I’ve seen in such a looong time Stick mentoring Matt Murdock just kinda commits to “I’m a dick; you need to be a grizzled motherfuqqer”; whereas Swordfather uses metaphors, but cuts to the quick to make sure Mizu understands the point … he’s not some inscrutable Yoda stacked with such insurmountable wisdom the mentee can only understand aphorisms; he cares more about Mizu than the immediate installation of wisdom into his student

@hellfish2309 The continuity and flow of great story telling, grounded believability and character development. It was lost after ep 6 and continued in 8. Everything in 6 was an unbelievable fantasy power trip. Hallucinating doesn't give you strength to scale a castle wall with a full grown man of deadweight then proceeding to toss him through the Irishmans window. Secondly, 8 wasn't bad up until the end when Blue eyes constantly gets bested by Irishman and he proceeds to....run away? He could have killed her 10 times over and instead kept running? As she confidently trailed him only to lose once more. Was I supposed to be wowed or impressed by this? It was so cringe, like wtf.

Episode 5 where we see that she was once happily married really adds layers to her character, showing that she's capable of setting revenge to the side and finding happiness despite being treated like an animal by most of the people she meets. It also further emphasizes her need for revenge because her marriage fell apart partially because she isn't pure Japanese.

Not to mention the villain! Man, what a disgusting yet charismatic villain voiced beautifully by Kenneth Branagh. He is absolutely a force to be reckoned with in this series and is a man who will get what he wants no matter how much blood he spills and how much innocence he violates. My one and only issue with the show is that Mizu’s battle injuries hardly have an effect on her. I appreciate having a lead who makes mistakes and gets hit, but there are many times in the show where she should either be crippled or half dead but you don’t see it effect her fighting or movement much, to the point where you stop being bothered by her taking damage at all. Episode 6 where she’s fighting through the castles’ defences is where they really stretched that. Her leg getting impaled did not affect her footwork one bit. In a vengence story like this its very easy for the showrunners to end up makeing repetetive episodes of fighting again and again, but how the episodes are written with many if not all of them having a new way of approaching the story kept it very fresh for mer. Like the theatre episode where they kept crosscutting between her orgin story and the tale of the wife, Ronin and Onyuru. Or the castle infiltration episode where we see the bad guys reacting to her every move avlong the way with their "periscope", both are very diffirent and unique ways of keeping and old theme feeling new and exciting.

There's some "making of" content for Blue Eye Samurai, and yes, they did do motion capture and filming actors to get movements accurate. They also worked using real-world physics. For that I would say that Blue Eye Samurai is animation, not anime. The characters are fantastic; well-rounded with strengths, flaws, motivations, and growth. I'm looking forward to season 2.

There's been a few traditional anime that has used those same techniques

Your idea of anime is too narrow. Not really making fun of your comment or anything, just saying. Either way, it's not anime proper. I think there's nothing more experimental than Japanese anime, when it comes to animation, even if most mainstream shows play it safe, every year there will be gems trying their hand at different ways to move forward in the field, and the results are just as astounding.
@Peasham3 ай бұрын
@@jmacostaEh, nah, the most popular anime shows each year are usually extremely safe when it comes to animation.

I gave it a 9.5/10 when it came out mostly due to my binge fest 😂 Now, over two months laters, I give it a 9-9.5 /10 after the hype - relatively the same. IMO, it really satisfied me with the vibes of an old school Samurai Western flick given a modern twist with impeccable detail to the choreography and quality of animation. It did a revenge story very well - like masterfully. It was understandable because it made sense - It was like watching a hunt for truth mixed with Assassin vibes, where finding out clues and leads towards finding out the true identity of the target / person responsible for Mizu’s life. Mizu as a protagonist/character is seen as sort of an Anti-hero. The wider cast really helps us to see the bad/good consequences of Mizu’s conscience decisions that she is constantly battling with inside and/or trying to bury deep in her heart. It gave me something I wasn’t looking for and left me interested in seeing more. I will agree that the first season’s finale was a bit unfulfilling (no spoilers) but I’m hoping Mizu’s journey in s2 doesn’t step away from writing style/direction s1 did very well.

i was immediately drawn to the biracial identity crisis. as some one who is mixed race i identified with mizu tremendously. but i would really love to see taigen and mizu’s relationship turn into something more because it had definitely hinted at that.

Show is kinda mid. Power scaling is totally off on the main character and the story telling is just like any other decent anime thats out there. The art style makes damn near every character thats not fat look the same. I enjoyed the history of Japan though

Fun fact: The creators of BES are a married couple. The position of their names in the opening credits switches from episode to episode so they are each first place an equal number of times.

It was so good. You know it's a good story when you have trouble picking your favorite anything- favorite character, favorite scene, favorite line, etc. Everything was so good that I can't possibly pick a favorite anything. It's one of those things that makes you fall in love with storytelling again.
