In this video I compare Blue Fountain Pen inks that I have in my collection.
Inks in this comparison:-
- Waterman Inspired Blue
- Rohrer and Klingner Blu Mare
- Waterman Florida/Serenity Blue
- Robert Oster Fire an Ice
- Robert Oster Bondi Blue
- Visconti Blue
- Diamine Aqua Blue
- Lamy Turquoise
- Organics Studio Nitrogen
The pen used in this ink comparison is the William Shakour Titan Dip Pen, it’s a pen made by a UK Pen Collector William Shakour. I have a review of several of William's Titan pens including the full size and dip pens along with other accessories. You can see them on this playlist • William Shakour

Great video comparisons. The only ink I've ever truly regretted buying is the Organics Studio Nitrogen. The forever smudging is a pain, and sticky is a good word choice to describe it. Though I have had pretty decent behavior from the ink on both the Tomoe River Paper and Life Bank Note Paper, dependant on the humidity. I think Diamine's Happy Holidays , and Skull and Roses a close match colorwise, with the Skull and Roses having more sheen, but not as much as the Organics Studio Nitrogen.

Nice video. I'm going to try some Robert Oster inks they look like fun colors. I've only tried one color from Organic Studios, Walden. Lots of sheen, incredible really. It smudges forever though. I have DIamine Inkvent Skull and Roses and looks like a bit less sheen version of nitrogen,

When I saw another blue comparison, my immediate thought was, “Yea! I love blue inks!”, then my next thought was, “Boo, I’m going to want to buy more blue inks.” Luckily I have owned or seen all of these already. R&K Blu mare is a fabulous shading ink in almost any-sized nib and is my favorite light, light-blue. Waterman Florida/Serenity was my late mother’s go to, so I have a huge place in my heart for it. And OMG, Nitrogen! - an ink that truly giveth and taketh away. I have used N in a planner with TR paper and six-months later, the pages still stick together. Same thing with Thoreau (Walden Pond), but Emerson doesn’t seem to be as sticky as the other two. If you had to choose only 1 of RO’s light-blue inks, which would you choose? I use Blue Water Ice a lot, is it worth getting a bottle of another color? (Asking for a friend, who doesn’t already have too-much blue ink.😉)

For me the one Robert Oster it has to be Australian Sky Blue, followed by Blue Water Ice.

Inspired blue is underrated and the cost is low. I use it a lot. If you use a fine or extra fine nib, you don’t get better performance from more expensive inks.

Great review. I am a big fan of blue inks and highly appreciate your videos on inks. Still looking for the perfect blue and tried quite few between blue-turquoise and mid range blue. Few other blues to try: Leonardo blue turquoise, Noodler’s Blue, Diamine Florida Blue and Mediterranean Blue, Noodler’sNavajo Turquoise. Please continue.

I like your comparison's but I really wonder why you double paint the swab. That is really not a normal use case. Mostly when I write, I only write each stroke only once. So I don't know what to do with the swabs you lay down twice. That is just not anything I do. Best to stop with the first pass, I think.

I always like these ink comparisons. It also shows me how much my own taste has changed. A few years ago, I was going for the absolute most saturated and extreme colors, and something like sheen was important to me. Nowadays, I look much more for shading and get really unsaturated inks. Out of this set, I think I like Blu Mare the best, although overall, Waterman Mysterious Blue is my favorite blue. With regards to Fire & Ice, I've heard about sample variation in Robert Oster inks before, maybe you have a poor sample? Did you ever open / try the second bottle?

Great video Dave. I love your comparison videos. If you get a chance, have a look at Diamine Sargasso Sea. It is the most saturated ink I have ever used. More saturated than even Diamine Oxblood. The blue comes out a delicious thick, dark colour. Actually, now that I'm talking about it, I should queue it in my next ink rotation.

Fountain pens give the user so much freedom when it comes to the line width, rhe wetness, how you hold it, how often you have to replace the ink, what ink you use, obviously the variation in your own handwriting, ... What else gives the user so much freedom!?

I have several bottles of Robert Oster inks, and they've been disappointing. Mine never seem as pretty or interesting as the marketing would indicate. Waterman inks are underrated imo. I only got my first about a year ago, Serenity Blue. It's a bit like a French blue to my eyes and I like it. My next purchase will probably be Waterman Mysterious Blue. I also like Diamine inks in general and I have quite a few.

That's the issue I seem to have had with the Fire and Ice. I have about half a dozen RO inks and most are nice but the sheen seen elsewhere on swatches I haven't really seen.

You’d try RO fire & ice in one of your Scribo’s. I just put it my Scribo Feel Mediterraneo with 14 Kt Fine and it shows a nice amount of sheen (on TR). I don’t like very sheeny inks, but this is a beautiful and subtle magenta sheen. Another blue: Leonardo Blue was a very pleasant surprise to me!
@PenultimateDave
@PenultimateDave 3 жыл бұрын
I haven't tried in my Scribo yet but I did a trial by dumping an entire 1ml of Robert Oster onto Tomoe River and let it dry for 2 days and still hardly any sheen, so I think it's the formula that was used on my two bottles were less sheeny.

Nice work review. May I suggest, you let us see how does it looks the other side of the paper? Such aspect is important too in many cases. Thanks
@PenultimateDave
@PenultimateDave 3 жыл бұрын
Hi Joan, so as I'm using Tomoe River none of the inks will bleed through to the other side, because I'm using 52gsm there will always be some ghosting. Unfortunately paper properties will differ widely so some inks may bleed or ghost through to the other side on some papers but not on others, so it's impossible to really show unless I did ink swatches on multiple paper types.

Another superb Blue ink video. Although I wish I’d seen it before receiving my Kon-Peki! 😆 I may have been tempted to get the Waterman instead. Oh come on, who do I think I’m kidding? 😳 I’ve wanted Kon-Peki for a long long time. The first ink I ever used was Waterman Florida Blue. Fantastic colour of ink, really is. I don’t know why I think the Iroshizuku inks are better as the prices are shocking, whereas the Waterman is so cheap. I’m mad to pay Pilot’s prices really in the UK.
@PenultimateDave
@PenultimateDave 3 жыл бұрын
I was the same way when getting Kon-Peki as it was an ink that was on my to buy list for a very long time. A couple of years later I decided to buy Waterman Inspired Blue. I think Waterman Florida Blue and Intense Black were the first inks I bought. I'm the same way about Pilot Iroshizuku ink prices, a few years ago US dropped their prices to like $18 a bottle and in UK and EU we still haven't dropped the prices for some reason. So when I go to pick up an Iroshizuku bottle it needs to mostly be either one to refill a previous bottle, or it must be a colour I absolutely must have, or I have to get them at 10-15% off in the sale. It's the same reason why I don't own any Graf von Faber Castell inks and Colorverse, I just see these inks being way too expensive for the amount of ink you receive.

@@PenultimateDave - you’ll already be aware I’m sure, but keep an eye out for the 20% discounts from La Couronne Du Comte as that’s where my latest pen and inks are from. With 20% and free EU shipping, it wipes the floor with UK prices. BUT their website is not linked to stock counts so be wary of that. My latest order has been 5 weeks and I am still waiting on Tsuki-yo! Thanks for replying 😀

Nitrogen is awesome. Just imagine a medieval monk using it for text and illumination. Now on my wish list along with gloves, protective paint overalls, face shield, protective sheets etc. Oh, hang on, I have all that to protect me from the virus. 😂. You have some stonking inks. Where are the Krishnas, Coloverse, Private Reserve inks? London October pen show soon. Then Sheffield pen show in November. Hopefully Sarj, St.John's pens, Worcester Pen Company et al will be there.
@PenultimateDave
@PenultimateDave 3 жыл бұрын
Sadly I don't have any Krishna, Colorverse or Private Reserve. The Private Reserve Inks are very few in the UK unfortunately, not a great selection and now the owner passed away last week I doubt they will continue unless someone comes along and buys up the company a second time. Krishna I've stayed away from because I have a few friends and Krishna inks have stained their expensive Viscontni's. I like the look of some of the Colorverse inks but I feel for the price, and that small bottle you get as a second bottle, a bit over priced and I could never fit a no 6 size nib into that bottle. Unfortunately London and Sheffield pen shows are now cancelled. The next pen show will be Bristol in Feb 2021 and London in Mar 2021 but only if we can reduce the spread of virus infection. Yesterday was our highest day of infections with over 6,000 new infections. No pen shows until we can get that down to 500.
