Blue Microphones Spark: Low-Cost Condenser Mic Demo'd, True Value Assayed (Video)

I got some guff for calling the $300 Audix CX-112 an "entry-level" mic, but surely no-one will take exception with me saying the same about the Blue Spark. This large-diaphragm condenser streets for only $199, yet still provides a hint of that big-studio sound and designer styling for which Blue is best known.
The Blue Spark also features a unique "focus" control which, when engaged, alters the dynamic and frequency response of the mic element. I pointed the Spark at a number of different sources and played around with that focus control to see what kind of results I could get.

Oh, you're right.. That looks more like the one from the Blue "Baby Bottle" mic. Had to go take a look at my Spark really fast.

@johneeeee Plus my cabinet is a Marshall, have had it since I was like 14. You almost made me want to return the mic for like calling me a beginer or something. I have played music over 30 years, since I was a tot. Nice music by the way!

Sick. Good review. I would definitely like it to be uploaded in HD next time through though. KZfaq compresses the heck out of the audio, so it doesn't really do justice to your detailed insights, until you can watch it in 720p or higher..

Have to agree with you Owen. Over all this mic sounds excellent and is very affordable. The shock mount, elbow joint and pop filter aren't great but the quality of the mic more than makes up for these inconveniences. Thanks for the review.

Welp, I rap I have been using Blue Snowball it did the job served its purpose as I was learning and was a beginner in recording. Today I discovered the Blue Spark and I watched numerous videos and read many reviews on the 'Spark' So I decided to purchase the mic I hope I love it as much as everyone else does!

not Knowing your convertors and so on I am surprised by this ''entry-level'' offering. And found it a hole lot 414ish And as you know it is 4 x $. Just a first impression and that is what it is. Markyroson Cheapest "professsional recording" microphone (in the blue series). The snowball is definitely not a pro mic, and the snowball is way less than half the price of the Blue Spark. Unless some people are overcharging for it.

I'd disagree with that. Your mic and mic placement should have more to do with your sound than how you decide to EQ it after the fact. If you're only using the Spark, experiment with different distances from the source and the focus button on and off. See what sounds best that way rather than trying to "fix it" later with EQ. The best recordings I've ever dealt with sounded killer without any EQ or what not because time was spent to make sure they sounded good from the beginning :)

Why do you assume that people using this mic will have shitty little amps or something? I just got this mic and I have a giant 8 speaker vintage 1977 refurbished cabinet that is really nice.

MXL V67G sounds much better than the Spark for half the price. Still not amazing or anything, but I definitely prefer it.

Guys one question by a noobie : Blue Spark bundle + GRANITE MP-480-5M Μicrophone Cable + Prodipe Professional Mic Stand + Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 = a complete recording setup ??? Did i miss sth ? Is this a valid combination ?

I would recommend a preamp for the focusrite (If you dont want to buy another interface) because its not cool to have an interface which costs the same as the microphone. You would have a bottleneck

The shockmount is the one that came with the spark when it was first released, but now the spark comes with a "worse" shockmount. One that isn't a spider shockmount. So does the Spark digital. You can buy the "Blue S3 Shock" which is a spider shockmount, and is way better than the one you get with the spark today. It holds both the spark, and the spark digital.

Lightfoot I would recommend getting the spark and the "S3 shockmount". It looks much better and reduces shock alot more. The stand I use is a cheap $19 desk boom thingy I found on ebay, but if you want something really good, get the RØDE PSA 1. Glad to help. :)
