Hi Mike, at 9:15 one suggestion that I use is to replace one of the bolts from your license plate with an eye bolt. Then connect your emergency cable to the eyebolt.

For the break-away lanyard: I drilled a 1/4” hole through a bottom license plate hole, through the bumper, and installed a stainless steel eye bolt, with washers and lock nut. Now I can easily hook up the little orange lanyard to the VEHICLE, not the hitch assembly. Easy Peasy.

Nice video you guys, so you've extended your hitch on the "A" I'd say go ahead and extend the electrical cable ( get longer) and get a safety cable. Next thing is you said you put the Jeep in neutral. Hopefully you're putting the transfer case in neutral if the Jeep is automatic transmission.

Very good video! As was referenced in other comments, where you connected the breakaway cable to your Motorhome is just fine. You connected it to the hitch frame not to the hitch receiver assembly. The hitch frame is either bolted or welded to your Motorhome chassis. It’s not likely to come loose. If something were to fail it would be the pin that holds the receiver into the tube or something connected to the receiver. Even if all of that assembly was pulled away, the breakaway cable is “upstream” of all that fastened to the hitch frame and would stay in place allowing the breakaway cable to pull out of the Jeep baseplate and apply the brakes. You are good to go as you are in my opinion. Thanks for your efforts!

I have used the Blue Ox for a couple of years and really like it. I do have problems with the lights on my Jeep not always working and I have to fiddle around a bit .One word of caution that you probable should have mentioned is that it is almost impossible to back up more than a couple of inches with the vehicle attached as the follow vehicle will not back in a straight line and will jacknife. This is from the voice of experienec and the end result was costly to me with damage to both vehicles and a bent arm to the Blue Ox tow system making it worthless and I had to buy a new unit. Incidentally, on that particular trip, I connected and disconnected the tow bar 8 times for different reasons.

One advantage of having the car-trailer combo is dropping the TT and the car is free to use. So except for the extra step of hooking up the WDH it's a much simpler process. It is good information for the undoctrinated, as usual. Keep the rubber side down

Here's a few more tips, For the breakaway tether on the coach side, I used a 900 lbs pull strength cable with eyelets that attaches to the chassis frame on the coach and that right under the hitch. Also I recommend using hitch stabilizers on the hitch to the drop receiver and one on the drop receiver to the tow bar, this eliminates any movement and chucking that occurs when traveling.

We will have the Blue Ox installed this coming year. Great video thanks for the review I now have an idea what to expect. One thing I noticed is that you stood between the RV and the Jeep as she was pulling up to the RV. Not sure if someone in the comments have said anything, but that is not a good practice. I have hauled horse trailers and flatbed trailers and things can go wrong.. brakes fail or drivers hit the wrong pedal, either way not a good outcome. Enjoying your videos and again thanks for the review of the Blue Ox. I am looking forward to being able to bring our toad with us.

Great video… pretty much confirmed going with the blue ox. Not sure if it’s different for the JL vs JK wrangler but if you put transfer case in neutral instead of transmission (keep it in park), you can keep the keys with you instead of the Jeep… and it’s the recommended flat towing method in accordance with the manual is what I was told.

Tip: Install rubber mud flaps on the back of the RV to prevent rocks from hitting the Jeep. Tip: instead of pushing the jeep back to lock the bar, simply connect the bar then tell your wife to back up to lock the bar. Then connect your cables. TIP: connecting and disconnecting does take some planning. I don't recommend your brake system, as it adds another step to the process that's a hassle if you're disconnecting every time you camp. The RoadMaster Invisibrake costs more, but it's so much easier since you don't have to install and remove the brake system each time, and store it somewhere. Too much hassle IMO. TIP: Do not buy the 10,000 lb tow bar! Everything is heavier and bulkier, harder to use, not to mention it's more expensive. The 6000lb Alpha is fine for the Jeep. You should NOT be towing anything heavier than 6000lbs with a gas RV motor. If you've got a DP, that's another story, if your pulling a pickup, or something over 6000lbs, but I bet you never will. It's really best to tow a small car to lighten the load and make it easy to maneuver around parking lots, and campsites, plus being easy to park in front of the RV in your campsite.
@RVBlogger
@RVBlogger Жыл бұрын
Hi Tom, Thanks for all the great tips! I don't agree about backing up the Jeep to lock the tow bar because if you're not careful you could damage the tow bar or the baseplate. Definitely appreciate the feedback! Mike

Hi Debbie, Hmmm...this is a really great point. Susan and I are stumped...maybe a mirror on the back corner of your tow vehicle to see the lights and you could use a rear back up camera to watch the second arm click into place. Ours usually clicks in 2-3 seconds but you may need to drive 50-100 feet to get straight before it locks. Thanks for watching! Mike and Susan

You can add a 2200ld "D" ring to one side of your bumper to connect your break away cable Also, putting your jeep in neutral does not leave your accessories on. Big question for the whole flat tow and invisabrake community. We bought a USED 2017 Sport Unlimited from the local Jeep dealer. Had a RV tech install the Blue Ox and invisabrake just recently. [Jeep is not under factory warranty]. So we had a oil/ tire rotation scheduled included a issue with brakes thst existed prior to invisabrake install, we wanted to review prior to a road trip. The DEALERSHIP refused to even look at the brake issue. They stated UPGRADES unless original Jeep parts or Mopar- they will not do any work including if you change the wheel rims. Have any Jeep owners run into this refusal to work on their jeeps? It just blew my mind - seeing all the new jeeps on the lot and knowing a jeep is one of the most customizable vehicles. But maybe it's just me.

You wouldn't want to do anything that would void the warranty or if there was an accident the insurance wouldn't cover the damage. We have a blog article from our website that might help search a better tow option. Thanks for watching and commenting. rvblogger.com/blog/cars-flat-towed-behind-an-rv/

Thank you for your video. We just got the same system and are pulling our 2021 Ford Escape Hybrid. Two questions: 1. Where are putting your eBikes now? We have a hitch behind our SUV but are not really comfortable with them being there. 2. Do you know when exactly you would use the remote that comes with it to put on the car brakes? Thanks again. This is the first video of yours I watched. Looks like I will have to check some others out now.

Great Questions! We put our e-bikes on the back of our Class A. We use a dual hitch along with a Thule Bike rack to make it all work. I'll include some links so you can see how it all works. We use a dual hitch and our Blue Ox Tow Bar goes into the bottom hitch receiver and out Thule Bike Rack goes into the top receiver. Here are the links so you can see both of these items: Dual Hitch Receiver: amzn.to/3NXngg4 We needed a dual hitch with a 2" drop to ensure that our tow bars are as level as possible. You may need more or less than 2" but the idea is to be sure your tow bars are level and on the bottom hitch receiver. Thule Bike Rack: amzn.to/3pRNUix The Thule Bike Rack goes into the top receiver and has held our two e-bikes with no issues for thousands of miles. I suggest getting the top receiver 6" high or more (I think ours is 8") so you have room to stow your tow bars without having to remove the Thule Bike Rack to do so. The Blue Ox Tow Bar swings to the side when stowed and if there isn't enough room between the hitch receivers it won't work. We also bought a good bike cover to keep rain and dirt off of the e-bikes. Our first cover ripped but the second cover we bought has held up for thousands of miles. Here's the good bike cover we bought: amzn.to/43vj4Ko As far as braking goes the Patriot Brake System is not a remote control system. It has a pendulum inside it and it sits inside the jeep and connects to the brake. When I hit the brakes in the RV the pendulum in the Patriot Brake Controller swings forward and causes it to apply the brake in our Jeep. It has a sensitivity setting from 1 - 10. I usually keep ours at a 2 but I set it at 4 when driving on steep downhill grades. You can set it on the fly because there is a control module that sits on the dash in your RV so you can easily change it while driving. Hope all this helps! Mike

Wow, just wow! Exactly what I was looking for. We just bought a used Jeep Wrangler 2021 4WD 2 doors and have the Blu Ox system installed today (with the Patriot brake system). We will get it back this Friday and will tow it behind our Dynamax Isata 3 Class C RV for the first time. But I do have 2 important questions: 1. What are you doing with the transmission on the Jeep side? According to the Jeep owner's manual, the transfer case must be set to Neutral (N) and the automatic transmission should be in Park (P). Is it right? 2. If you are in a situation where you have to move back (reverse) with your RV, can you do it or you have to first disengaged the Jeep from the tow bar? Many thanks again Mike and Suzan for the great video. Well explained and well done!

Glad you like the video and I'm sure you will love towing your Jeep with the Blue Ox system! Two great questions: Question 1: Yes the manual is correct. Once you get your transfer case into Neutral then you place the automatic transmission into Park. This is exactly what we do with our Jeep. Here is the procedure: 1. Turn on engine and put transmission into neutral 2. Turn off engine and put transfer case into Neutral 3. Turn on engine and place transmission into Drive and then Reverse to ensure the transfer case is in Neutral and disengaged 4. Put Jeep transmission into Park and turn off the engine Question 2: Never Ever back up with your Jeep connected to your rig. If you have to back up you need to disconnect your Jeep first. We have had multiple RV techs and mechanics tell us this same info. There are definitely others who will tell you it is ok to back up a little bit or if you install some special part it will enable you to back up but we prefer to play it safe. Thanks for watching and enjoy towing your Jeep!!! It really is a game changer that will enhance your RV camping experience. Mike

You're welcome! Don't mind you asking at all. To have the base plate and wiring installed on the Jeep to get it road ready for towing was $750. Our installing included the "trickle charge" to make sure the Jeep battery doesn't die while in tow mode. Feel free to ask any questions. Thank you for your support!

In the green box at the bottom towards the end of the video I noticed it says never backup when connected to TOAD, so I started to wonder if that means you can not backup while towing?
@RVBlogger
@RVBlogger Ай бұрын
Correct - we can not back up while towing our Jeep. So every time I hit a gas station it's a game to see if I can land us next to the gas pump without the need to back up. I've only gotten into a jam once or twice in two years where we had to unhook so I could back up.

So it turns out that our brake light does work, but when the Jeep is connected to our motorhome it does not. I'm pretty sure this is because the wiring setup is meant for two tail lights - not three.. Thanks for noticing and bringing it to our attention. Mike

@RVBlogger

I'm very curious to see how it will handle in towing conditions. Seems like it can tow 2,000-3,500lbs depending on which model and a driving range of 370 miles before re-charge, but that will definitely be less in tow mode. So I will definitely stay informed. Blue Ox has several styles of tow bars based on your towing needs. Then there are other accessories like braking system that are additional. Bars, alone, begin around $750. You can find the total cost based on your needs on the Blue Ox website. Thank you for watching our Tow Bar video and commenting Alan.

From what I have researched, it says, put the four-wheel-drive system in neutral the transmission piece in park.. If you're running a 7-way plug from the RV to the tow vehicle, it has a wire already that is hot. Meaning it has power coming from the coach. You would just need to connect from the plug to the battery I would think!
