Blue Skies and Winter Snow: Early Season Railfanning on Donner Pass

It's that time of the year yet again! With snowfall quickly exceeding average levels, I decided some trips to the pass were in order. The storms were so vicious, that I-80 was shut down on multiple different days. With the road closed, I was forced to wait for clear days to go up. Anyway, here are scenes from all up and down the legendary Donner Pass, of a variety of freight trains taking their turns at scaling the mountain. Enjoy.

Indeed, it's my personal favorite route to railfan, for the scenery and for the history that makes the railroad what it is.

THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO I LOVED IT. I HAVE WATCHED VIDEOS OF DONNER WITH THE CAB FORWARD STEAM ENGINES AND THE ROTARY PLOWS. I LOVED THE VIDEO OF THE SNOW STORMS FROM 51 AND 52. I'M STILL AMZED HOW THE BIG DIESELS EAT UP GROWN ON THE MOUNTAIN WITH LITTLE EFFORT. I LOAVE ON THE RIGHT COAST IN MAINE DONNER PASS IS ON MY BUCKET LIST. I APPRECAITE YOUR WORK

Been over a 100' here for 2 months and don't know if that snow is inviting or you are plain crazy standing out in it to make pictures.LOL That one evening or night shot of the short fast refrigerated freight interesting as its 8 cars must have been forgotten and needed to GO. Fresh produce. Better you than I taking these movies. Burrrrrr Thanks for the entertainment

You're welcome. The snow was perfectly manageable when I went up to shoot. The baby salad shooter was filmed in the early morning before sunrise. They usually run small out of Delano/McFarland and join up with the Pacific Northwest section in the Midwest.

Great video! Nothing like railfanning on Donner, even if it's UP.
@Alwaystrains
@Alwaystrains 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Although it's UP, the essence of SP never left. When UP took over SP operations, UP kept a lot of SP's old operating practices, right down to their symbol code. Even today, long and heavy trains headed by big consists of grimy locomotives still traverse the hill, just as SP's trains had. UP also has a dedicated power pool of tunnel-grimed gevos that get added to trains in Roseville and taken off in Sparks, then run light back to Roseville. The only difference is that the locomotives are gevos rather than tunnel motors. So yeah, modern day UP is just SP in a different color haha.

I used to go up there in the '80s and watch the SP, it was an amazing site with all power, front and helpers. Andrew, what type of videocam do you use, really nice exposure?

How did you get to the bridge before shed 10? It looks hard to get to on Google maps.

Great video, the Donner Pass is my favorite route jointly the Teahachapi route. One question: the Amtrak train at Newcastle what is it?
@Alwaystrains
@Alwaystrains 7 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Both routes have their unique qualities that make them great for shooting. The Amtrak at Newcastle is Capitol Corridor #729, headed west from Auburn to Oakland.

Ours are no longer than 30 cars and that is Network Rail. The US has 100+ on average, Bigger country longer trains.

how accessible are most of those spots in the snow? for example at 8:30 and 18:00?
@Alwaystrains
@Alwaystrains 6 жыл бұрын
It really depends on how much snow there is. On a sunny day with minimal snow, getting to them is easy. The first spot (shed 10) is a fairly easy drive in light snow with a 4x4 vehicle. The second spot (Norden summit shed) is spot where you have to park your car up on the road and walk down to track level. That's all with light snow. In deep snow, most vehicles won't make it to shed 10. Snowshoes will be necessary for that. Norden is still accessible, snowshoes are recommended but not required to get to it.

Hi, I like your movies and with the sound up it's really great. BUT: it's annoying to hear your SLR cam beeping and clicking all the time. My advise for pure unhindered sound is that you setup your movie cam, start it and create enough distance so that the sound of the SLR cam isn't recorded anymore. Have fun! Rob.
@Alwaystrains
@Alwaystrains 7 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I've run into that issue in the past. You're not the first person to mention it. I have since invested in a camera with a quieter shutter, but suppressing the sound is still quite difficult when railfanning with shutter-happy friends. I'm not about to tell them to stop or move away. Sometimes we end up in locations where there isn't a whole lot of space to venture away from the tripod. In either case, I'm doing what I can do.

also, that's some hike to get from cisco road to shed ten in the snow. just sayin'...
@Alwaystrains
@Alwaystrains 7 жыл бұрын
The first spot shown in the video is known on the railroad as "Union Mills," also known as Glenshire. I was standing on the side of a cliff behind a back-country neighborhood to get the shot. The hike up to shed 10 wasn't that bad. It was just the equipment that weighed me down.

Nah, it's plenty easy when you have the right equipment. Also, avoid going alone. It helps to have others around to aid in problem-solving should an issue arise.
