I bought the album the better part of ten years ago from one of the Allman Bros. Band's websites. Please consult there for further information on where to get this music.
Most of this solo is ad-libbed, of course.
And listen to that lively bass, too! Berry Oakley and Duane Allman really made the band. Might be fun to pull out just the les paul and the bass tracks sometime and see what it sounds like.

Dickey Instructions: Now post an exhaustive lick-for-lick treatment with documented time intervals of exactly why the first solo is more Dickey and less Duane than the second solo. Then I will unban everyone previously banned from here for saying it's Dickey. However, any unsupported rambling accusation of it being Dickey "just because", and I will ban you from this video. I am aware it will be completely soul-crushing for you ;) But it kind of is for me, because I've never banned or blocked anyone from any medium for just an opinion, except for this. It has been going on for years, I'm sick of it, and the unwillingness to click on a link and support an argument while still maintaining a pigheaded unsupported opinion is one of the most disrespectful things to Duane's memory that I can imagine. So put up or shut up. That is all.

It can't get any better when you hear Duane Allman. I'm 68 years old and got to see Duane at a small theatre in Huntington NY in June of 1971 and it was a magical musical experience to watch him play and talk to the audience. He was the leader, the Boss of the ABB for sure. A great guitarist, I'll always be 19 when I hear the ABB!!

Very few bassists in popular music command the kind of respect commanded by the late Berry Oakley himself commanded in hardcore, straight-ahead jazz circles. Oakley had a brilliant imagination and could play anything. He was an ideal bridge between the front line of the band - Duane, Dickey, and Greg - and the drummers, Jaimoe and Butch Trucks. The band found some stellar replacements after Oakley passed, but none could really fill his shoes. He was such a unique talent.

It’s crazy to think that just 1 month and 10 days after this masterful performance, he would pass away. What a legendary person, and one of the greatest guitarists of all time. he was gone to soon, but what he left us will last an eternity within our hearts.

Thats actually Dickeys influence, Dickey wrote this , Dickey is the master of the major pentatonic, quite difficult to stay major for an enitre song, to solo over major is harder than minor. As Duane said, I'm the famous guitarist, Dickey is the good guitarist!

+Jesse Garduno - most I have seen say 2nd to only Jimi. I am 64, and I concur. Was lucky enough to head to Nashville in summer of 1970, had another gig. From July of '70 through mid 1971, saw them 4 times in Nashville, as the Brothers played there often, were born there. Would have loved to seen a live rendition of the Derek & the Dominoes album, with all the players, Radle, Gordon, and God. Eric will tell you in a minute he and Jimmy were good, but the kings were two American boys, Jimi, and Duane. And for anyone thinking I mean 2nd to Eric, I give you Experience, Ladyland and Axis. Listen to those 10 times, come back, we'll talk. What do you think that Jimi and Duane might have done together between 1971 and 2016? Sure wish I had been able to know. We all would have continually been blown away - gone too quickly, gone too soon. Gone, too bad.

My next door neighbor was a road manager for the Allman's in the 70's. We lived in the country in S Florida. Saturday nights the band would play off the bed of a 40 foot flatbed trailer. Best music of all time!!!!!

I completely agree about your comment on who was the greatest, there are so many great guitarist's and they all have their own style, Hendrix, Al Di Meola, Paco De Lucia,Roy Clark,Eric Clapton, George Thorogood, Stevie Ray Vaughan , the list goes on and on. There is no one and only greatest guitar player, just many great guitar players.

I first heard the Brothers when I was 14. My older brother was a fan. Duane died a year later. I mourned his death almost like a family member. His solos felt more like an extension of his soul than just another guitar solo. I've always wondered what we've missed by his useless death that day.

Even though I love Dwayne Jeff Beck is pretty damn good and one of the underrated super talents Mick Taylor the early Stones guitarist is a bad boy. We don't compare we just love. And thumbs up to Keith Richards Rory Gallagher Jimi Hendrix and George Harrison oh, did I leave out a dozen I'm sure I did. This solo does a brain good.

Obviously one of the most creative (and yes, musical) guitarists we've ever been blessed to hear. Tomorrow marks the 49th anniversary of his untimely death at the age of only 24. But what really stands out for me is his phrasing. How he repeats a phrase once or twice, like an orator, then changes it slightly and moves on to the next phrase. There are so many of his phrases that I like, and to hear them 2 or 3x is such a joy. An Allman joy. God bless you, Sky Dog.

@ Richard Bruce Music: The people closest to him say that Duane learned not only from listening to the great blues and other guitarists around him and who came before, but also the best horn players and blues harpists. Little Walter Jacobs in particular, informed his sense of phrasing when playing slide in an open tuning. At least that's what I hear when I listen to his amazing slide work. Not just his phrases, but his tone, too, which at times even sounded like a distorted blues harp - like Little Walter used to overdrive his harp using his mic and an amplifier or house PA.

No guitarist moves me more than Duane Allman still to this day. I still remember as clear as day the day he died and I heard it on the AM radio. My world was deprived of a gigantic talent and to be honest I've never gotten over it. Saw them 6 mos later or so with Dicky and Chuck but I was still devastated by his loss as I'm sure everyone else was. God bless Duane, Barry and Gregg Thank you Peach State

Duane is a good example of musicality over virtuosity. At the end, musicality wins the people's heart. It's been a long time since his passing but I still haven't heard more musical sounding slide guitar from anybody.

That is just great! Love it! I turned 14 on 9/19/71. I had "Eat A Peach", and listened to it over and over, picking out each riff and lick, to learn the guitar. I remember trying to drop the needle again and again on the exact spot on the record, because I didn't have a cassette or reel to reel tape machine, all I had was a turntable.

Often, to me anyway, Duane's notes sound "round" and Dickey's notes sound "straight, cutting". Duane's solos seem to "roll" and Dickey"s seem to "slice". Great compliments to each other.

Duane was incredibly nuanced inhis playing he could play a mini phrase with just two notes over 2/3/4 bars and never play them the same way where as dickey wasn't as fluid and worked hemiolas to death

+kevinshaferguitarsongs Some of that, SOME of that ..... has to do with the inherently different sounds of even 2 identical Les Paul's. Duane's did have a bit more warmth (round) , Dickey's a little more "Bite". Some say metallic but I don't like that description. 2 guitars made exactly the same , on the same day, with the same # of "winds" on the pickups will never be exactly the same. No matter how hard you try. Then again, stylistically , both guitarists would sound different playing the exact same phrase on the same guitar. And they'd both sound like themselves on a $100 knockoff. Bottom line, that version of the band had 2 of the best guitarists that ever strapped on an axe. And continued that tradition when they added Warren Haynes, and then Derek Trucks. How lucky can Greg Allman get !?!?!?!?

+ursafan40 Well said. I did read/hear that Duane used a "nearly dead" battery in his pedal because of what it did to the tone. Which makes sense. Max the output when input is very low does have an effect.

The solo is brilliant, no words to describe it really, just pure feel, and made so much more impressive in context with the ensemble playing of everyone else. Duane is floating over a bedrock of rhythm and groove by musicians who know what it means to play for the song. They don’t make em like this any more!

Derek is much more than technically skilled. He's wondrous. His sound runs through my soul and is still running through my soul from over a month ago at the Beacon. An absolutely gloriously beautiful, magical, enchanting musician. That's not to say that Duane isn't the King. That's how I'd compare them musically. Duane is the King, and Derek is the Prince.

This is the last song I would want to hear if I knew I was going deaf. Yes the sound quality isn't the best, I know that. But the feeling it conveys during the guitar solo is exultation, pure joy. Everything bright and beautiful in the world caught up in this solo like dandelion seeds blowing on the breeze. I love it.

Duane and Dickey and Berry were fantastic together, nobody could cut them for what they accomplished. But Dickey was instrumental on the Fillmore album. On all the long jaunts, Dickies guitar leads the band into the unknown......especially whipping post. Dickies guitar slows the band down just before the drum solo, incredible playing. Dickey came up with the frere Jacque lick also......just incredible improvisational playing beautiful music. Duane let Dickey run free and thank God for that

I always could tell the difference between Duane and Dickey by listening to the notes.. if you hear the notes individually and there's a big on twang, it's Dickey.. if they bleed together and sort of swim around each other it's Duane.

Somehow his fingers were able to just sail over the frets, creating a sound like smooth honeyed whisky licking along your tongue, making you go, "Umm yes! When you compare Duane to other guitar contemporaries what sets him apart to me is the jazz influence in there (especially on a modal type jam) and how well his solos are developed using so many expressive devices... dynamics, jazz phrasing, bluesy phrasing, the runs up and down the neck...he was an absolute musical genuis beyond categorization. He could fit into about any style of music and still be himself. This is wonderful!!!

Roger that. I've always said, you can listen to Fillmore East in particular and think you're hearing 3-4 different bands. ABB taught me a lot about playing gtr. Listened them from the 70's and started playing in '63 at 9 yrs old. They are and always be my all time favorite band, bar none.

I am 58 and used to set up the equipment for srv an double trouble at a small club in ft. Worth tx. From 79-81. Blossoms downstairs. also at tootsies when he played there. I'm a little prejudiced perhaps, but he, e.c., Freddie king and Rory Gallagher we're and r, the best blues guitarists ever.period. Duane the best slide.(Derek trucks and Elvin Bishop &yes, Bonnie raitt), close. I'm very excited for the opportunity to add to the best of list,for the first time. Jeff Beck is probably my favorite overall. I believe there are "greatest", guitarists for many genres of music. Such as c&w greats, Chet Atkins& Roy Clark, an "new-boots", Keith Urban & Brad Paisley. I just love great guitar music of all kinds. Thanks,b.p.

the thing ab out Duane's playing without a slide is that he sounds like he's playing with one.that's the beauty of it to me.that's his voice! I think it's amazing but makes so much sense.

First time I saw them at stony brook I was one of about 6 people they came back after the Fillmore album came out and it was standing room only cost then about 2.50 a show,seems like I’m out living all my good memories

Stunning - just the best electric guitar playing ever - this is up there with the best because it sings, not because it is technically difficult. This is what great musicians do - listen to, say, Rubinstein play Chopin - it is different 'cause he understood the message of the music. Duane had something - not sure what it was - and this piece captures it perfectly.

I was at this performance at Stonybrook University having just been discharged from my tour overseas in the US Army. Was good to be home. The ABB was quite a treat for me back then.

Never got to hear Duane. I did hear Dickey play this song. It took me back to '72 High School Wausau WI with 6 guys in a Maverick riding around getting high to Eat A Peach on 8 track. After the 2nd or 3rd time around it was time to go home. Great musicians in a GREAT band!!

Regardless of who is playing this solo, it is one of the all-time greats. I remember heading to "Matrices and Vectors" class at Florida State (not my favorite class), and hearing this song and getting really pumped up! This is such an incredibly melodic song ... just blows me away. And what guitar tone! Woof!

love love love this!! The band is just so tight...this is just the perfect song...the perfect jam. I remembered when they first released this album, i saw that the bluesky cut was so long i freaked out, ripped the plastic off and went right to track 6. Hearing it that first time was an overwhelming emotional experience that I've never quite gotten over.

Duane's guitar was given to him as a replacement for another. Even though this guitar by today's standards is priceless he said the one he lost was even better.

Paid 25 cents to see ABB and Skynerd at the Westside woman club in Jacksonville Florida. First concern and my brother asked me if I wanted to see the Allman and I said why would I want to see the Osmands Best Show to start with!!! Thank You Brother!!!

I'm 67 years old and I grew up on this music, and I still don't think anyone will come close to what Duane Allman did in short we had him here on earth... In my opinion he's still the greatest slide player that ever lived... Dickey Betts is the only one to even come close...And now Gregg's gone I will miss them all my days left on this earth... To me they are the best band of all times, so heaven must one hell of a band...Thank you Boys and rest in peace 😢😊
