Logitech have branched out into the microphone market with the Blue Sona - a mic designed with modern broadcasters, podcasters and streamers in mind.
But is it enough to keep up with the classics? How does it stack up against the Shure SM7B?

They sound very similar. They both sound good. The Sure SM7B sounds more rich and full to my ears. I think I'll stick with the SM7B. But as soon as I have a few extra bucks, I will probably go out and buy the Blue Sona.

the added db boost is nice but yeah gonna agree as well, sm7b all day

The fact that it comes with a +20db boost adds crazy competition. As a SM7b user it was pretty inconvenient having to buy a cloud lifter and hook it up along with my microphone.

James Your sound on SM7B is deep like more bass and exaggerated but the Blues Sona you sound natural.

If I was a dynamic mic guy, I'd keep an eye open for one of the Logitechs. Generally speaking, computer peripherals can be found from so many discount sources, whereas Shure mics are very tightly price controlled. That might mean finding a Blue Sona for a really good deal at some point. Once you apply your processing, it'll sound however you want.

Even though the Logitech Blue Sona sounds pretty good, I can still hear quite the difference between the two and the SM7B wins my vote as far as sound goes. I will however say I do enjoy the look of the Blue Sona as I feel it is a good look for video style podcasting. Sound obviously is the key factor in a microphone so SM7B wins in my book.

Hey James, Charlie in South Africa the SM 7B is still king, and I’ll tell you why. The logitech microphone sounds OK for a female voice, but because you have a male voice, and it needs much more basic sound to bring out those loaner Tazewell, you sound a little bit tinny with the Logitech microphone. But different strokes for different folks, right? Otherwise than that, that logitech microphone sounds fine, but not as beautiful as the SM 7B.

To my ear, The SM7b sounded warmer, with more bass and was louder than the New Mic. So in this comparison at least I much preferred the sound of the old tech.

I don’t have the budget to throw more money at a mic. I’ve been using the Samson Q2U via xlr and usb in different scenarios very happily. I bought the Rodecaster Pro 2 instead with my money. And there’s enough adjustment for me to get the mic sounding good enough for my current needs.

I have both. People on here saying there is a massive difference probably aren't using them for podcasts. There isnt'a massive difference. One is cheaper, doesn't need a cloudlifter etc. but sound-wise, I have recorded on both, and the difference is almost (and probably completely) imperceptible. Judging these mics from a KZfaq recording is quite simply .. not very sensible.

The SM7B is much richer, at least in this comparison. I'd also suggest it doesn't need extra inline preamps, given the likes of the MOTU M2, the Vocaster range, and many other interfaces that can handle the SM7B easily enough.

Blue Sona sounded the most honest on your voice. It sounds very transparent and clear. In comparison the SM7B sounds warmer but also doesn't suit your voice. It makes it sound nasally.

I like the Logitech It looks modern and sleek compared to the Shure but in terms of sound the Shure still sounds better.

The Shure SM7B has more rich deep bass to it, though that could be a achieved with the Blue Sona by tweaking settings in a application or with a preamp/mixer.

I feel they don't stack up as equal counterparts. The Blue Sona has a rather fat dynamic range with flat, muddy mid's and tons of high/low frequency drop-out. This sucks all of the energy, air and natural presence out of the output. The SM7B on the other hand, has a more richly balanced dynamic and presence. There is very little frequency roll off and it offers cleaner, clearer natural compression, rather than the artificial resistance of the Blue.

sm7b has always had a muddy sound to it, I'm curious to add eq settings to the blue sona to see what you can get out of it

Getting the Blue Sona as move from USB Mic to XLR, everyone has the sm7b so i’ll dare to be different and save 50 bucks

There is way more detail in the SM7B and it's not even close. The Sona sounds tinny like a headset mic. Not a fan, would require heavy eq to enhance it.

While i appreciate the video, vocals/singing needs to be heard inorder to get a better comparison. Just talking they sound almost identical, there's no "depth" with talking. Sona is better with ur high pitch tinny voice IMO (less aanoying), a deeper voice the Shure would go better with. Both sound professional & almost identical.

The frequency response of the SM7B is vastly better than the Blue Sona in my opinion. But the difference for most of my listeners is negligible. It doesn't how good you rmic is when the material is listened to on an iphone or ipad!

So - given it's not a perfect sonic chain, over the internet, through KZfaq, slightly better than average (but not much) built in iMac Pro speakers instead of reference monitors - I can readily tell the difference with greater low frequency on the SM7B - which is why the Shure was used in so many radio stations back in the 70's/80's. But here's the thing - most radio DJ's had well modulated, deep baritone voices to start - or at least they tried to sound like they did. So the Shure was perfect as they started with those warm bass tones and didn't have to rely on signal processing tricks. Today, I hear all kinds of squeeky geekvoiced podcasters trying to use the SM7B to the same end - I think there's some mic settings, and then they bump the EQ. Unfortunately, while it might sound OK in the studio, it ends up muddy as heck on the final product and I can almost pick out a SM7B every time. It's almost ubiqitous. But not here - while James sounded good on both mics, and you can hear the increased low frequency response of the SM7B, it didn't approach the muddy sound I hear so often - so I have to say I found more presence with the Shure than the logitech. I've been trying some ribbon mics to find that low end capability without having to push the signal unduly hard - but til then, sticking with the Shure, and pushing more midrange in the EQ - was taught the best EQ method is to remove gain of what you don't want and let what you do want pass through - which is true, or if it's not it should be.

I don't know what the people saying they "sound similar" are listening this video on because on a FiiO dac with my Sennheiser HD 598 the Blue Sona sounds terrible. Incredibly thin and tinny, and the SM7B sounds considerably deeper and richer.
