Crossing the Atlantic one year, under sail, we had a whale join us for 3 days, surfing in our wake, and playing with us. If it had wanted to, it could have sunk us in a minute! We really felt we were all just having fun!

@Aureliacornelia79AGracchus Sounds magical, what kind of whale? I’ve had dolphins do that for short periods, and close encounters with Orcas, but the Orcas were just passing by. Much easier to have these kind of experiences in a sail boat.

That sounds so awesome! I’ve been sailing off the northeast coast, and dolphins will do the same. A much more common sight, I know, but just as thrilling for me. I get excited when I see dolphins from the beach. I’ve never seen a whale in the wild….only killer whales in captivity, which didn’t thrill me, I just felt sad for them. Have been in Puget Sound, but the whales were a no show. I’d love to take a whale watching trip one of these days.

First I thought they were doing what Dolphins do or maybe the boat startled them. Maybe 3-5 seconds after, I saw a massive shadow of a shark following the cluster, possibly attracted by the boat motor (fish were too small to attract this shark) From my guess, it was bigger than a full sized couch because the boat was about 25ft long.

@@omarthedeadaziz6756 of course can be too. Small motorboats capable to be like.. Slice their meat. Not just whale. But also dugong and others. Boat and big ship's machines are the worst. Not just about the blades. But also about the sounds. Have u ever tried to place yourself underwater especially your head? When u r underwater, the sound is so loud but blurry, right? Same goes when u watch a video about some divers dive the ocean. The bubble air sounds are so loud, right? That also how they hear the ocean everyday. They can hear loud noises even if it is just from a small movement. BUT the sound is blurry. So imagine if these motor engines that already so loud even for human on the land in the port, come to disturb the sea creatures. They will be panic of course. And will alter their migration route, hunting ground, mating area, and home area. noise pollution is a big deal for sea creatures. and for "air creatures", it's light pollution. humankind altered most part of the world. lot of animals suffer..

I've had a different whale species, a grey whale or a right whale, rise up next to my jetboat inside the bar in Charleston while crabbing in Oregon. It was about 35' to 40' long and cruising just like the one in this video. It went upstream for about ten minutes and then came back by, surfacing once more right next to my boat, blowing it's smelly breath and spray as it glided past towards the open ocean. I remember it had a very curved mouth and what seemed like an awful lot of barnacles all over it's body. We have even had wild pods of orca cruise into the brackish water of the river in Winchester Bay, Charleston Harbor and of course further along up the coast.

For Valentines day my gf and me went to the beach in Kona, we had a great day , caught some waves, had fun. Then we see half the beach stop what they are doing and gaze out to sea, there was a huge pod of whales breaching, some going full out of the water. Some just tails, some half ways..... it was amazing and it went on for a good 15 min which us the longest I've seen at one time. We got fish tacos and burgers at a place near by afterwards, one of the best days we've had in some time :)

They say the best time to see whales is winter in Hawaii or summer in Alaska. My boyfriend and I went on an Alaskan cruise in July several years ago. We watched whales, orcas, and dolphins all through the cruise, sometimes from our cabin balcony and other times from our table in the cafe area next to the windows while we were eating lunch. It was amazing!

Thank you for sharing this with us!!! I loved it!! And when I saw the whale come up out of the water, I smiled, and I bet you that the whale was just crossing your path to say, "Hello!". Whales can be playful too. Years ago, when I was watching a concert on TV, there was a group of fine musicians, all were orchestra type instrument players, and they all met and set up their equipment out on some flat long rocks by the ocean. And then they started to play smooth sounding music, and some whales nearby came and moved around in the water keeping time with the gentle music, gliding along in the water. But then when the musicians switched to a loud, vibrant sounding tempo, then the whales actually started to respond to that powerfully, by their crashing into the water, going up and down, moving like they felt like they were keeping time with this loud pounding beat too!! Can you believe it?! 🤓

“Out of nowhere” Well, only if you call the ocean, the whale’s habitat, “nowhere.” Sometimes when I’m riding my bike, a car “suddenly appears” next to me. But not out of nowhere. Lol
@borderlineiq
@borderlineiq Жыл бұрын
In fairness, it was a phrase to describe that it visually appeared out of nowhere since the plane between air and water cannot be seen through in choppy waves. Even in a calm see, that whale could not be seen until it reached the surface. So, to the pilot of the craft, it did appear out of nowhere, unlike a ship on the surface.

@@Erin-Thor i agree with you. i live in Boston and we have a pod of humpbacks that spend the summer on the Stellwagen Bank off the coast here and also we have the highly endangered northern right whales that frequent the area. So we have had the idea of keeping a good distance away from the creatures drummed into our heads....and also the big problem of ship strikes. So i was probably a bit quick to judgement.
@Erin-Thor
@Erin-Thor 3 жыл бұрын
Wright Gregson - I wasn’t trying to disrespect you, in as much as I’ve been there, done that... you don’t cut your engine on a whim, you do it for a reason. Some older boats w steel hulls have current directed to their hulls to reduce growth. Fish jump at electrical current in the water from those hull types or from current in the water, all the time. Weird to see but not that unusual. That said, we’ve cut our engines quite a few times then realized it was not a log, fish, or other animal... it was trash. LOL!
