For me, Blue Oyster Cult stood the test of time a heck of a lot better than Kiss did. Nothing personal with Kiss but I simply can't get into their music at all and I can't get enough of BOC.

IMO, Kiss made the last quality records in Creatures or Lick it Up , 82/83. BOC made better stuff longer. Their comeback 2lp," The Symbol Remains" is good stuff! Kiss never made a decent record after the early 80s, all weak material.

@@ronjames6128You’re talking about commercial success and moments of glory, but you might want to check the rooms KISS was touring in 82-83. I’m not a fan of comparing bands based on box office grosses over the music itself, whether the music holds up. A lot of BOC holds up but KISS have way more cringe in their back catalog. KISS had a better debut album over BOC but that’s my opinion.

KISS was more popular and sold more albums. But as far as musicianship is concerned, KISS couldn’t hold a candle to BÖC.

Can’t wait for the new album. Nothing better than the original BÖC lineup. I was never fortunate enough to see all the original members together live in person. I’d love to see the Bouchard brothers with Buck, Eric and Ritchie. I was fortunate to see BÖC with Allen before he passed and saw Joe with the Cult Bros but have never seen Albert perform in person.

My fav BOC album will always be their first. When Metallica covered "Astronomy" from their second album, it forced me to revisit the original version. Then I heard the "Imaginos" version with Buck on vocals, and although Buck's version isn't exactly bad, there is no comparison to Eric Bloom's original version. In 1980 I had a paper route (remember those?) and I was shooting my big mouth off about going to the "Black and Blue" concert - Black Sabbath headlining with Blue Oyster Cult opening. It was the "Heaven and Hell" tour for Sabbath with Dio on vocals. Of course, my parents said, "No way," so I couldn't go to the show, but BOC opened without a hitch, or so the story goes, and Sabbath flew into Chicago (I'm from Milwaukee), the flight was delayed, and they hit bad traffic. Sabbath finally took the stage an hour and half late and into their second song some idiot threw a beer bottle and hit Geezer Butler in the head. Sabbath left the stage, and their manager came on and announced, "Show's over." The fans ripped the arena apart, causing a small riot in downtown Milwaukee and from that day forth, Black Sabbath was banned, to this day, from ever playing in Milwaukee live. True story. BOC, on the other hand, has always been welcomed back!

We went to see the same tour. We completely missed Black Sabbath ,who opened for Blue Oyster Cult at our show, because of traffic. It was reminiscent of Woodstock ,In that regards. But it was disastrous too. Traffic jam getting out and people were of course, stoned. Two killed. One was hit by a car and one by a train. And they banned concerts after that at the Speedway.

Speaking of killer double bills, I saw Blue Oyster Cult play a show with April Wine in 2001. They paired really well. But I can see why those double bills are so rare these days (outside of mega festivals). Most shows I go see these days either have no opening act (like Sparks) or else just bring on a local artist.

Grew up on BOC and Sabbath so know he's telling truth, over the years learned quite a few similar stories from different American bands that Ozz and company played with in the early daze. Like Sab's roadies would unplug Sir Lord Baltimore's equipment at live shows. SLB would blow them off the stage with their out of control NYC wildcat style.

@@mikee2923 Idk, some bands simply just don't mesh with other bands for various reasons. Van Halen were the new kids on the scene when they opened for Sabbath in '78. And VH literally blew them off the stage. Ironically the Sab guys got a long with them famously. Good blow perhaps, who knows lol

I would want to ask Eric whether he practiced adding extra lyrics to songs for live performances, or whether it was improvisational. For instance, in song seven screaming DB live he would describe a Faustian bargain band made with the devil. But every time he performed it, it was different. It was also true for other songs. PS- BOC circa black and blue tour were far more dynamic on stage than sabbath. It wasnt even close and that may have something to do with failure to release the concert footage.

Nancy Wilson dated Roger too for their first few years & said he was a real douche. But yeah, if Heart had that approach about them coming to the stage...pretty lame if that came from the band itself

We had 20 below temps outside after the show, a dangerous exit for the party crowd, but did not stop the show. I love Ozzy, but Dio was a natural fit for Sabbath. Never forget this gig. Most “famous” Rock Stars laugh inside and out when fans compare them and/or their band to other well known rock acts. It’s the unique nature of each and all musicians to stay true to their art. That’s just the way it is. Comparisons are for fans. A true artist, musical or otherwise couldn’t care less. Just my opinion… but It’s what I’ve learned and observed in the business. Rock on…
