This 2021 "Blueberry" Epiphone 335 is on the workbench today - the owner is complaining of tuning and intonation issues. It was recently purchased and setup by the big box guitar store... poorly, one might set. The string action is too high and the nut action is very high as well - probably contributing to the tuning and intonation problems. I will do a full setup and address an problems that we find. Enjoy he video!

This is super well done. Thank you. Such expertise. After watching this I’m not sure I should have bought so many cheap guitars (I have this same model and many like Epiphones SG, Les Paul etc). I think got spooked with the fretboard issues. I guess I’m hoping with a more expensive guitar won’t have that. But then the worst quality guitar I have is a Fender Clapton signature strat I bought new in 1990 so I don’t know 🤷‍♂️

You never know about the quality until you have it in your hands... I always reccomend trying a guitar first and have a tech or luthier look at it before purchasing if possible.

Great demo..... one question, if these pickups were to be swapped for say Tony Iommi's(Black Sabbath and he is noted for playing Gibson SGs) pickups would this guitar or any of Gibson semi -acoustic guitars be able to have that 'new' sound? Thanks and keep it up.

Best thing to do is to replace the epi machine heads for Kluson REVOLUTION Tulip pearl keystones locking tuners. They are a direct drop in no mod replacement and they look great. They are the best tuners. I did it to my Epi IBG 335. ITS NOW PERFECT.

Excellent video. I guess I miss the part where you did the intonation procedure. Can anybody point it to me (at what time)? I always get confused to which direction to turn the screw (most of the times if is sharp). Thank you so much for this tutorial

This video was fun !! All Asian guitars need Nut action address, then ----- strings off , straighten neck , address frets , move on with rest of setup !! 3/64 action E/e string !! Don't frown -- worked on $5k plus guitars with same issues !! Nut action ? Press string at 3rd fret , and sand nut bottom til slight gap between string and fret at first fret !! Use the metal string gauge as a fret rocker !! Note, if there's more than a few slight frets needing address , then have guitar replace !! Repair tech s at music stores have little knowledge with proper fret leveling !! Manufacturers specs are a guide line !! He/She don't have to obey them !! LoL

I know this is an older video but thank you. I have similar issues with my new Epi 335 dot and this will be very helpful. I watch all your videos as I'm just starting out trying to learn tonwork on guitars. Quick maybe silly question but what do you use to clean the work mat on your bench? Thanks in advance and keep the great videos coming. You have earned a subsciber!

Very thorough & detailed setup. I noticed when you adjusted the string height, you used a screwdriver to change the height of the bridge. I've seen other videos where they turn the bridge thumbwheels. Are they both the same? Thanks
@ManotickGuitarTech
@ManotickGuitarTech Жыл бұрын
Usually I slacken the strings to raise them -you dont need to slacken them to lower them. Screwdriver or thumbwheel - whatever is easier on your fingers.

Thank you for sharing this.....probably one of the most useful I've seen for setting up my 335 Pro. Followed you step by step and got pretty good results. Just a few questions? I am certain the nut slot needs to be filed on multiple strings. Is this something a novice should attempt (assuming I had the proper tools)? Also, over time I have developed the infamous ABR-1 Tune-o-Matic "Bridge Buzz". Only Low E fretting 7th and higher. Nothing on open strings. Perhaps it can be adjusted out.....? You mentioned in another post you replaced this on your ES-335 DOT. Was curious which bridge replacement you went with (i.e. Gotoh, Tone Pros, Faber)? Appreciate any advice you might have... Thx
@ManotickGuitarTech
@ManotickGuitarTech Жыл бұрын
You can tackle eh nut slots - just go slow and take a little at a time. Tone pros would be a good choice for a replacement bridge... just check the specs first against your actual bridge.
@vegaslowrider3634

Very happy with TonePros bridge on this. Big improvement in clarity and sustain. Probably should have replaced the stoptail as well....(next time). I took it to a Tech to take care issues with nut. Everything is sounding very good. Thx again for the advice. Enjoying your videos, learning a lot!!!

My opinion swung back and forth during this video between being totally put off the guitar by the issues but then seeing that really there wasn’t much wrong with it and maybe the owner gave up a bit easily given that the strings weren’t even stretched fully. I suppose the main gripe would be with the retailer who claimed to have set it up. I suppose it’s unreasonable to expect the frets to be completely level in a $500 guitar, would be different if it was the Gibson version. Overall I think I still want one of these to fill the semi/hollowbody gap in my guitar collection. Thanks for the informative video

I just bought one a couple weeks ago, the retailer I bought from set it up perfectly. Nice low action, great fret work, and I really like the pickups. I think the retailer is definitely at fault here.

“When I play it in the playing position, I’ll get the same results.” That’s actually not the case. When the guitar is set on the neck rest, you are getting just a vary slight bit of neck relief due to gravity and the weight of the guitar body. It’s subtle, but I’ve seen it cause some slight issues after making adjustments. Not often, but it has happened. Just my 2 cents. I think this is a great video though! And I ended up getting the sunburst. 😊
@ManotickGuitarTech
@ManotickGuitarTech Жыл бұрын
True - but the variation is so small as to be negligible. The key is the do your setups the same way every time so you have consistency, that's all... whichever way you prefer. Thanks for watching and I hope you have subbed to my channel?

I’ve just got the same guitar in red. The tuning issue i have is the tuner post distorts towards the body of the guitar, the tuner knob is hard to turn then there is a click, the post flicks back to upright, it is then possible to get the string in tune.

I had same guitar...had tuning and intonation issues... and muddy pickups. I didn't want to deal with it and spend more so I sold it. Too many other guitars that you don't have to deal with that... these issues seem to be common on these...

do you work on fenders I have a telecaster that I really like but it string e does not cross pick up exactly so sound is slightly less on the string.
@ManotickGuitarTech
@ManotickGuitarTech 4 ай бұрын
That probably is not the issue- I would look at the nut and makes sure the string is seated properly and able to resonate better. Minute variation over the pole piece does not affect volume.
