Electronic pioneer Gary Numan, notorious for hits such as 'Are 'Friends' Electric?' and 'Cars', has had a influential career that has spanned close to four decades. His music continues to be an inspiration to artists across genres and eras, having released 22 studio albums.
We spoke to him at bluedot 2018, where he gave us insight into how his music career began, if there may be life elsewhere in the universe and what he would say to those extra-terrestrials.
bluedot is an award-winning weekend of discovery at the grounds of the Jodrell Bank deep space observatory. Set against a backdrop of the iconic Lovell Telescope, bluedot combines a truly stellar line-up of music with a ground-breaking programme of live science experiments, expert talks and immersive artworks.

I met Numan on his 1998, 2001, and 2015 tours...the way he talks to you in that unassuming, chill, low key humorous way is EXACTLY the same way this interview is.!

A very genuine person in the music business. Answers questions, without trying deflect the question, or make himself look better with the response. Vastly, vastly, underrated, for reasons beyond why, maybe the next few years will be Gary's', and they will be thoroughly deserved.

I love the way Numan's evolved from the cold, android vibe of his earlier days into this really warm, genuine and humble guy while still delivering some top notch dark electronic music (I hate using the term 'industrial').

I just went and saw Gary Numan here in Colorado recently and he put on a great show. I can't help but feel some of his 90's industrial type sound has become cohesive and really solidified.

its actually a hairpiece that is glued on. they shave the top of the head like a monks and measure and apply the hairpiece. gary lost his hair back in the 80s
@peakyparttimers9362
@peakyparttimers9362 5 жыл бұрын
Darren Taylor gary was losing his hair in his 20s he had a hair transplant but it wasn't successful and he wanted density. So he ended up wearing a wig. It's too big to be a hairpiece it's a wig. There no hair line and it's still false at the back so it's a full lace wig. Don't get me wrong he's a legend but it is a wig.

Cars... What was you actually thinking about when you wrote it..
@SpeccyMan
@SpeccyMan 5 жыл бұрын
I believe the song relates to an incident where he was being attacked and sought refuge in his car. "I was in traffic in London once and had a problem with some people in front. They tried to beat me up and get me out of the car. I locked the doors and eventually drove up on the pavement and got away from them. It's kind of to do with that. It explains how you can feel safe inside a car in the modern world... When you're in it, your whole mentality is different... It's like your own little personal empire with four wheels on it.”
