Fished over 12 hours casting lures for kingfish and Tuna. decided to switch over to live bait for a little break. took out a live bait about a 100m from the rocks and after 45 minutes of being in the water it got smashed by a big Tuna, was a big splash in the water when it first got hit. A heart pumping fight that ended in my 100lb leader giving up.
I will be back for more next week so stay tuned.
Hope you guys enjoy the video

Caught a few long before this channel so I know this was a tuna run.. was so disappointed at the fact that my 100lb leader gave up. I needed to tighten the drag a little to gain some of the 300 or so meters that I’ve lost but that’s fishing.. you land some and you lose some 🤙

I always adjust the drag, before I send out the bait. Once you start playing with it at the fight, sometimes you can over do it, putting way to much pressure on the line. Anyway it's live and learn, I feel your pain, it's gut wrenching, next time.

The only gripe I have with this reel is the weight, but that goes with the size of the reel kzfaq.infoUgkxM68VkfsQhHaabDce1IwOCXuvumcpbZ_k . I brought this salmon fishing up in Oswego, NY. I coupled it with a Cabela's Whuppin Stick. I had no problem pulling in a 14lb salmon. I will probably use this for surf fishing this summer and downgrade to a 3500 series Battle II next salmon season to save my wrists. All of the operations are butter smooth and the bail is nice and thick and has a solid flip to it. Everything about this reel is sturdy and strong. The drag system held up to the salmon and was also super smooth. I did use a scale to set the drag properly before going out to the river and this worked out tremendously. A bunch of other guys on the river would hook up and snap almost immediately. Just because you have a good drag system doesn't do anything if you don't set it correctly.

Sorry about the late reply and couldn’t agree more mate. However the weight on the 5500 isn’t too bad but in saying that doesn’t mean I can stand and cast it for 2 hours straight! It does have a solid drag but where I was fishing you really need to pump this fish in.

When I switch from plugging to live bait, I tend to jump the leader to like 300# mono or just wire.. love the video, hope 2020 brings all of us your kind of hookups m8 :)

How many meters deep are you at 100m?....The same thing CUT a 80lb WAHOO!?? 50lb braid in exp5500/650grs, what model and meters line do you run?......with 100m out, maybe it falls short of braid(I have this size but the BG 5k). I would have to go up to the bg6500(better catalina) or lighter(for spinning) I can think of Azores90-14k(or new cedros)

As far as I know the Saltist 6500 LTD max drag is ~35ish lb. I think it's pretty unlikely you had a clean snap of a 100lb leader even if it was knot failure. I think probably sharked but who knows. Cool vid

Was the clean cut just above the hooks? If so it might have been a big shark. I think that tuna leave a bit of abrasion at the end of the line, same with reef. Just a theory, might be wrong. But great video and well done on even hooking something so big. Not too much big fish get hooked down here off the land
@BoltImpact
@BoltImpact 3 жыл бұрын
Jamie Doherty Thanks mate 😀 yeah was a clean cut but I recon my leader cut off from the pressure where the hook knot was or I got sharked. I saw the splash when the squid first got hit and it wasn’t a shark take or a shark fight but I could be wrong mate. I was very unlucky and still breaks my heart every time I see it haha.. hopefully next time I have better luck. Thanks for watching mate 😀

Damn man this video really blew up! I have watched this video a dozen times now just to come to a conclusion. Main species it could have been are shark, kingfish or tuna. My thoughts are on kingfish or shark because it didn’t have those major quick head shakes like a tuna does, and kings loveeeeee squid. Either way it was big and 100lb has no match for it. Next time you give it a go try 150lb+ leader. It’s best to go heavier but not to heavy where more finnese fish might get suspicious. Also if you respool the expo use a marker at around 150-200 meters of line left and mark a whole 10 meter section as a indicator of when you lock you’re drag up for real. Also don’t use a knot to hold the second hook in because it can get super weak if it’s that, many other options like split shots, running hooks and hook stoppers are much stronger. Other then that sick hookup and hopefully we can get over this corona crap and go for a spin together🤙.
@BoltImpact
@BoltImpact 3 жыл бұрын
Hey mate haha yeah man video did go wild and I only wish I had landed it. We were actually fishing for kingfish but we know that bluefin tuna make a run through the area and when I had the ballon out about 200m the fish launched the squid out of the water on the attack and I could have sworn it was a bluefin, what made me even more sure was that I’ve had these same fights with tuna before but not to this extent. I just think I got sharked. I usually do a running second hook but didn’t think I was going to hook a monster haha. The reel had about 500m I took the balloon out about 200m and at one stage I recon I had about 80m left and it didn’t feel Like it was going to stop any time soon so I had to keep on applying pressure.. that was 50lb braid but I now have 60lb breaking at 80lb on it and I did mark the last 50m. I think your right 150lb leader would’ve been perfect and that’s what I’m going to do next time specially for live baiting where I don’t really need a smooth cast out of the guides. Hopefully this crap is over mate and we’ll T up a few casts 😀

It’s a Saltiga mate and only applying less than 50 percent of its drag so it will do it all day everyday for many years.
