Rallying may still be going strong today, but taking a look back to the eighties reveals just how crazy and off the leash rallying could get. But while the cars, courses and drivers were some of the best ever seen, a number of problems began plaguing the competition as it evolved, which eventually led to it being cancelled. Join me as we jump back in time and find out what happened leading up to 1986.

If you didn't already know, this is a reupload. I made this originally back in mid 2019 when I was much less experienced and knowledgeable, so there may be things outright wrong or bits of editing that looks awful. I wanted to leave most of it untouched as I know some of you loved this video for what it was. Can I just say that I've gone through the videos on your channel and I'm working my way through watching every single one at the moment. My opinion?? Absolutely bloody amazing. Brilliant. The quality is top notch. Can I ask for a cheeky favour though?? Some F1 videos about the late 1980's and very early 1990's stuff. Please?? I'll be your best friend!!! Lol 😂, seriously its a great channel. Thanks.

@@mrkipling2201 Thank you! As for the F1 videos, I do have a few ideas for future projects, the main problem is finding something unique to cover as it is a rather well covered topic here on KZfaq (my strongest idea was looking at certain drivers as part of a larger series of motorsporting racers).

@@JackohMotors good point mate. Maybe a video on F1 crashes that foreshadowed a fatal crash. Such as Piquet, Berger, Alboreto at Tamburello before Senna. Also, possibly a video about the De Angelis crash at Paul Ricard. I've not seen anyone cover that really at all. Just a couple of thoughts, I wouldn't want to tell you how to do things, the quality is brilliant which proves you're video ideas are top notch!! Thanks again.

They still do it ‼️🤦 and it really pisses me off.. like why are u standing all gathered right by or literally on the road knowing drivers aren't on a traditional track but still pushing their cars to limits.. I don't know if I'm an asshold for thinking or feeling this way but I have little to no remorse for fans or spectators that do ignorant shit that puts themselves and other spectators lives in danger and the drivers and Co drivers as well.. rally is probably my favorite form of racing and think rally drivers are the best or most skilled drivers in the world but I wouldn't put myself close to where I can even possibly just get hit by small rocks or a relatively big rock that could come flying at my face or hit one of my eyes.. like as fast as these guys be moving now and in the group b era even getting getting hit by Rocks or anything on the courses the cars can hit u with is gonna hurt like a mf.. and it irks me when drivers or the sport gets blamed for people's ignorance

....and make it out of thin aluminum, then later remove the protective skid plates under for weight savings. No floor at all, gastank was the floor.

Henri Toivonen certainly was experienced rally pilot. Henris father said that difference between Henri and others were the style Henri drove. Henri would go full on from the very first moment and if he crashed, then he would slow down. Others did the excatly the opposite. He also is still youngest RAC rally winner, and was the youngest WRC winner until 2008. He also won with every car he drove, Talbot, Porsce, Lancia, Opel, Simca, Sunbeam, Lotus. Even today, even thought he never won a personal world title, many consider him to be the best pilot in WRC. Markku Alen, his team mate with Lancia, said he cant drive the S4 like Henri, he is too afraid of it.

Awesome vid my friend. Subbed. Group B is insane. I remember being 9 yrs old and watching the RAC at the course. The engine sounds forever burned in my brain. The waste gate of the Quattro and the bravery of the drivers was mesmerising. I have some models are the cars I saw that day. Unforgettable.

Toivonen fully understood the dangers. At rally Monte Carlo, he spoke about the car sliding on tarmac and rear brakes malfuncioning. He was a rally driver, a competitor.

Lancia were cursed at the Rally of Corsica in the Group B era. Bettega being killed in a crash at the 1985 race, then Henri Toivonen a year later at the same rally, along with Sergio Cresto, his co driver.

Bettega was killed in 1985. In the Lancia 037. It sounded like it was mentioned in the 1986 season bit.

Stupid crowds and homologation requirements doomed it, needs to be fenced in 100 yards off at least. Homologation rules are stupid too, instead of making 1000 cars BEFORE they can compete, they could have put more of a budget into a fully fleshed out, SAFE, competition car, then build 1000 cars when they win or something.

7:56 the Lancia Delta S4 could easily have been the greatest Group B car of all time. If only that crash at Corsica didn't happen....

So originally All the Content from: Duke Video that was in the original upload was the reason why it got Copyright claimed. If you didn't see the original then other than clip's from Duke Video that was removed and changed it's still original and voicetrack is not changed

Im a conspiracy theorist and I think the end of group b had less to do with safety and more to do with its popularity. Being more popular than f1 is a definite no no for any race discipline. They could have madenit safer but scrapped it and f1 became the most popular race sport again.

Group-B didnt fail, but it did die early. Group-B was a huge success however, attracting so many manufacturers and talented engineers and drivers. It was a huge success if anything, and the fact the majority of motorheads accross the world respect it so much even 40 years later is almost unparalelled.
