Best Tactical Comms Setup for the POORS?

Historically, active hearing protection with the ability to run comms has been an expensive affair with headsets costing $700 - $1200.
While these military style headsets are nice, do you really need to spend that much money to run a basic Baofeng radio? No, you do not.
Today I'll be going over my budget tactical comms setup utilizing a basic Howard Leight headset, and showing that running comms doesn't have to cost you an arm and a leg.
Enjoy!

Something else that works really good. If your Boafeng speaker/mic has a 3.5 Jack, you, you can use the police style plastic listen only tube ear piece. Then you just wear your cheap walkers or Howard Leigh’s over that. U still have ambient noise amplification, you have radio audio coming directly into one ear and u have a chest/shoulder mounted mic/ptt.

DEFINITELY check out the Tigrett outdoors “shoot move communicate system”. It connects a baeofang to a set of walker razors (can also use it with ear buds, vehicle aux port, anything else with a 3.5mm input) - the PTT is super low profile and more durable than other budget options. I went down the rabbit hole searching for the perfect budget comms setup and when you consider the versatility and functionality of the Tigrett system along with a baeofang - it cannot be beat. The radio, tigrett, and pair of walkers can all be had for about $100 - there’s no other option with that capability for that price. I have 3 and zero problems with any of them

There's a really good book if you wanted to dig more into comms, written by a guy by the handle "NC Scout". Book is called The Guerrilla's Guide To The Baofeng Radio, the paper back is like 25 bucks on amazon and it basically gets you into comms from a grunt's perspective. That is to say it's not super theoretical or heady, it goes over the UV5R's functions and then goes right into practical use. Beware, there is a knock-off copy on amazon too, the one you want has an M81 camo background and is written by NC Scout. I highly recommend it as a starting point, you'll go from zero to dedicated comm guy in your range group

General class ham here. You can have fairly secure comms without encryption and your encryption wont save you from me picking up your signal, direction finding it, and jamming your frequency with 250w of K-pop. Learn the basics first, add bling when you become proficient.
@josephthomas8318
@josephthomas8318 Ай бұрын
Encryption is just one level of security. You can still stack other more basic levels of security on top of each other and have an effective comms plan with even very basic equipment. Your skill as an operator and understanding of RF trumps everything else. And NO you dont NEED a license. I just got mine because im genuinely interested in RF theory and it helps to learn the rules if you want to dabble outside of them.

It's important not to get stuck in an echo chamber. You see this stuff on SM all the time, but in reality normal people don't care about comms and there's nothing you can do to make them care. I've been on deployments where each 3-4 man team was issued BOTH a dedicated ATAK phone AND an ATAK enabled radio, and using either of them was literally pointless because few of the ASVAB waiver lowest denominator NPCs were able to learn the user interface, and the couple that could didnt bother to keep them charged. Then one day it dawns on you that you have zero need for long range comms because you dont have anyone to talk to outside of your squad anyway.

I guess you've found the noble UV-5R holds up well enough in weather. I've heard of people in the pacific north west shit talk the UV5R saying it doesnt hold up in the rain. I might end up getting the Baofeng AR152 which is basically a UV5R with a 10x massive battery, a water resistant housing, larger screen and larger buttons for use with gloves. Oh and if you have a 3D printer you can 3D print those button protectors and hand them out to all your homies

The baofengs are a great starter radio. Easy to program and use. I suggest only getting the uv5r because it's basic and gets the job done. If you want to upgrade I personally use a tyt 800d and programs like a uv5r. Antennas are the first thing you have to upgrade. For MSW I find uv5r the best for the money. And as the one who programs everyone's radios on the East Coast events they are the easiest to program.

I've been on the fence about getting the current models, or waiting... just not looking to spend even more than the current ones cost. I don't know how it will stack with the current Supreme X Pro's, but it hasn't sounded like the Sordins had been updated a whole lot, hence their departure from MSA in order to do so.

If you are running a headset like Peltors those headsets use dynamic mics. Dynamic mics require an amplifier or the mic will be very quiet on other peoples radios. On the PRC 152/148 ect the amplifier is built into the actual radio. On cheaper commercial radios there is no built in mic amp. Therefore if using a military headset that has a dynamic mic you usually need to use an amped PTT. Cheaper headsets like those walkers use electret microphones. Electret microphones are self powered, therefore do not require an amplifier. if you have a military headset and do not want to buy an expensive amplified PTT you can also buy a Peltor brand electret mic and use that with the military headset. This would allow you to purchase whatever cheap PTT you like and use the peltors.

You buy peltors for the name brand and “operator” status. I buy peltors because online guides can help fix my comm setup problems because of how common peltors are due to the military. We are not the same
