Hi Again!!! ----- Sorted my previous question - the image was a 16bit and I converted it to an 8bit and bingo the Filter Gallery is no longer greyed out. Fabulous to have the answer to so many questions at the touch of a button -- and at 73 I am very much aware that there was no such thing when I was a youngster so in my learning element now - proving it is never to late to learn!!

I've been trying for quite sometime now to get the look of a realistic illustration and all I've been able to do is an obvious PS manipulation. I need to turn my photos into media I can better use in a variety of art projects. I've been experimenting with a variation of Cut out/Oil Paint/Find Edges sometimes with the Watercolour filter added and the results have been....meh. THIS looks so much more realistic that I will be trying it this weekend! Thanks yet again Marty! Have a wonderful holiday and here's to a better year!

Voice drops out at 4:15 for about 10 seconds, but thankfully due to the way you do your videos, with captions etc; it was easy enough to follow. Thanks Marty

Nice tutorial again, thanks. Every time I use the oil paint filter the picture turns to greyscale. Any idea why this happens?

Go to Image > Mode > RGB color, 8 bits/Channel

Once the photo is converted into a Smart Object, you can replace it with a different photo. PS automatically applies the filters to the new photo. Just double-click any Smart Object to open its immediate source. Once it opens, if there's another Smart Object in the Layers panel, double-click it open its source. Keep doing this until you've arrived at the original photo. Paste your other photo above it in the Layers panel and then close its tab at the top (.psb file). Keep doing this until you've reached the final composite.

Hi :) I have CS5 but not oil paint filter and while a lot of Google suggestions told me to get Pixel Bender, it doesn't seem to be available anymore. Is there anywhere else to get it or can I jsut leave that step out and hope for the best?

Yeah, as far as I know, Pixel Bender is nowhere to be found. Just do it without the oil paint filter.
