Three weeks after this Red Rum won the Scottish National again off top weight. 1974 was his best year. It’s pure conjecture but that year he was probably good enough to finish in the first three in the Gold Cup had he been in it.

I was lucky enough to be at Aintree that day. Rewatching it today I have a better appreciation of Brian Fletcher's brilliant ride. He pulled Red Rum's nose up off the ground when the great horse made a mistake about 8 fences from home. What a thrill to relive it.

I suspect it didn't fit in with in with the preparation for his Grand National exploits usually only 2weeks apart,he did run in the 1971 Mildmay of the Flete Chase over 2 1/2 miles finishing 4th a full 2years before before his first Grand National, another factor could be the ground Red Rum was a good ground horse and in the main the ground at Aintree was predominately good,he didn't win anything with soft in the description,the courses at Cheltenham and Aintree although left handed are quite different Cheltenham is undulating and Aintree is flat.

@@davidmastin416 I remember Fred Winter had a pretty good 3m chaser at the time called Pendil whom most people thought was a a certain Gold Cup winner, maybe that might have had something to do with it. Yes totally agree, they have ruined the Aintree National Course and actually made it more dangerous as horses are travelling faster because they have no respect for the fences. A good hurdler could jump these fences now. Also i hate the modern tv coverage. they no longer have the iconic head on camera angle at bechers brook which was one of the most dramatic in sport.

+MsVanorak what I liked about these races are the top class quality at the top of the handicap - better than today and the romantic no hopers at the bottom that just wanted to make it round. Today its 40 identical runners 160 to 140 rather than a range of 170 to 110. The fact I can recall Friendly Henry - a maiden finishing 6th out 9 finishers in 1988 and yet can recall the 5th home this year says it all.
@teenoso4069
@teenoso4069 9 жыл бұрын
+MsVanorak I know there were qualifications for entry (being weighed) certainly from 1979 but as you said not sure about 1974. For example, in 1981, you had to be a winner of a chase valued at £2,500 (equivalent to £15k) today. Thats pretty classy. 1984's field was a very good one indeed drawn from 141 entries and 80 left at the 5-day decs stage. Today a first season chasing maiden can still run if placed at 3 miles plus and rated 120. Meanwhile a 2 miler can finish a distance 4th in a 3 mile race and still run based on a 2 mile rating. We also know the handicapper is quick to raise weighs and slow to lower a horse leading to weigh inflation over the years. I hear some say this is about 12lbs over the last 25 years. Stephen's Society was the first from the UK to win there in over 50 years. Trained by WA Stephenson, he and Collins were successful with Credit Call in the 70s too. I think Chris Collins is still around in industry today.
@teenoso4069
@teenoso4069 9 жыл бұрын
+MsVanorak That would be 1970 and Gay Trip's year? That year Derek Scott's ride on Villay - a horse he owned and trained too was real Corinthian spirit. Does Derek Scott still train today? Im sure I saw a D Scott with similar colours to Villay running in 2014-15. It was Josh Gifford's last ride that year too. Of course in 1968, American Tim Durrant rode Highlandie aged 68 to finish. That was the spirit at the time with him and the Iron Duke, John Carden et al just happy to have a go. That said, some of the rule changes are welcome - if only to prevent the likes of David Pitcher riding. I know a little about the late 70s onwards.

Sadly, I no longer feel the excitement I did. Its no longer the special race it was and I dont want to see horses breasting the fences with risky speed. If whats become just another long distance race was scrapped I would not miss it as I would always have my memories and videos of how it was devised to be. The first 6 fences had the job of eliminating 25-50% of the field before 1st Canal. Its lost that job as the powers that be think its better to keep horses running into traffic problems and jumping more fences at speed.

How do they name horses? After the first thing they see?
@richardjames712
@richardjames712 3 жыл бұрын
Usually the name is registered by the breeder and the name can be anything, providing it is 18 letters or fewer (including spaces) and isn't in some way offensive. Often (sometimes) the names are inspired by their parents names. In this case: Red Rum's sire was called QuoRUM, his dam was MaRED. Clever. See also Desert Orchid: sire Grey Mirage, dam Flower Child.

thanks for that chatham, must admit the 74 race was a classic, only those dreadful side angles at bechers spoilt the race, 2nd time around the cameraman doesnt seem to know where to point the camera, they used those angles from 71 to 77, and then brought them back around 2010 thank god the bbc dont film the race anymore

+George Partridge (Bykerbullet) Now I understand. You are one of those "animal lovers" who do not care about the horses, you just jump on the bandwagon to whine about people who have more money than you. Class warfare, not animal welfare is what you are about. You see, you could have objected to the fact that horses are sometimes killed while racing without mentioning money, but you couldn't help yourself. Your envy of the "money gods" was just too strong. You nasty, envious little man. You do not care about horses at all.
