They could do the translation in the correct order, and actually translate it correctly. For example: "Elsker, elsker det og tenker, på vår far og mor." is translated to: "Love her, in our love recalling, those who gave us birth." You are probably Norwegian so you probably know that the correct translation should be "our father and mother" and not "those who gave us birth". I don't think this version is any better than the direct translation, and it better keeps the context of the song IMO.

I am born and live in Germany but my family move to Norway every year in the holidays since i was 4 or 5 years old. So in my whole childhood i stay in Norway for around 3 to 4 years and i belive the last time i travel to Norway as a child, i lost something in the woods or on a mountain. Wonderful anthem from a beloved country! Americans love Norway, for many reasons. First of all, many Norwegians came to America, and they made it better, as immigrants usually do. Norway also inspires the world with its history, geography and long, deep sense of human decency.

Pfff, this translation is very different from the song- like, dude, you're supposed to TRANSLATE this, not make it a beautiful poem! I get that directly translating it wouldn't be as romantic or as poetic, but come on. We're proud of our national song as it is, and it'd be pretty great to see an accurately translated version!

The problem with translating ANY song lyric from one language to another, is that too many things have to lineup, that can't. First off, the number and accenting of syllables would have to exactly match the notes and the rhythm. Good luck with that. Ditto with any rhyme scheme. The rhyming words at the ends of lines in couplets, or alternating lines, or whatever, will never rhyme in their exact translations, except by (very) rare coincidence. So those who make it their business to translate these beautifuls songs for us need us to cut them some slack.
