I've owned my Suzuki VSTROM 1000 for 5 years now. While I love the bike, and no bike is perfect, the VSTROM has a few initial quirks and some long term pet hates that rear their head after long term riding. Listen along as I outline my top 5 hates of the Suzuki Vstrom 1000.

I've got a 2014 and you nailed it. This was a hard bike to fall in love with... but it's just so damn good! It has never failed me in even the smallest way... totally bulletproof. Its the engine for me... the feel, the torque, the vibe. Its addictive! It rides on rails and puts up with some hard bullshit from me. Its definately got some quirky ergononomics but Im completely used to it now. Great review thanks.

I got my motorcyclelicense 2 years ago. Bought a new Versys 650 SE GT which gave backpain. Traded it in after 8 months for a new Honda CB650R. Loved that bike but it has highfrequency vibrations which gave me two golferselbows. Beginning of this year I tried a VStrom 1000 and it was an instant fit. No more pains and aches, so bought it. I can easily do 600 km a day with my old body and step off the bike like I rode it for 10 km. Only things I changed for the buffeting were the mirrors and windscreen. Like you I will never get rid of the Vstrom. Love that bike for the riding pleasure, looks I don’t care about.

Blue Marble Rider! Thanks for a great vid! I own a Vstrom 1050xt and I have to say, I AGREE 100% with you when you say that people who bash VStroms HAVEN'T ridden them. I love my bike. Fortunately for me, I don't have the pesky buffeting issue with my windscreen, I guess I'm about perfect height before it becomes a problem.

My DL1000 2002 (first registered 2004 for some reason) is the best bike i have ever had and been riding it now for 8 yrs. It goes where i want when i want in any weather and never complains. I do all my own mods from hand guards, fog lamps, heated grips and gear selector sensor. I service it as and when required and is as shiny as a new pin. The first time i saw it was in the middle of a long row of bikes, i couldn't see the front of it but for some reason decided there and then that it was for me. Never regretted it. Will say though i do not like the beak on newer versions, the old strom has a singular look. Once you ride one you definitely know what you've been missing. I'm in my late 60's and will probably pass this bike on to my youngest when it gets to heavy for me, thats a long way off yet though. Loved your vid and subscribed.

Completely agree with your assessment, I have the same 2014 model in white. I don't mind the clutch. I added a Black Widow exhaust (under $400 CA to my door), makes it sound mean. I currently have Shinko 705s on it and have ridden this bike off pavement extensively on logging roads, ATV and snowmobile trails, no problem! While its no 250lb dirt bike it will certainly surprise you with what it can do. And when you get back to the asphalt its simply outstanding. Great bike, great price, incredible value for money.

My up list: 1.Excellent Suspension/Damping 2.Decent Comfort 3.Great Chassis/Handling 4.Good Power 5.Excellent Brakes 6.Excellent intuitive easy to read display. Neutral list: 1.Looks

Hi Blue Marble Rider, must say I’ve watched most of your reviews, and find them very honest, real world, just like the V Strom 1000. I owned a 2018 GT model and changed to the new 1050XT. Was wondering have you rode 1 yet ? Totally agree with you on the top 5 hates, but there is so much more to endear you to the V Strom. I put 11.5k miles on mine, never missed a beat, fuel economy was excellent, 55+mpg, and it could roll along with 2k revs in 4th gear 2up whilst touring, or mix it with other bikers packing more bhp. Great chassis and superb brakes, you could make a top 10 of the loves for the V Strom 1000. The question is Why did I change ? I test rode the 1050XT and loved it. Has all the same virtues in a more polished guise, the ride by wire throttle in my opinion, is the stand out feature, plus I love the new colour scheme in orange and white, bit of a sucker for that kinda thing. There’s some positive reviews, and some negative on the 1050, I think Suzuki have taken the right approach, if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Maybe it’s not a big enough upgrade to tempt current owners from their 1000’s, but it is still an exceptional value for money motorcycle. It’s great to know that you are going to keep yours and ride the wheels of it, fair play, and keep the vlogs coming, they’re the best 👍

So . . . ‘Stroms have a face only a mother could love, suffer from tractor-clatter and a Schwarzenegger clutch assembly, come with a wonky OEM windscreen and is condemned by self-righteous new ‘n shiny bedazzled moto journalists. Yep, kinda agree with that analysis, and yet . . . it’s hard to resist the ol’fart’s more intangible charms and very tangible low cost of ownership.

I have about 10000 miles on mine now. I love the engine and the way it rides however it needs some mods to make it a comfortable ride. It seems like they designed the bike around a 5'8 rider. If you're tall, you'll need a windscreen, tall seat or footpeg lowering kit, bar risers and a nice helmet at the least. In it's stock form, the bike is extremely cramped and gets uncomfortable after a couple of hours. I didn't really notice this until I got a wr250r and realized how long I could ride it without getting uncomfortable. Vstrom is an awesome road bike, just needs some comfort mods in my opinion.

Spot on. I had a 2017 1000. The stock windshield was horrible. I bought the same givi you have and it solved that issue. So I retire and downsize to a 2019 vstrom 650. For a few reasons. Insurance being one. Being retired on a fixed income one must budget. Lol. Ok here’s the point. I’m 5’10”. The stock windshield on the 650 is bloody amazing. I have owned 5 Vstroms. I was absolutely certain I was going to have to replace it upon purchase. But it’s perfect for me. I’m super impressed. Lol

I know what you mean about that agricultural sound of the V-1000. Earplugs fix that. My '03 had 50k mi. when I bought it for a good price. I wanted it for a long-legged bike to take to TX. I have a Honda CB1100 for in-town duties. I do the shift lever pre-load and the short stroke of the clutch lever to shift, and it reduced clutch effort.

Very cool video! I happen to not be bothered the least by your 5 dislikes. 1. I like the looks. 2. I love the sound, different to every other bike out there. 3. Not a problem operating the clutch in heavy traffic. 4. The windshield is actually perfect for me. I'm 5'7". 5. Little that the BMW owners knew, we can keep up easily with them on a V-1000. Now on to the 5 things I hate about it: 1. The fuel capacity: This bike is capable and comfortable enough to be ridden for a lot longer than the fuel capacity will allow you to. Too many stops for gas on a long trip. 2. Weight. If this bike was 50 pounds lighter, it would be anyone's dream bike of all time. 3. You have to lift the fuel tank in order to replace the air filter and spark plugs. That adds a lot of labor cost to those services. 4. Dual spark plugs: Each cylinder uses two spark plugs that are also unique and expensive. 5. The mirrors' adjustment system. You need to use tools to do it and it's counter-intuitive. // I realize we both love these, our bikes to death and will never swap them for anything else. No bike is perfect, but this one is a hidden gem. Rock solid. Let it be underrated, so that the price never goes up and other people can enjoy this wonderful machine. 👍🙂

I have a 2014 DL1000 that's been a great bike for my purpose, cross country mostly on secondary roads camping when possible. I agree with all five of your things, but have to comment on number 4, the motor sound at idle. When I first bought the bike, I asked the dealer if there was a problem with the engine, something had to be loose in there. I now describe it's idle as imitating a worn out sewing machine on crack cocaine.

I agree with every point you made (mine is 30K miles). Noise at idle- it's the clutch design, Stroms have a clutch that eventually leads to the "chudder", but until then it rattles away- 1050 has the same issue as well.

If you want a really good sound, change out the stock pipe for a Yoshimura 77 with the baffle removed. Absolutely brilliant sound for the big Vee, thoroughly recommend it. Personal taste when it comes to bike design (or design in general) is a really curious thing, I've always been a "big trail bike" kind of guy, and, unlike you and many others, I always loved the looks of the big trail Suzukis, from the old dr800 Big, to the 1st v-strom, the 2nd version is the one I like the less (still wouldn't keep me from buying one) and the latest version is also top. Here's my top of big trails design: "1 the Ducati mustistrada 1200s, pikes peak edition - my nº1 bike at present "2 All the big trail Suzukis - never owned one to my chagrin "3 the BMW gs800 (black and yellow) absolutely stunning looks, but a bit lacking on power+torque "4 the 2nd version of the Africa twin 750 the most beautiful of the XX century, but also a bit lacking in power (not so much in torque). had one back in the 90s. "5 the latest KTM 1290R, for the looks too, but mainly for the awesome machine that it is and that makes it look even better. "6 the GS1250 rally "7 All big trail Triumphs. I still have an old 900 Tiger and a 1050 tiger "8 the Kawasaki versys 1000, latest version (I had to include a Kawa in my top) " all other big trails "259 - the Honda varadero 1000, (I can say I owned from 1999 to 2008 the ugliest big trail bike ever made).

I can see you've thought this through! They've all grown on me, for sure, and there are times the strom catches my attention. My dirty little secret is that I like anything that looks Dakar/Rally like the old KTM 640 & the Tenere. Probably the most universally detested look, but as you say looks are subjective. That big barn door Dakar fairing has a curious effect on me. I'm guessing that if the new Nordrstom looks anything like the original mock up, we will both like it...a lot! Cheers.

Thanks a lot for this video. I ride the BMW F800GS since 10 years and the clutch sounds exactly as horrible as the clutch on the Suzuki SV1000s K3 I had have before this BMW. i´m a little bit dissapointed about this is an "production-gadget" on the v-engines of Suzuki in the newest generations too. But I miss the sound and the power of this great v-twin. I think I also will change back to Suzuki after my BMW expirience. The 1st gen. of the new V-Strom 1000 is an great bike without all the tft-screen rubbish and it haves the great v-engine with some fine modifications. Greets from the "Harz Mountains" in the middle of Germany.

It's such a good all round bike. The others in my stable are more desirable, and perhaps more fun, but they are not able to do so much, so well, and so comfortably. Therein lies the conundrum. If I sell the Strom, it will leave a hole which few other bikes can fill.

The 650 I hear is a well deserving bike, but we are more higher speed road oriented in our travels and with the factory hard bags, the bigger engine works well. Although we are not tall riders, 5-6 and 5-4, the turbulence from the factory screen is an issue. We moved the windshields to their highest positions and worked very well at that point. One thing that was interesting, the helmet design makes a huge difference! My shoei hornet is a wonderful helmet but reacts horribly to buffeting with the stock windscreen. Take off the visor on the helmet and the problem goes away. My older rf1100 works fantastic because of smooth profile. Hope this helps. Luckily parts for the stroms are inexpensive and everywhere leaving us riders with the ability to truely tailor the riding experience👍

Great feedback, Richard. I hear you about the stock oem screen: I noticed the same thing regarding lowering my visor on my un-peaked older helmet with the stock screen on the 2014 Vstrom 1000 - keep the visor up, and there was no buffet, but close it and buffet occurred. Very strange.

i have a 2016 V Strom 1000. As well as the rattly clutch sound, mine developed a distinct knocking sound at tick over. Clutch basket was replaced under warranty but still the same so they rebuilt the bottom end (under warranty). Still not sure what the actual issue was, the dealer had never come across this before on this engine and couldn't identify a specific fault, but it seems OK now, apart from still having the rattly clutch noise. Seems replacing one Suzuki clutch basket for another doesn't cure the rattly clutch experienced by many. Fair play to the dealer (Bridge Motorcycles Exeter UK) for dealing with it, and to Suzuki for honouring the warranty. I'd be interested to hear if anyone else has had the knocking sound which required my engine strip down, what is was and how it was resolved. Cheers
@BlueMarbleRider
@BlueMarbleRider 3 жыл бұрын
I've never heard of the knock before: sounds like something was mis-aligned or the cam-tensioner was not set or working correctly in the bottom end and corrected like you say - likely fortuitously - on the rebuild. The OEM clutch basket is a rattler; and new ones only last a few thousand km before making the sound again. There a many rebuilders out there who replace components with different springs, belville washers and remachine the gears with tougher metal. The chudder/rattle is present on all versions of the DL1000. They have made changes to the 2018 up and the subsequently to the 1050, but the 2018 was ineffective in reduceing the chudder/noise as the plate still moves and the inner bearing surface wears oval due to excess play and small surface. Werks Parts LLC will replace them with a wider bronze bushing honed to size - the gear gets more support. The 1050 I'm not sure about yet, but I suspect...no improvement. Mine is showing early signs at 36000km; and likely I'll send my basket away next winter. Cheers.

I've only done another 7000 miles since the warranty work (hardly any in 2020 and none at all since Christmas due to lock downs here) and so far I can live with the clutch as it is. I bought it for the upright riding position and for a comfortable perch for my wife but it's been great to ride whether on local country lanes or German autobahns.

I bought my V-Strom 650 (similar engine sound to your 1000) without ever being near one in real life. It doesn't matter why, but I just called the dealer and paid for it online. I was a Terminator 2 kid and I loved his Harley' sound. It was a v-twin, my bike had a v-twin. Smaller, true, but still... So I was expecting a gorgeous noise. You can't imagine my disappointment when I went to pick up my bike... That was no Harley sound! It has some kind of hissing, something whistle-like, on top of the V sound... I don't know if it's the air intake, the valves, some internal friction or what. That being said, after a couple of years, I can say that I love my bike very much. It's incredible how you can use it for everything and how well it does in every situation, also easy to maintain. But you can learn that only if you give it a chance!

Good review Screen is awful, Suzuki should just hand that part of the bike over to Givi (we’ve all got the airflow’s maybe Suzuki are on a kick backs ) Looks & sound are subjective, my 17 still sounds okay no clutch basket issues but that’s an easy fix if it does occur, it’s not a looker that’s for sure. The seat I find really painful so I purchased a gel Wild Ass seat cushion which works well. The headlights are appalling verging on the dangerous - Rigid Industry spots (D4’s) resolved that one. And it’s top heavy with a full fuel load, so you have to be careful moving it around off the bike. Clutch is okay on my 17, it’s not great but it’s not terrible in London traffic. I’ve also installed an SW Motech gear shifter (accommodate my big ass bike boots plus massive adjustability), together with Honda Gold Wing foot pegs - a direct fit. Keep the reviews coming 👍

I've fitted a pair of venom exhaust cans, it sounds brilliant and other traffic hear you coming. I also have a aftermarket taller screen which makes motorway riding much better. The one thing I do find very annoying about the bike is it doesn't like commuting in 20 mph zones as much of London is now. It cuts out and judders at this speed. A fuel injection mapping issue I'm told. I do know what you mean about the clutch hydraulic system being heavy. I rebuilt mine, with new seals, and its much better now. Thanks for the feedback, Micheal. I ran into a gen 1 rider the other day who said much the same thing. He had the clutch rebuilt and wouldn't sell his bike for the world. Cheers.

I am getting ready to start looking for a used V-Strom1000. Is there anything that can be done about the clutch issue? I ride in NYC most of the time - tons of start and stop. the clutch on my drz400 drives me crazy as it is...
@BlueMarbleRider
@BlueMarbleRider 3 жыл бұрын
Owners who ride the 17 on bike, are telling me that it is lighter than the 14-16 version, although I can't verify that. I have a friend with a DRZ400 and he complains about the heavy clutch too. Cheers.

got a 2018xt my everday commuter and country roads speedster. took windscreen off completly much much better. bugs suck but i find it way more comfortable and less distracting. bike loves to rev and she'll go hard. if only the gearing was shorter 5th and 6th gear be more useable. 21000km later still enjoying it. if anyones interested it loves penrite oil.

Jeah, the 650 xt is great. But i am too tall for the 650. Thats the only one reason,why i bought the 1050xt. And now i love the bike so much with all these little extras. Hill hold assistent is a incredible cool feature. Do i need it? No. Do i love it? Yes :-)

Recently i traded in my 2018 1000xt, for some thing different.ish!! However there is something reassuring about owning the vstrom. My biggest dislike was its name. I felt it never fitted the look or feel of the bike. Great chassis and brakes. Clutch baskets were known to rattle on the older bikes.maybe yours is affected. Likeable rider rattled me to with his comment. I would have no problem owning another .

if you don't like the sound you need a aftermarket exhaust

Not compared to my two other bikes: one is a cable clutch and the other hydraulic: both are single finger. My Vstrom's clutch has never been a single finger job; no complaints, but could be lighter.
