I will never break open my mint sets. I'm thinking my heirs will do that after I'm gone and I will just haunt the living daylights out of them. If they can make some really awesome money that is a different story. I try so hard to educate my sons and grandkids before I go. This was an eye opening video because I don't know what to do about them. As long as I'm alive they will stay in sets. ATB & GB

How could I not like this video!? I hit the like so hard my screen almost smashes, but seriously with me to see them silver or even non silver proof struck coins is such a temptation to take them out just to touch them but of course don't. And to divide a set is not really a wise thing in my eyes too. Really enjoyed this, Thank you

im 55 years old and got into this hobby kinda late but as they say better late then never i guess thank you for teaching us/me about the attributes and do's and dont's i have a couple sms mint sets and a lot of the proof sets from 69-2008 i know its not the complete set but i think the way i acquired them gives me the time to learn about each individual sets and what to look for as errors and varieties, i also have about 100 or so Kennedy halves varied years from 64 -2018 which includes some nice coins and some not so nice all in flips also have walking liberties Benji's, franklins seated dime from 1874. Im working on getting the mint sets now from early 60'sto present, maybe im crazy, but i really enjoy this hobby and these coins are special to me because now being 55 years old as a kid i never got an allowance so i guess you could say im amking uo for it now by giving myself hap[iness by collecting

I just broke down a 2009 uncirculated set and sold the 4 pennys for 40 dollars which is almost 3 times what I paid for the entire set. I just happened to find a gentlemen that wanted those for his collection and i have 6 sets from both mints so I didnt have a problem breaking one down to make a few bucks. Thanks for the info as always and have a great day brother.

I think it is 100% fine to break open mint or proof sets as long as you put them in some kind of special container. I would put them in air tight capsules. (Get ones that you can adjust the space inside to fit different coins)

I have the '51 - '55 original proof sets still in their individual cellophane envelopes, stapled together, in tissue and U.S. Govt. cardboard box. Some of the coin's are toning. I recently read that sulphur in the cardboard used for the boxes is causing the toning. Still, I don't want to break them apart but I'm having a difficult time finishing my Franklin album. The '54 and '55 proofs were easy enough to find cheap but the other's are selling for more than the sets cost me. I'm tempted to break them up and keep searching for the 1950. I'm hoping for another opinion.

As a fairly new coin collector, I buy the uncirculated mint sets and break them open. I put them in capsules and then add them to my pages. I do this because I am sure it is UNCIRCULATED because it is coming out of the plastic covering from the mint. I've run into problems where auctions or dealers have told me that the coin I was buying was directly out of a BU uncirculated roll only to find out later that it has been circulated. If a 1960 set is only selling for less then $10.00 then I don't see how the set is going to climb in value after 60 years of being released. However, I can see your point on the proof or silver sets. They do fluctuate in price all the time online and I think those sets should stay as a set. Thanks for the great video!

If your still interested in the answer to your question all I can tell you to do is go to Heritage auctions and look at their auctions and maybe sale through them. Heritage auction is the best place to sale your coin's. It would be best to have your coin's graded. But I'm just now learning how to sale their them myself. Good luck.

You can generally make money by breaking the set up and selling all the coins individually compared to just selling the intact set. That accounts for part of the reason people break open sets, the other reason is to cherry pick the better coins for sets or sending in for grading.

I enjoyed the mint set video. I am waiting for a 1971 mint set to arrive in the mail right now. I doubt that the half Dollar will be valuable because of who I bought it from. But I will have something that I didn’t have, uncirculated coins to enjoy. 😊

I did leave them in the original package but then I got some books for them and I enjoy looking at them in a book rather than opening a package every time. And they look a lot better out of that old plastic. I'm not planning on selling them but I think they look better in a book and it's a lot easier than opening all the different ones one at a time.

I break open the old ones in plastic sealed sheets but I keep them in my own collection. I feel like the plastic allows the coins to slide around and they are getting wear on them. Plus the plastic sometimes has holes in the ones I buy at garage sales and auctions and I don’t want them to be exposed to air and moisture. Anyway...my 2 cents. Lol!

For proof sets 68-onwards, I crack the set open if I have not had that set before. I put each coin in a 2x2, and then I place the 2x2 into a slot in the plastic page in my three ring binder.

I feel it depends on how modern the set is and what platform you are using to sell on, plus if it is a silver set vs a clad set.If you are selling on say "whatnot" and you have a modern silver quarter proof set, you can absolutely make more money cracking the silver quarters free and selling them individually. You might be able to get $35 for the entire set of 5-6 silver quarters where if you sell the quarters one at a time, you can get around $10-$15 per quarter so let's say you are working with 5 quarters you just turned $35 into upwards of $75. This is just what I've seen specifically on the whatnot live auction app, I can't speak for anything else. Like the maker of this video said everywhere else the doesn't seem to be much of a premium for these modern silver quarters but on whatnot I see them sell for a lot (relatively) on an individual bases as compared to in a full set.

I buy strictly post-1999 silver proof sets from my LCS's and online,. I crack them all out and put them into 2x2's as soon as I can, because I find that many of the silver coins will begin to develop some unattractive toning if left in the cases over time. Storage conditions may be responsible for the toning on some sets, because I have purchased sets from the early 2000's that are not toned also. I don't know if proof sets sell better if left complete in the cases or not, since I've never sold them that way, I sell off the individual coins, but likely they do sell better all together in the set, at least faster. I'm not in any hurry, and I know that I can make more money selling them individually, so that's what I do. I sell all this kind of stuff on Ebay, and it can take some time using a Buy It Now price, but eventually someone will come along and pay the price you are asking.

Here I s something interesting. The mint set coins are not the same strike as the business strikes. They share mint marks(P+D). If they are removed from the packaging they would loose value unless they are graded, and I have seen Slabs label them from an UNC set.

Yeah after selling my family collection which had a ton of clad proof sets, I vowed to stay mainly with silver proof sets as you will at least have a chance for the bullion to appreciate at times. I do get a proof clad set if a) they are offering extra such as the 2019 W Proof finish, b) it is cheaper than a silver proof set I think remains overpriced - the 2012 set, c) the clad set is simply beautiful or the denomination is only available in clad and/or the mintages are low for the US Mint (AI dollars rev proofs, 2012 clad proof quarters). I buy mint sets only in the hopes of having great specimens of business strikes and, if lucky, an interesting error.

Shouldn’t all you guys who say that you would never break open the proof and mint sets be glad if there are guys out there busting them wide open, as every time another one gets cracked into, that means that the set(s) that YOU have just got scarcer? And “scarcer” will eventually translate to “more valuable”-will it not? Now, I understand that you might not even still be around; perhaps none of us will be when the values on a lot of the proof and mint sets appreciate significantly. But does that really matter? The point is that the actions of the guys busting open the sets will eventually and gradually equate to a rise in values of the pieces that you are holding onto. Maybe it will be your children or grandchildren or great grandchildren who will benefit from that increase, but what’s wrong with that? Again, the point is that things are heading in the right direction for YOU (and yours) if I’m sitting in my hobby room busting open the identical item(s) that you are archiving.

I’ve been considering taking all the silver out of my sets and using the non silver coins to buy more silver. It’s a hard decision to make. I have a thought that when it’s time to sell that the economy might be such a mess that I’m only going to get silver value anyways and the rest would be worth less than it is today after beat down by inflation.

Well I think that speaks for itself really. But think there for a second. How many no mint mark dimes are still with their original set's and how much it would be worth in it's original proof set. My practice is to buy two proof sets and two mints sets every year. I keep one of each intact as a proof/mint set collection, and I break one of each out to put in coin albums. I'm not trying to make money with them in either case. Proof and Mint sets are generally a poor way to invest in coins unless you can afford rarities, which I cannot.
