When Bruce Iglauer dropped out of college and moved from Cincinnati to Chicago back in 1971, he just wanted to be near his favorite Blues artists. He never dreamed he’d wind up starting what was to become the biggest Blues recording company in the world! Like many of his peers of the 60’s, Bruce was deep into folk music. But when he heard Blues music for the first time at a folk festival, the directness of the music, the intensity of emotion, reached out and grabbed him.
For a folkie turned Blues freak, Chicago was definitely the place to go. Chicago was - and still is - the Blues capital of the world. The US city with the largest black population in America, people who left the cotton fields of the Mississippi Delta to find work up north, bringing their music with them. Bruce’s company - Alligator records - may be small by recording industry standards, but it’s a giant when it comes to Blues. In the movie we meet contemporary Blues greats such as Koko Taylor and Lonnie Brooks, but also relive magic musical moments with past Blues legends such as Hound Dog Taylor and Sonny Boy Williamson.
We also meet the “new kids on the block” a new generation of young Bluesbloods like Kenny Neal, Billy Branch, ad lucky Peterson, artists proud of their musical last and aware of their responsibilities for the future.
The Blues grew up in Chicago’s Black Southside and Westside ghettos, but artists are performing more and more in clubs on the white Northside where there’s money to be made. “The irony of it all is that while Alligator has helped Blues survive and reach a broader audience”, Bruce says, “we’ve also helped take the music away from its traditional environment. And when that hapens the music changes.”
But Bruce is convinced that Blues will always be with us. “Blues is a healing music!”, Bruce explains, “and as long as there’s a need to be healed, the Blues will live on”.

I’m in tears watching this! Many of these people became my friends during my four decades in music, and to see them so young and so full of “the blues”! As a founding member of the Canada South Blues Society, the Great Lakes Blues Society and the Bruce County Blues Society I had many many encounters with these amazing musicians! In fact, I looked after Lucky Peterson’s and Phil Guy’s eastern Canadian appearances, amongst others, for several years! The Blues in the Schools was near and dear to my heart. Peace

It's great to see companies like Alligator still promoting a true Staple of American music. The fact that it doesn't make any real money for themselves and the artists shows you how much love and belief they have in it. I'd rather see the integrity in something that's real than the alternative of all these shitty internet companies offering services to supposedly promote music when all they are interested in is taking money from artists that haven't got it. Great documentary. keep up the good work.

I did sound & lighting for a Lonnie Brooks outdoor show around '89 - '90 in Southwest Ohio. Nice to run across this film. This footage of Lonnie seems to be right about the same era, as his stage clothing & hat appear to be the same. I had a stage plot( a paper that shows the placement of band gear on stage) that I had him autograph. Unfortunately, I lost it between moves and now I got the Blues.

I'm in love, no idea if she'll accept the proposal, but, I'm so radically changed by loving that the blues I had, vanished... but if I get dumped, I'll feel so yuk, I'll surely be blue. If I survive to feel blue.

I'm sorry, she may be one hell of a blues singer, but Koko Taylor should never be allowed to lead the national anthem ( 35:23 ) again. Its not even about how she was off key half of the time. If you can't remember the damned words, write them down for God's sake. Have some respect for a song that commemorates all those who have given life and limb for our country. Was she drunk? That was cringeworthy.
