Very young but very impressive teacher! He laid everything for the learner. Make also a lecture on how to develop or structure a melodic phrase or sequencing of notes in just for example G chord played slowly.

I always recommend Peter Frampton's solo from Humble Pie's Natural Born Woman/Boogie. It was the 1st solo I'd found which spanned 3 positions, but also had a number of techniques I wasn't using so much at the time, such as held bends, double stop slides, 1st finger bends etc. Another good one is the solo in 'Long White Car' from Hipsway (@2.08). It's more funk/soul/blues, but the timing and construction is just so good, inc. double-stop hammer-ons, and a prefect out line. A lot of it is also finally about finessing the notes, which takes listening, comparing and trying different ways, until it sounds right. It's trial and error, and putting in the time!

Great advice! I usually start students off with an A minor blues (open position changes) where the progression is diatonic (apart from E turnaround). I think you’re correct, the dominant blues is tricky. It’s simple music but that doesn’t mean it’s easy to play

Another great book is the Modern Blues Soloing book by Josh Smith, a fantastic blues player, especially the shuffle.

I'm a fan of Ross. I have his book. In general, Modern blues is NOT blues anymore. Each song becomes a demonstration of finger excercises and how to play 1000 notes. Happy blues. No feeling, no melody. It's exhausting. Usually by the 3rd song I've had enough. Thankfully, I can find the old blues legends to get my fix.

Great tips and content. What do you think of the great blues players who don’t target chord changes? I think a balance of both is good. Sometimes following the changes too closely comes across as jazz-sounding. Cheers!

Would you say theres a difference between transcribing a song and loading a transcription up on something like Guitar Pro and studying from that? I find it pretty helpful since you can overlay scales and different modes and get an idea of things

What an excellent way to break it down in a personal fashion. Music is a common thing you hear, blues is especially something you feel, but it’s much harder to play well than I did for 50 years. Honestly, I suck at guitar. Other people thought I was amazing while improvising leads by ear, but that’s because I did a lot of what you did. Practiced bits and pieces of Gary Moore and Robin Ford, until I nailed the runs. Understanding them musically doesn’t happen on paper, and it barely happens while playing. It starts to connect in the mind. At least that was the way with me. So I was limited and unschooled but very flashy and soulful. Even my mistakes sounded good. (Bend a bad note into the right one) To me though, I sucked. Not even close to what you improvised here. You’re amazing man. I’m a has-been rocker with arthritis now but I was lucky in my days of being pretty good and fun to watch. Now I watch musical geniuses like you, spending way more time than I ever did in music, and it makes me smile. In the old days, we cheated. I played cheat chords and cheat leads like AC/DC. The crowd cheered. More of a show than actual music but nobody with a few joints and beers under their belts, felt like they were cheated. It was fun. But personally, to me, I cheated them. I could have been so much better if I’d just really focused on my music. To do that though, I’d suffer socially. It’s a trade-off and I chose my woman over music. Traveled the world and my music became something fun on occasion. Watching your videos, and I’ve been subscribed for years, I see one of the most amazing guitarists I’ve ever seen. You’re incredible man. I never focused on it like you have but I click on every recommendation on your channel, knowing I’ll hear guitarwork that’s just mesmerizingly good. At 60 years old, I won’t be learning how to do this, but I really love that you are doing this. Thank you.

The transcribe part can be analogized into : how do you speak a certain language if you don’t even know it. We learn from the speakers

"Neglect to think about the timing of those licks..." - Timing is even more important than worrying about the so called 'money' notes...

Listen to BB King. Lots of BB King. You don't need to know a single thing about theory (imo) to get good at blues guitar. So much blues is in the ear of the beholder. This is how you start incorporating modal changes that add great flavour. Your ear guides you more than anything else. There are very few "wrong" notes.
