When he walked up the minor scale and descended on the major scale in the same position... that alone sounded totally country to me. Really cool insight!

@@danieldonato Hey Danny, do you always ascend minor and descend major or do you mix and match to taste? I notice the notes in the scales resolve differently whether you ascend vs descend. I bought your pathways book btw!!

I know this comment is old but when he went back down in the major, it didn’t look like the major pent that in used to. I though for major pent you shift down the fret board, placing your pinky on the root note, then play the same patter to give you the minor pentatonic of that root note..
@weggiemiller41
@weggiemiller41 Жыл бұрын
@@RussC123 I think the pentatonic major scale you’re referring to is the relative major (so, if you were screwing around with the E minor pentatonic, and then shifted up to the relative major you would be in G major. I think what the guy in the video is doing is going back and forth between parallel majors and minors. So, in E, playing the E minor scale AND the E major scale. Hope that helps, my dude.

I just recently became a fan of Daniel a couple months ago - I truly believe this kid is going to be one of those musician's musician ...Like a Danny Gatton if you will?!.. His obvious work and practice aside, he's also one of those types w/a fantastic players voice (w/some high-lonesome qualities) that most are without. Your well described "masterpiece of conciseness" is what I'd refer to as a touch of an "old soul", of which here again most are without, but this kid just seems to have it!!.. Can't wait to see him live -

A truly marvelous lesson. I honestly expected to be bored to tears at the revelation of 'its major versus minor pentatonics', but the way you delved into that really made great sense, particularly overlaying of major and minor in the same position rather than thinking of the relative majos and minors. Yes more challenging but so much better for mixing the two flavors and mastering the fretboard. Kudos. Aloha.

Wow, so practical and simple. I have already mapped out the major and minor pentatonic shapes that are next to each other and will practice combining them a little each day. Thanks so much! I’ve also noticed that you can get a similar effect by playing in the Dorian mode and occasionally bending up to the major 3rd. Dorian + major 3rd has the notes of the major and minor pentatonic added together.

A few queries: I’m a bassist and a pianist and have been playing since I was 9 and 4 respectively (I’m 26), but I recently got into guitar. I bought myself a Gibson L-50 when I decided to get into the instrument at the end of last year and three days ago, as a birthday gift, my parents gave me a D-28, made 1981. I’ve been trying to cultivate a country sound, but it does sound extremely bluesy and when I lean more heavily into major with faster picking patterns it sounds like bluegrass, not country. Your advice is very electric specific, what advice would you give on this issue regarding acoustic guitars, both flat and arch topped? Also, this is all very lead-solo oriented. Do you have any advice for getting a country rhythm sound, using more complex harmony, it seems that once I start doing anything more “advanced” than basic triadic harmony (maybe a sus4 on the I) in root position or using chord progressions that are more interesting than basic variations on the I-V-vi-IV (like replacing the vi with bVII) or a I-vi-IV-V it loses it’s country character, even basic substitutions like bII7 for V or the use of dominant 7th chords in general completely de-countrifies the music. I want to make interesting music so I’m wondering whether anyone here has any advice about retaining harmonic complexity within the country music idiom?
