Multiplayer speedruns are absolutely fascinating to observe, adding a plethora of new levels of depth and complexity to already difficult speedgames. In this video, i'll be talking about a few of my favourite multiplayer speedruns, and why they're worth looking into!

‘Twice the players, twice the speed’ sounds like a zote precept. If only it did not conflict with precept 8: ‘travel alone’

It does not necessarily conflict with 8th precept. You just need to re-interpret it. "Travel alone" in case of 2-player speedrun just mean, that you should split up, *travel alone* and complete different parts of the progression 😂

this is actually a really cool concept and also try this i figured out that on xbox if you turn on 2 controllers but only sign one in, you can have 2 people controlling the same icon, try to beat hollow knight where both of you are controlling the same knight

The strat with pogoing eachothers nails is actually viable with 2 players! (I call it 'we pogo') me and my friends do it all the time and it's better than shade skipping!

Tbh, I’m not a huge fan of some of the direct interactivity, like pogoing off other slashes, but even without that, the synced item collection has a really cool impact on routing.

Technically Super Mario Galaxy speedruns are multiplayer. It’s usually just one person holding two remotes/joycons tho. Still really cool movement

I for one would love to see the multiplayer speedrun! Co-op speedruns are super cool to begin with, and I can't even begin to think about what it's going to look like in a game that allows you to do so much with a couple of sequence breaks.

Just fyi, a lot of the other categories also use the co-op mode in some sections to achieve some otherwise impossible jumps. And yep they also do that with their feet. They gotta have those crazy pinkymuscles 😂

That pogo flying can be done with 2 people. My friend and I have done it a bit just screwing around, and while we're not completely consistent, I think people could be.

As an Odyssey speedrunner myself, I can say that the 2 Player speedruns (at least of categories like Any%) are really cool, and are just now getting faster than the corresponding 1 Player categories because of the fewer quality of life features in the 2 Player mode. The future is looking strong.

The mario odyssey thing reminds me of something someone did in Rocket League. To perform a certain move (the stall), which required the simultaneous pressing of several buttons, they bound all those buttons to the spacebar, put the keyboard on the floor, and pressed it with their foot

I think there's a lot of untapped potential for multiplayer speedruns in highly non-linear games like HK, as there are so many interesting routing implications. Some folks in the TAS community have been discussing a multi-sync 106% (due to libTAS stability issues with later patches), which wouldn't have the parallel pantheon shenanigans, but has a ton of crazy routing in the overworld, especially when you mix in TAS-only strats like fury Baldur. Labbing the route gets a bit nuts, since any time you optimize a section, it may break the sync with other existing sections and eventually require some rerouting. (: One fun idea: shoptimal Shade Soul pickup with three knights where one picks up shop key, the next immediately buys e-key and the last enters Norman 2, all coordinated.
