“Naima” was written in 1959 by John Coltrane in honor of his first wife Juanita Austin, more often known by the nicknames of Naima (pronounced Ny-EE-ma) or Nita. 5:55 [KUVO]

There are many expert guitarists talking about technique here. There is no question that John is technically advanced but we need to recognize that he loves playing with Carlos. Ultimately it is about the feeling and not technique only. They are not competing with each other here...relax!!

Beauty is in the ear of the beholder. This is beautiful music to my ears. John McLaughlin brought the guitar virtuosity out of Santana for this DVD. It was wonderful to see Santana enjoying the pure Ness of playing the guitar again. John McLaughlin is amazing, a true practicing master.

Let's put it this way, John can't sound like Carlos and Carlos can't sound like John. But it's obvious that John experiments out of the box more than Carlos, And Carlos has acquired a uniquely recognizable style.

2 flat-out gods of hippie music - their 2 bands would have created the hippie movement, had there not been any. But credit hippies for the spread of fusion and world music - which happened because of events like Woodstock, and LPs like Bitches Brew. These 2 elegant gentlemen represent for the summer of '69. And for Coltrane obviously - himself the acid-experimenting Eastern influenced & meditational jazzman
@cactusjackNV9 жыл бұрын
Perhaps that is your perception. However, hippies were just riding the inevitable wave. I hear this song and it's directly influenced by Spain and their musical tradition. Fusion and world music were well alive in Europe and Brazil before 69. Even in the states. Herb Alpert was what you could call a fusion of Jazz and traditional music from Spain. Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66 is another example. But I'll give the hippies credit for knowing good far out music.

Santana is a popular icon of the guitar and as far as i know, a men who likes to study all the time all about his instrument and his profession, and, mm i understaind that there are cadence that only a Gitano and may be just a Spanish Gitano can understaind, but in my particular opinion i feel that Santana don´t get the hitch, the rhythm of the theme song either the cadences, therefore both are sailing in the same seas but in differents boats.
@israelolachea2594 жыл бұрын

Santana works this song first with Angélique Kidjo who created it in mina language from Bénin an african country. She did it for her daughter Naïma to help her to sleep. No so bad with that flamenco rhythms. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/jtKnZ7mJzdKpppc.html Then kzfaq.info/get/bejne/d72HrMqht5zVdHU.html

No key changes. Just lots of minor scale stuff, in one key. Seems like pretty "inside" type of playing. It's more a display of rhthym than of harmonic content. Rhythmically is was varied, and thus interesting.

Enjoy the music expression and communication between 2 guitar masters, and stop focusing on the technique or speed, which is an insult of the music itself

@micaofboca9 жыл бұрын
Word, Juan. Santana's conceptual knowledge and melodic capabilities are only rudimentary whereas McLaughlin is a consummate master of both. Oh, Carlos is cool, alright, ensconced as he is in that Latin/Spanish/salsa rock sound - but do you want Santana in your Coltrane ballad? (like George Clinton said - ". So kick back, dig, while we do it to you in your eardrums. . Like Doobie Brothers, Blue Magic, David Bowie. Oh, It was cool, But can you imagine Doobie in' your funk?"). Santana has no clue when it comes to polychordal Jazz, but he has his obsequious audience that isn't familiar with the Jazz milieu, and canonizes him light years beyond his true capabilities.

agree indeed.
