It's all about the bait! In this video we take you offshore after dark in South Florida in pursuit of the Big Eye Scad, aka the Goggle Eye! Goggle Eye are one of the most prized baitfish in South Florida and all over the world. They can also be very elusive and drive you crazy trying to catch them if you don't know the basics!
Goggle Eye are typically caught after dark and in the early morning hours just before sunrise. They can be found anywhere from 10 feet of water out to several hundred feet of water. Typically they are found out deeper, 150 to 400 feet, in the evening hours and move into shallower depths as the morning hours approach.
Moon phase, tide, and current are all factors that contribute to how the bait feed and when they feed. In the early morning hours, 5am to sunrise, they can often be caught in shallower depths around inlets and other shallow water structure.
Make sure you carry plenty of bait rigs for the occasional cutoff or birds nest that wrecks your rig. Hayabusa makes one of the most popular rigs for goggle eye fishing. The rig is a D119 and hook size is #15. Other manufacturers like Offshore Angler and R&R Tackle make a similar rigs that work well too. Recommended weight sizes vary from 16 to 32 ounces.
