What a great result on those hands. Bluing hands is always seen as a dark art but after watching that I may just give it a go.

yeah, it’s one of those things that’s possible for about anyone to do, just gotta get a few fairly inexpensive tools...the glass pen, polishing cloth/pad, brass filings. Give it a go!

So cool! Might get a few sets of cheap UNITAS 6497/98 hands and practice on them. Thanks for the tutorial.

Interesting, this is the first time I have seen corrosion on blued hands, I thought the blue oxidation layer would prevent corrosion. I've seen 80 year old watch hands that look like they were blued yesterday. Were those copper filings you put them them on?

Old hands on pocket watches can rust over time, depends on how well watches are sealed up, the types of environments they were in, etc. In this example, the watch had no crystal for who knows how long. I've seen a lot of rusted up hands. The filings are brass, helps even out the temperature.

Very interesting. Thank you for showing us! Just curious, once it's blued, can we polish it again for a finer blue look? Or will the polishing after bluing remove the blue?
@WatchComplications

Maybe a little, but I wouldn't, as depending on the type of polishing it will start to remove the color. The idea is that the polishing should all be done before the bluing, as high a polish as possible on the steel, and then the blue is just a layer of sorts on the surface.

I would suggest creating a brass dish specifically for this - cast iron has absolutely horrible conductivity and evenness of heat, despite the wives tale that it is some super great conductor like copper. Thats absolutely not true.

It’s quite a small cast iron pan, which helps, and it’s loaded with brass chips. Cast iron is not a wives tale, there is a reason it’s still a favorite material in cooking (I adore my 12” cast iron pan, grill, etc.) The reason for brass is that it helps even out the heat between the iron and the hands. Are there other combos that will work as well or better, sure, but…as seen in the video it works just fine. The evidence speaks for itself.

with that said, beds of other materials like copper or brass will also work.

Since you're bluing the hands, why not whiten the crystal with hydrogen peroxide and UV?

The hands were from an old beaten up watch I'm not restoring. I would put in a new crystal if I were...much easier.
